True, I forgot many.  I thought the early '90s were the best part of the decade we call the Nineties.  Everything about what the '90s became was built from the early '90s.  Early '90s was the foundation of the decade.

And there was still a nice mix of '80s tunes around too back then too..  Which was always great.  I loved how the early '90s had that mixture of late late '80s along with baggy pants and grunge.  That was cool and made for an interesting scene.  8)

C & C Music Factory were great too.  They were early '90s.  As was WILSON PHILIPS!  Sorry, I had a big crush on those gals back in the day.  Whitney Houston also had her big hit from the Bodygaurd soundtrack.

I forgot all about Bel Biv Devoe, the remants of New Edition from the '80s.  Was Paula Abdul still hanging around in the early '90s?  I'm not sure.

Yah Paula was still around in the early nineties, actually she is still around now.  I would perfer to forget Whitney Huston and the bodyguard soundtrack, That song made my ears bleed, and you can't escape it, even now.  If I could choose one song to never have to hear again, it would be that song.

The only thing fit about the early 90s was Rush Limbaugh. He was great back then and 1994's GOP takeover of the Senate and House was his crowning achievement. He was a groundbreaker in conservative talk radio and woke us up.  But our culture was too sick to accomplish much more and we had to have September 11, 2001 kill off the last of the Nineties.

Otherwise:  I did go on my first date (am shy withdrawn person) and managed to settle on a career in IT.  And my first computer was a Packard Bell Axcel 106 with Windows 3.1; I remember Compuserve in Terminal mode very well.

There are tonnes of fantastic songs from the early 90's. The majority of music I listen to is from the late 70's to the early 90's. Some great songs from that part of the deacade would be:

B52's - Love Shack ( well it was early 90's for us Brits :) )
Madonna - Vogue
Snap - The Power
REM - Loosing My Religion/Man On The Moon/Nightswimming/Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight
Beats International - Dub Be Good To Me
Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satalitte
Blur - Girls and Boys/Parklife/Country House
Oasis - Wonderwall/Don't Look Back In Anger/Some Might Say/Whatever
Lisa Leob - Stay
Utah Saints - Something Good
Cranberries - Linger/Zombie/Dreams
The Cure - Friday I'm In Love
Billie Ray Martin - Your Loving Arms
St Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart
The Connells - 75-75
Paul Wellar - You Do Something To Me
The Bluetones - Slight Return/Marblehead Johnson (technically 96 - but hey - fantastic stuff nonetheless )
Suede - Animal Nitrate
Mr Big - To Be With You
New Order - Regret
La's - There She Goes
Duran Duran - Ordinary World

I did like the early 90's because like somebody said it had a mix of 80's still in it with some 90's starting to come in. It was a pretty interesting time. From 1990-1994 there was lots of good stuff on the radio: house/dance music, grunge, rap, a lttle Boyz II men and Mariah Carey. Anything past 1998 just doesn't click with me. 1999-2000 were the years of the internet boom, stock market taking off and teen-pop music. Now in 2001-2002 the governement is investigating different immigration services because of 9-11 and different companies accounting records(courtesy of the Enron and world com debacle.) It was easier living in the 80's and 90's I think now there's just so much to worry about like wars and stuff like that.

Definatley the music, Pearl Jam is still my favorite band.  One other name that didn't get mentioned yet was Seal, his 1st album was incredible, I had a great cd system in my car and I sold a few copies of his music while cranking his tunes.  Also, the developent of the former soviet union was pretty exciting too.

The VERY early 90s were an extention of the 80s..1992 started the true 90s..which ended around 97..the late 90s unfortunately started and ended abruptly though on 9/11/01 (though it was already a dying era). The 2000s so far can be seen as ???? Not good  though, lets put it that way.

To clarify...it was unfortunate that the late 90s started..because musically, television, etc it was horrid..but the fun, prosperous, easy-go-luckiness that exemplified the 90s as a whole died on 9/11/01.

I was in elementry school during the early/mid '90's.

