Subject: #1 on this day in... ( UK version)
Thought I'd do a 90s seen as there are both topics on the 70s and 80s board:
1990 - Elton John - Sacrifice
1991 - Jason Donovan - Any Dream Will Do (and give it a couple more days and we'd be on Bryan Adams - Everything I Do for 16 weeks straight!)
1992 - Erasure - Abba-Esque EP
1993 - Gabrielle - Dreams
1994 - Wet Wet Wet - Love Is All Around (still no1!!)
1995 - Outhere Brothers - Boom Boom Boom
1996 - Fugees - Killing Me Softly
1997 - Hanson - Mmmbop
1998 - Baddiel, Skinner 7 the Lightning Seeds - 2 3Lions '98
1999 - ATB - 9pm, til I Come

Here goes . . .
1990 'Sacrifice; - Elton John: This is a special song to me, as a haunting quality.
1991 'Any dream will do' - Jason Donovan: From the 'Joseph and his technicolour dreamcoat' production, this is o.k.
1992 'Abba-esque (EP)' - Erasure: I love Erasure but I think they should have stook to their own material.
1993 'Dreams' - Gabrielle: Boring song. She's done better.
1994 'Love is all around' - Wet Wet Wet: Great song from a great band. It just went on far too long (15 weeks at no 1?). Wet Wet Wet actually withdrew the song from circulation towards the end of it's run. Apparently Wet Wet Wet got sick of it but I believe this was a last bid to beat Bryan Adam's record.
1995 'Boom Boom Boom' - Outhere Brothers: Rubbish record really.
1996 'Killing me softly' - Fugees: Boring and uninspiring
1997 'Hmm Bop' - Hanson: Not bad. The group managed to get a couple more minor hits out before their voices broke.
1998 'Baddiel, Skinner and the Lightning Seeds' - 3 Lions '98: The blokes from Fantasy Football team up with the Lightning Seeds to create the football anthem of the 90s. Great, catchy but Frank Skinner's singing sounds a bit odd.
1999 '9pm 'till I come' - ATB: I have the song in my CD collection. It can't be that memorable because I don't remember it.

I bought this one a long long time ago, back in my CD buying period. I heard it again on the radio last night. It's aged terribly...

I just listened to it on the CD player and it was as I suspected. Tee Hee! Totally forgetable.

Don't get me wrong, it was good at the time. In fact, it was one of the few number one singles circulating at the time which I could happily say I owned and was (relatively) happy with. But with all the techno that's going around at the moment, I can hardly say that the back of the pile is the wrong place for it. Sure, I'll listen to it again, but not today.
Techno suffered in 1999 and then scored a rebirth thanks to Sophie Ellis Bextor. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, remains to be seen, because that phase is still not over...

I'll just comment on the ones I can comment sufficiently on...
1993: Gabrielle - Dreams. That early?! I could swear I remember it so vividly. Liked it.
1994: Wet Wet Wet - Love Is All Around. Number one for fifteen long weeks. Did it deserve to be number one? Of course. It sold the most. Did I like it at the time? Sure, why not? Do I like it now? Not as much...
1995: Outhere Brothers - Boom Boom Boom. Don't remember well...
1997: MmmBop - Hanson. The best piece of pop in the whole of 1997. Wouldn't stand the test of time now. My sole memory of it lasts because this was the time I'd finished primary school, and I remember hearing it on stereos everywhere.
1998: B/S/LS - 3 Lions. Like Stop Crying... after it, it just encapsulated the whole English soccer thing of that year. Brilliant song. I still know the words...
1999: ATB: 9pm - already covered above.

Excellent! The 90's generation speaks up!
I'd stopped listening to a lot of 90's stuff as that decade progressed - but I think I may be able to bluff my way thru' this...let's have a go...
1990 - Didn't really go for this at all, as karen says he's done better - #1 due to repeat ad nauseaum plays by Steve Wright...
1991 - Hm..no - competently done, but that's about it...
1992 - Liked this for a while, pretty ho-hum now...not a patch on their 80's stuff...
1993 - Hated it then and now...sorry!
1994 - As 1993...sorry once again!
1995 - The gentle sound of a barrel being scraped...
1996 - Give me Roberta any day of the week...
1997 - OK piece of fluff...
1998 - The 1996 version was just beginning to fade out of my collective memory when along comes this - if you want to flog an idea to death, fine - just make sure I'm out of earshot...!
1999 - Ooh, the "controversial" title, eh? Sadly, did nothing for me...
Obviously out of my depth here, eh?
Thank you Criz, you've made a happy man very old...!
