Subject: 90's songs you never hear anymore

Written By: Criz on 06/04/02 at 12:48 a.m.

Not much credit is given to the 90's, especially the late section of the decade. There were some GREAT songs about. I'm sure there was a past thread which is similar but focuses just on the early 90's. Here are my starters:

White Town - Your Woman
Cornershop- Brimful of Asha
Adina Howard - Freak Like Me
Toni Braxton - Your Making Me High
En Vougue - Whatever
Blackstreet - No Diggety
Snap - The Power
B-52's - Love Shack ( 90's for England, I know was 80's for States)
Dee-Lite - Groove Is In the Heart
Blur - Country House
Oasis - Roll With It
Ace Of Base - Anything besides 'The Sign' or 'All That She Want's, for example, Living In Danger, Lucky Love, Happy Nation etc...
New Order - Regret
Nenah Cherry and Yousssou N'Dour - 7 Seconds
Brand New Heavies - Midnight At The Oasis
Wonderstuff - Size Of A Cow
Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence
Cranberries - Linger
Utah Saints - Something Goog
Sybil - When I'm Good and Ready
Adventures of Stevie V - Dirty Cash
Beat International - Dub Be Good To Me
Kylie Minogue - Better The Devil You Know
Mr Big - To Be With You
REM - Whats The Frequency, Kenneth? and Day Sleeper

Definitly many more :)

Am positive it charted very early 1990.

Edited to add: 17th February 1990 in fact :)

I believe you're right about when it charted. I was nitpicking about when it was actually released. Any excuse for a Rowley Birkin impression.  ::)

It was a true story though  ;D

Edited to add: December '89

Edited again because I could't keep up the pretence that I didn't care about the typos.

Single was released here in the U.S. in July of '90 (after "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence"). Bought the cassette maxi-single myself. Probably their best song, IMO, but I love the entire Violator album all the way through (which came out here in March of '90)...

I've seen you praise these guys before, TB, and I have to agree. I was so p*ssed when Gee Street/PolyGram didn't release "Connected" on cassette maxi-single, 'cause I would've bought it! :-( And for that reason, I stopped short of buying the entire Connected album. But believe it or not, just last week I was pleasantly surprised to hear "Connected" playing over the in-store system at the local K-mart - and it was not a "Muzak" version! So run over to the nearest K-mart in SoCal to check out their current "blue light specials" and you might get lucky, lol! :-)

80smusicfreak, when was "Enjoy the Silence" released as a single in the U.S.?  I remember getting the 12" maxi-single around the spring of '90.  Criz & chris's previous posts in this thread led me to believe that ETS may have been released earlier in the U.K. (I do recall that "Personal Jesus" was released in the U.S. around November '89...)

I hear "Connected" all the time here on the east coast.  For once I wish radio would play "Step it Up" or "Elevate My Mind."

90's song you wish you'd never hear again on the radio but alas, someone plays it:

Another Bad Creation - Iesha

Last night on the drive home from work - it was later than usual so I tuned in to the news until a commercial break - then flipping through stations, I came across the only drive home mixshow, which is on the "urban contemporary" station and the DJ throws in this track.  Reminds me that the group was rightfully named...

I also hear 'Connected' a lot - it's quite overplayed on local radio stations. Come to think of it, most tracks are overplayed - that's why I hardly listen to the radio anymore.