I watched mainly Fox programming (Simpsons, Married...With Children, In Living Color, Parker Louis Can't Lose, & Herman's Head), cartoons (Two Stupid Dogs, Tiny Toons) , "The Brady Bunch" (reruns), "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air", and "Perfect Strangers".
I didn't get cable until 1994.  :-/
But enjoyed watching cable tv at my relatives' house.  :D
(Mainly Nickelodeon, Disney, and forced to watch MTV)
Fortunate that I watched MTV before it became Moronic TV.

I even tried to stay up late to watch "Arsenio Hall".
(Probably seen it 3 or 4 times and made it to the theme/opening monologue)
Never actually watched it. (Should be on DVD)

Fave. movies: "Tremors", "Coneheads", "Wayne's World"/"Wayne's World II", and "Don't Tell Mom the Baby Sitter's Dead". (Some I still like)

Music: I mostly listened to the oldies station.
And listened to Top 40 radio, via a school bus.
(I wasn't into alternative & rap until  1998.)
Strange fact: I originally thought "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell (from the "Coneheads" movie) was a new song from 1993,but discovered that it was from 1981 two years later.
1994 was the year I got cable & watched "VH1's The Big 80's that got me interested with popular music from the 1980's...then "8 Track Flash Back" introduced me with the '70's.
I wasn't into much of the then current music scene until 1998.
When popular music started to become awful with TRL, a creep named Marilyn, some horrid rapper named Puffy, etc.

To be honest, I didn't care much about MC Hammer & Vanilla Ice and strongly dissed New Kids On The Block & Paula Abdul only  because my older sister was a fan of their music.
BTW, she was never into the '80's pop acts I like today.  :D
(execpt for the "Forever Your Girl" album from Paula Abdul)

In retro spect:  :D

The early '90's was a great time for growing up. (as a kid)
Just before the demise of Saturday morning cartoons & cheesy, but worth watching family oriented sitcoms.

(Pop Cuture Wise)
Not to mention great music ranging from MC Hammer, Bel Biv DeVoe, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. Including many from the '80's that were still around like The Cure, Beastie Boys,B 52's,Guns N' Roses, L L Cool J, REM, Michael Jackson ("Dangerous" was a good album), etc.
Unlike the worthless scum that came out since 1997.
(There were a very few good bands/acts in 1998.)

I'm probably the only one who liked the late 90s almost as much as the early 90s.. oh well.

I pretty much like almost everything mentioned already musicwise(except noone said Jane Child's "Don't Wanna Fall In Love", remember that one?), so I decided to take it a bit further:  videogames.  I know some of you may not have grown up with them, but I have, so there :P

Technically the 90s started for games with the
24-bit NeoGeo.
Of course, I never got to play it, since I was more into the NES(and my dad's friend's Genesis, which was only rare).  What also came out were the game enhancer, Game Genie, as well as Super Mario Bros. 3.
Then came out Sonic in 91, and the Super Nintendo; many fun times with the SNES.  Super Mario World, Final Fantasy(III being best), Street Fighter 2... But I never cared too much for Mortal Kombat.
I also liked the lock-on game for Genesis, Sonic & Knuckles, where you could connect it to Sonic 2 & 3 and play new versions with their then-new character, Knuckles.
Of course, Sony had to release the playstation in 95, which changed games a bit too much for me.  It was alright, but I always prefered the older systems over the newer ones.

Anyone agree/disagree/don't know what I'm talking about?

Don't forget Seinfeld, the greatest TV of all time premiered in the early 90's, Friends followed in 94.

Nickelodeon was at its peak

TV ruled in the 90's, now there's nothing on. Why bother watching?

"Seinfeld" was a great show. I actually watched it during the final season, but the series finale' was awful.
I now watch the reruns on TBS.

