Subject: Christian Rock

Written By: Indy Gent on 09/29/02 at 11:17 p.m.

There have been a couple of web pages condemning Christian rock as nothing more than heresy and selling out to the public.  I can name several Christian groups such as Three Crosses, White Cross, DC Talk, and of course, Petra and Stryper, that are honest and true to the Word. But what do you think? Can you name some Christian acts that are solid in their beliefs, or that you just enjoy?

Stryper is by far my fave.  I remember when they played Vancouver in the 80s and these old women were outside the Queen Elizabeth Theatre with placards saying that heavy metal wasn't God's music...it was all quite funny to me b/c I think if God wanted people to know about Him then any way to get the msg to the people would be a good way...

My sentiments exactly Jonman!I think it's very sad to be so blinkered in your beliefs.

Mortification. They are a three-piece death metal band from Australia who tour the US about seven months of the year. Many of their songs use passages directly from the Bible. The lead singer is a lay minister of a Christian church. Extremely passionate about his faith and unashamed to use "the devil's music" to spread the word of God. As one of his own songs says (more or less) "all music is God's music".

King's X, maybe?  Jars of Clay?

Personally, I could never stand any blatant "Christian" music that wasn't gospel.  A great deal of Christian bands seem to be trying too hard to be the Christian version of some other better band.

I love Stryper.  They have always been my fave Christian rock band.  Then there is Petra and Bloodgood.  I ran into a lot of the adults at church that would tell me that my music was not christian...it has a beat ya know.  It used to drive me nuts.

As I said in the Christian Rap thread, I like most of the stuff on the WoW CDs.

I always loved Stryper..and to me, they always seemed to be true to their claims.  Their songs for the most part could be taken both ways, as being "christian" and as just being a 'metal song'.  Even their love songs could be heard as JUST a love song, or as a way of expressing their faith.

I also like Michael W. Smith, though I guess he wasn't Christian "rock", per se, just Christian "pop" maybe...DC Talk opened for him when we saw him in concert back in '93, but I didn't know who they were so I didn't pay a great deal of attention to them.  But, again, I do believe Michael W. Smith is very true to his beliefs, he has just been fortunate enough to hit a chord with people who either aren't religious, or who just enjoy his music for whatever it is.  Heck, we played one of his songs at our wedding reception, (and we're not particularly religious folks)..though I know he's singing Christian music, the song just said what I wanted it to say for our wedding party's dance.   :)

Petra really is more soft rock than anything. There are a lot of Christian artists that would classify this area of rock. (4Him, PFR, Russ Taff, Whiteheart, Jennifer Knapp, etc.) Personally, I liked Mortal's old stuff, Guardian, All-Star United, Newsboys, and later DC Talk. But I believe that the message is more important than the type of music they play. :)
