Subject: What year do you think the '90s really began?
I'm not saying the early '90s were the '80s, but I think we all agree that there was still a residue, or an after effect of that 1989 glow around in 1990 and kinda 1991 as well. (Stress the 1989 style was in an afterglow, not 1985, '86, or '87)
So what year do you think the '90s really began and looked like what people think of as typical '90s?
1992?
Or perhaps 1993?
Maybey even 1994? People were still dressing a little late '80ish where I lived well into the mid '90s.
Subject: Re: What year do you think the '90s really began?
The 90s really began in 1991, because that is when the decade starts. A decade is a period of ten years. So, the 90s ended in 2000, and 2001 is when the new millenium began.
To answer your question, to me it began in 1992.

I think he means "culture wise", and not "date wise". I think summer of 1993 is when the old was pretty much out and the 90's had taken over. My question is have they ever really ended?

I don't think a whole lot. They seem pretty similar to today. We're just more advanced with computers and stuff, but that's about it.

Subject: Re: What year do you think the '90s really began?
I think around 1992 is when the 90's fashion and music trends really started. 1992 was the split of the 80's/90's.
Subject: Re: What year do you think the '90s really began?
Late 1991, early 1992 was when I remember it came in. The second half of '91 was when Nirvana and Pearl Jam broke through.
Though whatever was left of the '80s were just barely hanging around in 1990 and the first half of 1991.

Well... I think What I Am By Edie Brickell and the New Bohaimians sounded 90's. Suprisingly it was from the 80's.
1987 had a lot of 90's type bands. U2's With or Without you is considered a song from the 90's. This is so confusing.

"With Or Without Or You" is considered a 90's song? really? The New Bohaimians I thought were like 90 or 91 and then I found out it was 80's I was kinda suprised.

For me - 1993

I think the 90's started as soon as the 80's ended. And for me the 80's ended when the house music and night club music became popular.

I agree, 1993 is when I remember it starting to. Bill Clinton was even sworn into office in January 1993, which completely rounded it all out. Though I thought it was really really close to being the 90's in 1992, but not quite yet there.
I always think of the early 90's as an incomplete or not fully formed 90's, but still 90's. I don't consider any of that, not even 1990, to be the 80's. Early 90's were just like the early 80's, it was the embryonic stages of the respective decades.

Please don't use Billie as the cutoff for the decade. Oh please, no. He did not end the greatest decade ever, the 80's. Remember, Bust was the crossover.
Subject: Re: What year do you think the '90s really began?
1999!!! ha ha ha! Well, that's when a lot of people did stuff...
Subject: Re: What year do you think the '90s really began?
What... kind of stuff would that be?
Subject: Re: What year do you think the '90s really began?
began late 91, full swing by 92, and was pretty much over in 97 when DVD Backstreet Boys Puffy etc...came out and Boyz II Men Mariah Carey Alanis Morrisette went down in popularity. Now were in the period where remnants of the 90's remain while pieces of whats next are showing up gradually.

1990: Neo-Geo, the 24-bit game system, debuted, which brought up more game wars/technology that was prevailent(sp?) in the 90s. Also, hip-hop went pop with MC Hammer, & Vanilla Ice. Plus, it's the first 90-something year of the century....
1991: MC Hammer dropped MC, and released 'Too Legit 2 Quit', which sounded considerably more like 90s than 'U Can't Touch This'. Grunge with Alice in Chains & Nirvana replaced hair metal for good. Then there's the gulf war.
1992: The flannel look started slipping into the R&B videos by here. TLC, debuting at this time, was NOT one of them:P The hairstyle where it was sorta split down the middle arrives. I never knew the name of that style & I WANTED IT SO BAD IN JUNIOR HIGH!! LOL
1993: Gangster rap replaced the pop/hip-hop, and also became a new fashion, though late 80s were apparently still in for a while(tell that to my junior high school @ the time!).
1994: Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain dies. And grunge seemed to die out with him. In the wake popped(no pun intended) up Ace of Base, Green Day & Coolio. Biggest films: Lion King, Speed, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump. Return of Jafar was the 1st direct-to-video sequel of an animated movie.
I don't think 1995 started the 90s for real, but just carried them out. I think any of the above could've started the 90s. So I would have to mostly go for 1993. 1994 was too late, and 1992 was still too 80s at the time.
Besides, since 1990's really alike to the 80s, and 1999's really similar to now, wouldn't it be fun to say that those 10 years were like 3 decades in 1? ;D

The 80's and 90's are not alike at all. 1992 was the split between the 80's and 90's just like 1983 is the split between the 70's and 80's. 90 and 91 were 80's leftovers. 1999 is kinda different from now: (WTC), Teen Pop has slow down alot since then, we are in a recession unlike 99 when the economy was booming. Still some things are the same: Clothes, and reality TV. To say the 90's didn't start until 95 is kinda off base.
Subject: Re: What year do you think the '90s really began?
Sometime around 1992 or 1993 is when it started in full force with the baggy pants, flannel and grunge.
Though 1990 and '91 were not really what I would consider to be the 80's, not even the late 80's. Neon and New Kids were still popular, but it wasn't cool to use any type of 80's lingo in 1990. More to the point, it wasn't cool to act like you were still in the 80's back in 1990. It was the same way in 1980 regarding the 70's.

The 90's is still relevant and nobody looks at it like it is old already. I'm suprised in 1980 the 70's weren't considered "still cool" kinda of(must been the excess of disco back in the late 70's that people wanted to forget about that decade because I can't think of anything else.) The 80's were the decade of "excess" some musicians on VH1 called it so the 80's to burn out by somewhere around that 1988-1990 period was not a suprise. I'm 23 now so trying to remember 1990 real well can be a little fuzzy.

I said the year 1990 was most alike to the 80s, not the 1990s themselves, and 1999 was at least alike to most of 2000.
Sorry if I wasn't so clear that time. I definitely agree that they both weren't alike, having gone to school then.
Subject: Re: What year do you think the '90s really began?
I think '92/'93, I was in High School and wishing the 80's back. You could really see more of a change in '93, especially with music and clothes.