And "Friends" is just awful.  :P
Nickelodeon became unwatchable when they canned "Ren & Stimpy". I heard that it'll come back on "The New TNN" or "Spike".  :D

Seinfeld was probably THE best regular show on network TV in the 90s..the last episode though did leave my mouth dropping in sadness..oh well. I did forget to mention, as someone else did, that the 90s did signal the end of the era of Saturday morning cartoons..I was a teen and 20something in the 90s, but the 24-hr cable cartoon networks (which sometimes show 70s 80s 90s cartons) effectively made Saturday mornings, and that whole sat morning kid culture useless, since they can get the same treatment at 5pm on Tuesday now.

I think 1993 was a bad year. I may have my dates wrong but when Dr. Dre came out and alot of the kids became gangsters where I lived was pretty funny. What's even funnier is to run into those people at bars and they're still running that game. You would think it was just a phase. I like some of that music too but I don't have to act the part.

i remember when they were still making games for the NES over here in the States, that was up til like 1992. i remember cause they made some new ninja turtles game for the NES that year. LOL and remember how Capcom milked Street Fighter 2 for all it was worth, it was basically its own series. I think theres like 6 version of that game lol. And videogames were cool til Sony put out the PSX. The darned PSX really started to drive a nail in the Arcade's coffin. It wasnt that bad until FF7 came out. Ever since ff7 its become more and more about the graphics(and the graphic violence).

That last post exemplifies the 90's. Video games. IMO that was the end of fun. The streets became empty save for the wannabe gangsta's. The rest of the kids locked themselves up playing video games.

Music in the 80's was all about partying having a good time, good clean fun. But the youth could not stand it. As always they had to rebel. And along came grunge in all its filthy, dirty glory. Along with it came gangsta rap.

So what you had now was a bunch of dirty unshowered rockers trying to take the good times and fashion out of rock. And rappers talkin about partying and girls and dancing, became an angry promotion for gang violence.

This is what happens every time music changes, it goes the opposite direction. The 80's represented a positive time, a time to get high, party and generally be in a good mood.
So the 90's did the opposite, lets be negative and moody and dont F..k with us or we will kill you.

This kind of attitude cannot last, its just to negative... Thats why the 90's "culture" lasted such a short time. While decades like the 80's actually started in the late 70's and spilled over into the early 90's.
I'd say the real 90's was more like 1992 - 1999... And 2000 to the present, culture has yet to find an identity. It is looking more and more like the first decade of this new milenium will be, the decade of terror or terrorism, and pop culture will take the back seat.

Well...1990 and most of 1991 were pretty lousy (although a lot of that had to do with some family issues). But the economy was in a recession, the murder rates were peaking, and there was a sense of angst pervading the country. Pop culture in my opinion was at a relative low point...nothing too memorable came out, except perhaps 90210 and The Simpsons. It was a gap between the hair bands of the 80s and the alternative explosion of the 90s.

I don't really like video games. My parents bought me a few video game systems. Never did much for me. Liked 90's music and I like 80's music. As for rock in the 90's it was time for the hair bands to go. They had their time. I'll agree with the time period for the 80's which I would estimate came in about 1977 with punk and disco and in 1991 ended. I remember when the Rodney King stuff and the L.A. Riots early in 1992 happened thats when stuff really started to change.

As for the 90's as I have said before the real 90's was 1992-1998 for me. Some do state the 92-96 period was the real 90's though. It started with "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with Nirvana and ended with Jay-Z's "Can I Get A...". The real 90's were dead when Britney Spears came out with "Baby One More Time" in real late 98 which closed the door on the real 90's period. As for rap starting violence there wasn't violence before rap? In 1990 New York City was terrbile and rap music wasn't even that big. In the late 90's crimes were down in NYC. There wasn't violence in the 80's in NYC and Los Angeles? I don't think so.

As far as the new decade is concerned I don't think its going to define itself well.

I respect that,
but IMO, what does one do when they pop in a tape inside a vcr to watch a movie?  They're just sitting there, just like gamers do.  Sure it's a fun time to watch a movie, but that is how gamers feel about games themselves.

I was simply stating how my 90s were, and they were mostly great, and games in my opinion were no exception.  I didn't care for the kinds of games that are mostly oriented to gore though, like DOOM or Mortal Kombat.
