Subject: What was good about Pearl Jam anyway?

Written By: Sean Gib on 01/31/03 at 03:17 p.m.

IMO, Pearl Jam, and just about every other grunge or alternative band just flat out sucks.  Ok I admit Nirvana was pretty good, but all this other cr*p from the 90s and now just suck.

I just never understood why people thought Pearl Jam was such a great band, when it sounded like sh*t.  All this grunge/alternative stuff from the 90s have been just horrible.  The weirdest thing was, I was 19 years old in 1991 when Pearl Jam came out, I hated them then, and I still don't get them now.  You would think a teenager would like what's supposed to be "hip and new", but I have always hated this alternative garbage.

You're not the only one who feels that way. When I was in highschool back in 92, I loved groups like Pearl Jam, Dinosaur Jr., and Soundgarden. But everyone in my school was pretty much into rap and Metallica. The metalheads used to say that grunge music was just slack, and the rappers, well they just didn't like anything with guitars. But I loved it then and I will continue loving it when i'm old and grey.

I was 17 when Pearl Jam's album Ten was released.  A friend of mine told me to watch them when they were on SNL one night, it must have been in the spring of '92.  Their first album was very good, I own most of the other albums too, and really like Yield.

The music on the radio in the early 90s was pretty bad, at least in my opinion, i.e. Milliv Vanilli, Damn Yankees, Ugly Kid Joe, Roxette, C+C Music Factory(remember them?).

Pearl Jam to me was a change much for the better.

Personally I like Pearl Jam because I love Eddie Vedder's voice.

you cannot speak ill of the early 90's, those years blow away the entire 80's decade. Pearl Jam were musical gods, and if you don't know why then you probably were too young to care.

oh well, not your decade I guess.

Breath slowly, in-out, in-out. Counting to 10, 1, breath in, 2 breath out.....
Question should be "What IS good about Pearl Jam anyway".  They are still a very applicable band with a release of new material last November and an upcoming tour.  I was lucky to take my wife to see them at the Seattle show December 8th.  They do charity shows locally before heading worldwide for their tour.
1st what was great about them when they broke into the music scene was a guitar driven band with intelligent lyrics and pomp and prettiness that we had throughout the 80's.  They came at a time when when so many were tired of hot girls, big hair, and leather pants.  They weren't driven to play music by ego or aspirations of wealth and fame and that was refreshing.  There was the start of a some other good bands too that have been mentioned, Nirvana being one and one that hasn't been mentioned is Screaming Trees.  They are still great 'cause they perservered, Nirvana has been dead since Kurt shot himself, hey I loved Nirvana but I didn't care much for Kurt himself.  Did you know that the lead singer for Alice in Chains, Layne Stately lay dead in his condo for 3 weeks before being discovered?  How sad that a great singer for a great band could not be missed for that long, heroin is an ugly thing.  He was not good towards the end, emaciated and missing teeth from his addiction, kick a@@ in their time.
I remember seeing Pearl Jam performing on SNL in '96 or so, they did their song that morphed into a mix with a Who cover, it was amazing, the song ended and their was a pause from the crowd hoping it was going to continue, then this low roaring thunder of applause began and just continued to grow, I've never seen anything like it their before.  You listen to a PJ album and what you hear is PJ whole, they tape live, they are an true jam band led by two great guitarists that complement each other so well, Stone Gossard lays the rhythem layers and Mike McCready flails away.  You have layers to their music, hope and anger, joy and sorrow, can all be potrayed at once.  And Eddie Vedder?  He has got an original, passionate, powerful voice, what you hear on the recording is what you hear live, and as a lyracist, my god that's some powerful stuff, the more beautiful the sound the more heartwrenching the words are.
There is many things I could go on about but I leave you with this last point, I saw them in '98 and tickets were $28, I saw them last Dec and tickets were $36.  The Who, Stones, Paul McCartny were $75 minimum to $250 each ticket.  Trust me when I say that PJ fans are as much of diehards as anyone going to see those shows and they could charge much more if wanted.

Excellent post, Race.  :)

Pearl Jam truly is one of the best things to come out of the 90's.

I just think bashing 90's bands is mostly people who liked the 80's pop culture scence. If you didn't like it you didn't like it. If you did you did. I hate when everybody says how the 90's sucked and everything like that. If each decade was the same we would be bored and whine how nothing has changed. I admit I don't like some 00's music but I don't think everything in the 00's suck. Some things I can take and some thing I can leave(TV, Music.) People who post the 90's suck stuff I wonder about them. Who has time to think about how bad a decade was?

Well said Race. I have been digging PJ for about 11 years now, I first was introduced to them live in 1992 when they played for *free* at Day on the Hill...and I can tell you they were very gracious. What wasn't good about Pearl Jam? ???

Thank you Hairspray and Shazzaah both for you nice words. :)  I could have rambled longer but didn't want people falling asleep during the reading.

Every few years, out of the hundreds and thousands of artists that appear, a truly great band arises. Pearl Jam is one of those bands. If you don't like them, fine. But don't underestimate them because you don't like what they do.

I am not a fan of grunge music, and I think Pearl Jam and especially Nirvana were highly overrated!

I cannot stand to hear the sound of Eddie Vedders voice.  And to watch him on stage is just stomach turning.

Nirvana was a good band - not great and truly talented - but not hard on the ear either.  And for all these people still look up to Kurt Cobain and feel sorry for what he went through, blah blah blah....makes me angry.  In my mind, he had the resources and $ to get help and chose to die instead.  I just can't admire someone like that.

Hope I didn't hurt anyone feelings.
