Subject: HS Graduation age?

Written By: Chrisrj on 04/20/03 at 06:43 p.m.

How old were you when you graduated high school?  I've met people who say they officially graduated at age 17, and people who officially graduated at 18(me being one of them).

It seems like the majority of cartoons have 8-9 year-olds in the 4th grade(a la Suth Park), but then again, Bart Simpson was designed to be 10, and he's put in the 4th grade too.

Is the law about education and age different in other areas?  I just find it confusing to see like a recently-turned-22-y/o celebrating his class of 98, whereas with my area, it'd be 99...
I dunno, it seems weird to me.

I was 18. Essentially, in my school district (New York City), everyone in your class is in the same cohort (unless you skipped a grade or were left back). So in 1996, everyone who graduated was pretty much born in 1978.

I know in some districts, it is different; they have September 1 cutoff dates or December 1 or whatever.

I was still 17 when I graduated, but I was born in the summer.  Most of us born in 1975 graduated high school in 1993, though I guess if you were born late in the year you would have come out in '94.

It all really has to do with when you started Kindergarten, then of course, if you were retained, etc. For example,I was born in early 77..I would have turned 5 in 3/82...so I was ready for K in 8/82 (every district varies, but usually if you are 5 by Aug or Sep, you can start K)..I never was triple promoted or held back, so I was in 1st grade 83-84, etc..til 94-95..I turned 18 in 3/95 and graduated 6/95. 90% of our class was born anywhere between Sep 76 and Aug 77. Most of us were 18, but those who turned 18 in summer were still 17 at the time of graduation.  Those a few months younger were mostly in the class of 1996, born Sep77-Aug 78.

A child born today, Apr 20, 2003 will be 5 in 4/08..will be in Kindergarten 2008-09 school year..and will be in 12th grade in the 2020-2021 school year and graduate in 2021.

I was 18. But that was because I liked grade 9 so much I took it twice ;)

Where I grew up, you could start K if you were 5 before Nov. 1st so I actually started when I was 4 and turned 5 in Oct. of that year so I got an early start. Woulda been out early too 'cept for grade 9. Oh right, I liked it so I took it twice  ::)

I was 17 when I graduated in 1989 because my birthday is in November.  Which pissed me off because all my friends were 18 in senior year & they were allowed to write their own notes to excuse them from class. >:(

I graduated in 1997. I turned 17 in March and graduated in early June. Meaning I was usually a year or two younger than most of my peers...

I was 18. My mother tried to put me in school early but I wasn't ready. In a way, I'm a bit glad because that would have meant that I would have been the youngest in my class-it was bad enough that I was the youngest in my family. Now, I brag because I am younger than all my sisters.  ;D

Had I stayed in school I would have been 17 when I graduated in 2001 (the new HSC guinea pig year :)).

I was 4yrs old when I started Kindergarten, the cut-off is June/July here so I made it 'cause my B'day is in April...I was definitely one of the younger kids in my year, at sports carnival events where they grouped by age, I always had to compete against the ppl in the year below me... :-/

However, since I dropped out at the beginning of year 10 and am NOW doing my HSC at TAFE, I will be 19 when I finish (and that's only provided I pass).  Damn I feel old....:)

Oops, I meant 4!  See what dropping out does to your maths skills.... ;D

i was 18 when i graduated, but i knew lots of people that were 17. I think the cutoff is Dec 31 for kindergarten(my cousin, who was born dec. 31 started school the same time as me, and i was born in March). There were a lot of people born before December 1983 in my graduating class also so we had a pretty wide range. In my Sociology class there was some guy who was 19, and i knew this one guy who was born July 1983. So im not sure if most were 17 or 18 when they graduated here. You would think it would easily be 18, but i knew so many people who were born september, october, november, december 1984 sooo(so ive just admitted this doesnt even account for people born in mid june-august 1984)i wont even try to guess.

I was wondering because of all these cartoonists putting their characters in earlier grades than they should be.  Jump Start(the comic strip) had a fantasy scene where their son was graduating at age 17.  And South Park had moved their kids into the 4th grade, and revealed that Butters and Wendy were 8, and about to turn 9 later in the year... that just confuses me.  I was 9 the 1st half, but I turned 10 in the 2nd half.
From what I heard, most students graduate at 18, so it almost makes me feel like we're an inferior state graduating a year later.  I dunno..

And, I hate to admit, but I graduated a few months later than I was supposed to.  But I did do some things differently with that amount of time, so it actually became one of the most memorable times in my life.

I was 16 when I graduated high school - turned 17 that November.

I started Grade 9 when I had just turned 13 - skipped half of Grade 8.  That meant I finished high school in just 3 1/2 years instead of 4.  I was always a year younger than many of my classmates.

Here in Ontario, Canada, if you wanted to go to university rather than community college, you needed five years of high school rather than just 5 (back a few years ago when I graduated that is).  My hometown had a separate school just for that fifth year (Grade 13).  That was pretty cool, and prepared you a little more for higher education.  There was much more self-study and if you chose to skip classes, they wouldn't necessarily call your parents.  I took the extra year, and graduated from Grade 13 when I was 17 - turned 18 that November.

At my school, you had to be 5 before Sept. 15 in order to get into Kindergarten.

I have an August birthday, so I was 17 when I graduated in May of 2001.

I was 17 when I graduated high school.

It has to do with what month you're born in. I turned 18 only 2 months after graduating high school.

I was 17, but turned 18 about 10 days later.  Here, you have to be 5 by Sept 1 of the year you start Kindergarten.  But, the date changes from district to district.  When I started, it was Dec 1.  When my brother's started, there was no date.  When my younger brother started, it was Oct 1.

I was 18 upon graduation in '73, but I know there were these older men in my classes, like in their mid 20s at the time, who came from foreign countries, who still possibly have not graduated.

Oh yeah, I remember a girl from Sweeden that was almost 21.  She was an exchange student and apparently they go to school longer over there?
