Subject: British support for industrial action?

Written By: karen (Guest) on 04/07/03 at 03:43 a.m.

I was chatting to a friend in the pub the other day about industrial action (as you do!).  We both remembered doing something at home in the early 90's to show support for something or other but we can't remember what it was.  One Saturday evening everyone in Britain was asked to turn off all their electrical items for an hour, from 7 p.m. if memory serves.

Can anyone else remember doing this and what it was all about?

Karen, now that you mention, I do recall something about this.
The big issue in the early 90s was the poll tax (aka "community charge") - was this action related to the poll tax protests?

Thanks for replying, I was beginning to think I'd imagined it all!

I don't think it was to do with the Poll Tax.  I think that came in slightly earlier than this, maybe '89?

This 'action' I'm talking about was sometime between 1990 (when we bought the house) and 1994 (when my friend moved to this town, he remembers being at his old house for it).