Suede - Beautiful Ones
Erasure - I Love Saturday
Jinny - Keep Warm
Bluetones - Marblehead Johnson and Home Fires Burn (BTW Tarzan Boy - have you heard of the Bluetones, and if so, do you like them? You seem to like quite a bit of indie, and they have done some fantastic stuff in my opinion :))

Remarkably, there were four commercial singles released off the Violator album here in the U.S., and your memory appears to be spot-on. :-) Chronologically, they were as follows:

01) "Personal Jesus"  (November of '89) (hit #28 in March of '90)
02) "Enjoy the Silence"  (March of '90) (hit #8 in July of '90)
03) "Policy of Truth"  (July of '90) (hit #15 in October of '90)
04) "World in My Eyes"  (November of '90) (hit #52 in December of '90)

As for the U.K., it was the same four songs, and in the same order, but yes, w/ slightly earlier release dates:

01) "Personal Jesus"  (August of '89) (later hit #13)
02) "Enjoy the Silence"  (January of '90) (later hit #6)
03) "Policy of Truth"  (May of '90) (later hit #16)
04) "World in My Eyes"  (September of '90) (later hit #17)

However, the Violator album also came out in the U.K. in March of '90 (same as U.S.)...

Thank you for clarifying that.  I also like the whole Violator album; it was probably their last album I truly enjoyed.  I have all 4 U.S. Maxi Singles listed above, as well as the U.K. gatefold-sleeve 12" single of "Policy of Truth", Ultimix Remix of "World In My Eyes" and the Art of Mix Remixes of "Enjoy The Silence" (Quart of Quad - POS IMO), "Personal Jesus" (Pump & Stomp) and "World In My Eyes" (Mode to Cure - never knew Robert Smith & Co. covered this).

I only wish TSMCs were overplayed here. I got their latest album and I kind of like it through and through. THIS is what hip-hop and rap should have evolved into, IMO. I'd probably be into a whole different type of music if this is the way it were. No insults, no in-your-face annoyance (like Eminem), no screaming, no crappy beats (rap "music" IS an oxymoron!). Sigh. Just plain, urban, dancey music - kind of like some of the graffitti that catches your eye every now and then (rebellious, yet attractive). I couldn't praise these guys' style enough (and 80smusicfreak remembers this from the old board...haha :D  BTW, another Chris Isaak fan!? Awright!).

Can't say that I've heard of The Bluetones, but that shouldn't surprise anyone since radio doesn't play anything (I've been radio-free for almost 8 months! It was very easy to give up once I got a CD changer in the car :) ). The indie stuff I listen to is what other fans of Suede, Morrissey, and DeMode recommend - and even then I tend to go for the Electronic and EBM first before the guitar-driven music. Music from Metropolis Records, maybe Cleopatra and Beggars' Banquet, and, once in a blue moon, Projeckt 86. It's more hard-driven synthesizers than anything else approaching the style of Techno, but not as repetitive. Well, that, as well as 80s stuff I overlooked. I will give The Bluetones a spin. Hopefully, the CD listening store carries this.

I'm with everyone on this. Violator is the last album that I could listen from beginning to end. I only liked half the tracks from Songs Of Faith And Devotion, then there was the live album of the same name and with the same track listing, then the "Only When I Lose Myself" single came out (this was a good one) and was featured in their 86-98 singles comp., Ultra followed suit of which only ONE song stood out ("It's No Good"), and then back to liking half the songs from their Exciter album (I don't even bother getting the singles anymore since their B-sides pale in comparison to their 80s material - I'll be struck by lightning for saying this, but I can't help thinking thus :-/ Martin L. Gore is still a genius). Strangely enough, the members of DeMode would rate Ultra as their best work from an interview featured in their 86-98 singles collection DVD. They said something to the extent of feeling more comfortable working on it (seeing as to how David Gahan nearly derailed the future of the band due to his drug addiction :-/ He's better now and clean - I hope).

Speaking of K-Mart music, I heard Collective Soul's "December" and a track by Better Than Ezra (I forget which one it is - seriously, WHAT the he11 was the name of that song!?) while shopping at 3 a.m. at the local Super K. I should hang out there more often.

The Bluetones have recently released their 'singles' collection - if you can, get a hold of that. Might be hard seen as they're not a very international band. If you can download tracks, then my top three recommendations would definitly be 'Slight Return' ( Their biggest hit, top 2 in UK charts in '96), 'Marblehead Johnson' and 'Home Fires Burn'. :)

:P ;D Still, I have to give props to that station for at least airing one of DeMode's all-time best songs (IMHO). I love that intro! It's so...it's so ominous and dramatic; like the moment when one's vision becomes blurred and you get that chocking sensation in the throat...right at the moment when "truth" finally strikes home. Sigh.

