Subject: The Black Crowes
Written By: My_Sharona on 05/17/02 at 06:23 a.m.
I have talked about the Black Crowes here on the messageboard, but I have never just come out and asked the opinion of my fellow posters on the Black Crowes.
So here goes, what do you all think of the Black Crowes.
Eg. Overrated, underrate, never heard of them, best album, worst album, Chris' hot factor ( ;)) etc.??
Have fun

Overrated, IMO.

Cool, entirely up to you, can you elaborate on why you think they are overrated? I'm not trying to be rude, although i'm sounding that way, I am actually genuinely interested.
In Australia I think they are the most underrated band around today, but the fan base is different. They are an American band, and I heard them purely by chance. Maybe I'm giving them more credit than they deserve (though I sincerely doubt it) but they changed the way I viewed music and changed the way I viewed myself, just like Girl, Interrupted ignited my passion for movies.

Shake Your Moneymaker is still one of my all-time fave albums but sadly I think they've gone downhill since then...I find Chris's voice irritating...like Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip..I can only listen to a few songs and then I have to turn it off...with the exception of Shake Your Moneymaker...LOVE that album.
Actually, now that I think about it I think it's b/c the other albums are too "busy" and over produced...SYMM is so raw and clean...

When "Shake You Money Maker" came out I was thrilled. I said, "Whoa man, these dudes are awesome." I bought the CD and played it to death. Then the second one came out and I enjoyed the song "Remedy" but after that they just seem to lose it. I don't know, maybe Chris got too much reefer and screwed up his voice and ability to put out a good song. But I haven't listened to them in a long time. Now the only crows I am into is Counting Crows. They are awesome.
Peace,
A'isha

I liked a lot of their songs, but I saw them on HBO and their micrphone stand was decoraded with a rainbow (Kind of a bold statement for live TV). After that I didn't like them as much. As for Crows, I like Counting a lot better.

I too loved Shake your money maker when it came out.I saw them twice live the first time Chris refused to come on at first as the previous band had overrun slightly and the second time he threw a hissy fit and stormed off stage because the audience wouldn't leave their seats(we were standing up in our alotted rows). The sad thing being anyone who tried was thrown out of the gig, it was a management thing and not apathy on the part of the audience who then lost out again because the band only played half an hour and the tickets weren't cheap.I have to confess after that I lost interest in the band.To be fair to Chris though it was a long time ago and even he's admited since he was a bit of a prat in those days.

I agree with that statement, Jonman, and Black Crowes fans will be understandably upset. But they are like several 90s rockers who've decided to rest on their laurals rather than even trying to duplicate their past successes. The Ministry, Soul Asylum, Counting Crows, Better Than Ezra, etc. the list is too large to go on.

I don't think The Black Crowes tried to rest on their laurels. Every single album of theirs has a different sound, they don't fall into the every song sounds the same deal that plenty of other bands have. Shake Your Money Maker is a great album, but not one of my personal favourites, such as Southern Harmony or Three Snakes.
Finally, I dont understand why the Black Crowes would want to duplicate past successes by remaining one way through their whole career, by never expanding their sound or songwriting.
The Black Crowes have and always will play real rock, not fluff rock, not hard rock just real rock n roll. I admire the fact that they have stayed true to their roots and that they haven't sold out in the face of tremendous success.
