Subject: Magic: The Gathering
I believe this game was most popular when I was in high school in the mid-90s...I even recall seeing a "grandmaster" tournament of Magic televised on ESPN2, they had a life-meter graphic and everything :)
For those of you who don't recall, Magic: The Gathering is a game distributed by Wizards of the Coast, which is a lot like glorified poker. You can collect lots of different cards with different abilities, and contrary to popular belief you don't have to collect the expensive or rare cards to win a game, so it is based more on strategy than on the size of your pocketbook.
I'd like to use this thread to reminisce, and also discuss Magic strategies and deck composition. Also, if you are interested, Screwball54 and I did talk about doing a sort of webcam game of Magic over the internet. My e-mail is listed so you can either contact me that way, or just post something here :)
Oh, and this is one way to shamelessly promote my new parody:

Enjoy! I'll post my favorite decks later :)

I have a bunch of old cards Boxed up right now. My fondest Magic memory was when I first started playing and open a booster pack and lone behold a revised "Lord of the Pit" (7/7 flying) was the rare. That night I put him into action, and even my friends prized "Personal Incarnation" was no match. My other favorite moments include when I got my first dual land "Taiga", When I acquired my most valuable card (time twister), and when I made first decent deck (Hecatomb+breading Pits, look out).

A friend of mine just emigrated and asked me if I knew anyone to whom she could bequeath her "heavy" collection of cards.
Ah, leaving your past behind...

Hey Mr. G :) Think you can ask her if she has an inventory of all the cards so I can maybe give her an offer? ;)

Oops - for some reason I missed your earlier reply... :-[
She's an 8-hour flight away now, So I'll check with her sister (who doesn't live at home any more so there may be a delay in my next update...)

It's okay :) I just wanted to know what was in her collection...and maybe in the future, make an offer.

Alas, I heard back from her.
The stash is actually her boyfriend's, and he's not willing to part with the more valuable stuff.
I presume that most M:tG players have a rough agreement of what constitutes value in cards, so I think this particular quest has come to a dead end.

Heya Rice Cube I was an avid player, but I stopped playing and collecting after Ice age came out. I have a full set of Antiquities, Arabian Knights, Legends, The Dark, Fallen Empires as well as 3/4 of 1st Edition, Had a few beta but traded them to help get complete sets of the others. and yes I do have a black Lotus as well as 3 of the Moxes, I have loads of revised edition regular cards as well as some 1st edition lands and common stuff. I stopped playing because they just went overboard, too many regulations on decks and it didnt make it fun anymore to play.
I should finish it up once people stop playing and the prices go down.

Some of my friends play Magic. I've tried to learn but can't seem to grasp the concept.
Is there some sort of tutorial I can learn online?

Yessir...I'll try to find a link for you later but you should be able to Google something off the net. Plenty of fan sites out there. It's hard to keep track of all the abilities and powers and cards out there though, the expansion sets keep coming!