I guess I'm not the only one to confuse this for an '89er. I could have sworn I saw the video on MTV in late 1989, but it was probably late 1990. Hmph, figures - a senior moment again...

Trust me, they're played all of the time here. At the risk of sounding like I'm encouraging them to make music, the only tracks I ever hear played are the popular "Wannabe", "Say You'll Be There". If only they had some VARIETY, dagnabbit. There are some much better songs, if any, than those...

A few more to add:

"Cut Your Hair" by Pavement

"Grey Cell Green" by Ned's Atomic Dust Bin

"Good" by Better Than Ezra

"Helpless" by Sugar

"Sugarcane" by Sonic Youth

"Sublime" by The Ocean Blue

"Somebody To Shove" by Soul Asylum

"God" by Tori Amos (admittedly, the ONLY song by her I can actually listen to without cringing!)

"Supernova" by Liz Phair

"World Class Fad" by Paul Westerberg

...I just dug these up and recalled how much they were played back in the early 90s. They sound still sound great!

Well, it *does* look like a bit like a who's who of indie cred :)

The late-night music video show in Oz ("Rage") sometimes stiil plays some of these songs, but usually only by request of the guest VJ, or to "fit in" with that VJ's other choices.

e.g.

lots of wall-of-noise rock == Sonic Youth
fey screeching == Pavement (I *like* "Cut Your Hair"!  :P )
Swirly Brit guitars == Ned's Atomic Dustbin
Rock Chick == Liz Phair

and so on...

Ha! Yeah gazpacho you've summed it up pretty well, although I will say that Rage is the best music video program of all time, from anywehere in the world. But you know what to expect from guest programmers. I must admit that Ben Folds sent me a curly one once when he played 'Staring Through the Eyes of the Dead' by Cannibal Corpse!

Yes it is, actually. It basically runs from 1am to about 9 on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The last three hours is the current Top 40; the first five (sometimes six or seven, depending when it starts) runs the gamut of the alternative and independent music scenes.

This is the most recent guest-programmed playlist (from last Saturday night):

http://www.abc.net.au/rage/playlist/archive/2002/20020622.htm

Bluebottle Kiss was the guest programmer band, so all songs before the 3:30 am block were chosen by them, then a block of their songs, plus filler (chosen by the station programmers - usually tires to fit the style of the guset programmer) until the top 50.

Hehe - I see Sugar Kane by Sonic Youth was in the 2:30 block ;D

Never has a song or 'artist' (I use that term loosely) fallen off the face so fast. I heard that song maybe once. Seriously. Like, Jimmy Ray came and went faster than the speed of light. Love Spreads by The Stone Roses
Secret Garden by Bruce Springsteen

Love Spreads is a great song, I remember hearing that on the radio all the time back in '94.  The Stone Roses were really underated in the U.S.  I also liked Fools Gold and Wanna Be Adored.

Well songs that are in the ~3-7 year old age range tend to be played very little..too old to be current, to new to be "old"..we'll hear a lot of early/mid 90s stuff in the next couple years..some stations have "retro" nights..all 80s AND early/mid 90s..NO late 90s

"You Get What You Give" was done by the New Radicals in late 98/early 99.

Selena did "If I Could Fall In Love" and "Dreaming of You".

"Runaway" was by the dance group Corona.

"Sukiyaki" was orginally done in the 80's but Pop/R&B group All 4 one covered it in the mid 90's.

Criz covered the rest for you.

There are a number of different artists singing different songs by the name of 'Runaway'. Helpinghand was correct by naming the Corrs as one such artist, but the song featured on their 1998 album, and I believe it was released in '99.
