Subject: MTV Icon

Written By: cyclonus5150 on 05/02/03 at 02:49 p.m.

Alright...I'm a huge fan of Metallica but why is a band that has only ever put out a handful of videos and for the majority of their career completely ingnored MTV being heralded as the next MTV Icon?  Why would this happen before say a Prince or Madonna?  Madonna has been at the forefront of MTV's culture for 20 years now.  Look how many acts have come and gone in the time that she has been on top and your head spins.  Then of course you have Michael Jackson, who has sortof taken a razorblade to his career as of late.  His contribution should at least warrant an MTV Icon status.  I mean come on, Janet Jackson an MTV Icon before her brother?  You have to be kidding me.  I still say that Madonna should have been the innaugural MTV Icon.  What do you all think?

Metallica are about to put out a new album....so their record company probably paid MTV off to do a special about their music. MTV sucks....I never watch it......

Metallica has skills. They deserve it, but I guess MTV isn't really the right forum to present it.

Metallica being on "MTV ICON' probably means losing more fans. They alot fans due to the Napster thing and their fans clamed selling out with their release of "Load" in the mid 90's. Metillaca are legends yes but they have lost alot of fans. Madonna is no doubt "MTV Icon" material. Prince would never do "MTV Icon" because he has gone away from major record labels in the last decade.

It's all about marketing, record execs and big bucks.

MTV, I spit on thee.  :P

Metallica's got skills, but MTV Icon? Please.

I totally agree with you HS.  MTV are nothing but mere blood-sucking leaches.

I think the whole "Icon" deal was cool for someone like Janet Jackson, but not Metallica.  That's just lame!  But then again, Metallica's been pretty lame since "Load" anyway.  What band will be next? TOOL, Pantera......Megadeth? And what qualifications does a band or singer have to have to be named an "Icon"?  hmmmm.....certainly not "fans"...because honestly, I can think of MANY other artists better then Metallica that have a hell of alot more fans then they do  ::)
