My Achey Breakey Heart, by Billie Ray Cyrus.  I absolutely loved that song at first and thought BRC was a god.  A few weeks later I was totally disinterested.  I heard he was kind of a doof or an airhead or something flattering like that and I just kind of lost interest.  Major flash in the pan.  Wonder why?  Was good.

...does anyone hear Ace of Base on the radio anymore? Not that I could care less.   ;D

Actually I still hear 'Candy' a lot, and 'Grovoe is in The Heart' for some reason.

It's probably still played on some country music stations…  :)

Billy Ray Cyrus plays the title role on the Pax TV series "Doc."  His last album for Mercury (although it had the top 10 country hit "Busy Man" on it) didn't sell well so they dropped him.  He has since signed with Monument and has a new album.

Black Box - "Everybody Everybody" and "Strike It Up"
Crystal Waters - "Gypsy Woman" (I heard this all the time when it came out around May of '91)
Maxi Priest - "Close To You"

They play most of the songs that Hairspray originally mentioned here in Raleigh NC, with the exception of "Don't Make Me Over" (Sybil, right?) and "Candy" (Iggy Pop & Kate Pierson, which is a beautiful song).

Every once in a while I hear "The Sign" by Ace of Base. And they play "Groove is in the Heart" here a lot also.

I just remembered one that I don't remember EVER being played on the radio, but I heard and danced to in clubs in the mid-late 80's - "Yo No Se" by Pajama Party.

Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!! :o

In refernce to my last post - IT'S NOT 90's.  :-/

Man, It's very easy to blur the decade line when you hop around different decade boards.

What about the comeback "Tarzan Boy" made in clubs in the 90's? It was the same exact version too! Also the revamping of "Oh, What A Night". Was that done by Franky Valli as well?

(What if God was) One of Us - Joan Osbourne
How Bizzare - OMC
Good Vibrations - Marky Mark (grrrrr! YUM!)
MmmmBop - Hanson
Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House

I remember "Yo No Se" From 1988-89.  I still have that 12" single.  They played it a lot in Phoenix & Chicago at the time (Oh yeah, and in ref. to your freestyle post on the 80's board, "Yo No Se" would fit in that category as well).  ;D

I remember the return of "Tarzan Boy" and "Oh What A Night" in the clubs.  I think the "Tarzan Boy" resurgence followed the Listerine commercials...

Goreripper,
I'm in Kentucky.  We have a new 80's radio station here in Louisville now, that's pretty much all I listen to anymore.
When the radio is on other stations I never hear Pearl Jam, except for their cover of that old song that goes, Where Oh Where Can My Baby Be?   The Lord Took Her Away From Me...
What's the name of that song anyway?  I'll have to ask my dad!

The song's title is "Last Kiss."  It was written by Wayne Cochran and was a big hit in 1964 for J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers.  Ten years later a group called Wednesday recorded it but the station I listened to back then yanked out the version by J. Frank Wilson and played it.  (I think the J. Frank Wilson version may have been rereleased in 1974, but I'm not sure.)

I used to listen to Pirate Radio here in SoCal and they used to play some really obscure stuff, so many of you might have not even heard of the band - let alone the song. KROQ used to play good music on Saturday and Sunday nights, but that stopped years ago. Y-107 sank and, with it, any last hopes of ever having good radio programming nowadays. Anyway, here is a list of songs that used to be played a lot in these stations and then were never heard again:

Metal Mickey by Suede.
Helpless by Sugar.
Laid, Say Something, and Born Of Frustration by James.
Monday Morning 5:19, Untouchable, and Quarantine by Rialto.
We Are The Normal by The Goo Goo Dolls.
If You Were Here by Kent.
Life In Mono by Mono.
Now That I Have You by InSoc.
Regret by New Order.
Break It Down Again by Tears For Fears.
Number One Crush and anything off Garbage's 1st decent album.
N.W.O. and Just One Fix by Ministry.
Stick It Out by Rush.
Suicidal Blonde, The Stairs, and Beautiful Girl by INXS.
Policy Of Truth by Depeche Mode (you'd be surprised at the reluctance one gets from a  radio station to try to play this song).
Moldavia by Front 242.
I Should Have Known by Aimee Mann.
I've Been Waiting, Girlfriend, and Time Capsule by Matthew Sweet.
Crank and Black Metallic by The Catherine Wheel.
Heaven Beside You by Alice In Chains.
Sugar Cane by Sonic Youth.
The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get by Morrissey.

...and this is just the stuff that I remembered off the top of my head. There are sooooo many more. It's a shame that radio is dead.

When I was on holiday in the USA earlier this year, I picked up a DVD of Weird Al Yankovic live in concert, in which he did a snippet of "Achy Breaky Song"...

Songs I miss from the radio in the 90s:

Blur - Boys and Girls
Kylie - Confide in Me
Luscious Jackson - City Song
Your Ghost - Michael Stipe and er... I cant remember her name.

...and what the hell happened to L7!? "Pretend We're Dead" etc!?
I used to ROCK to trax like "Shitlist" et al! I think they used that on the Pet Semetary 2 soundtrack when the dead guy is skinning the rabbits...great little ditty that one! ;D

Hey, that's funny!!! We have an 80's station here too that states that they're for the 80's AND MORE..., so they'll throw some decent early 90's stuff in there in the mix.

You're so lucky!  The only 80's station I can find around here comes out of Seattle, so the reception sucks.  I listen to it in the car anyway, but depending on where we're driving, I end up getting music, static, static with music...

Maybe one of these days you can build a compilation so great (or many little ones) that you won't have to rely on the radio stations anymore. That's what I'm trying to do myself because the station does tend to play the same exact songs everyday just in different order. It's like they lost the tracks to 1/2 of the decades or something.

Any early songs by Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. I never hear them on the radio that much.  There is also this one song that was sung by Big Daddy Kane and Spinderella (from Salt 'n Pepa) that I never hear anymore.  It was called "Very Special".  Another song is "Six Feet Deep" and I think it was by the Ghetto Boys.  These songs came out in '93-'94.  I miss hearing them on the radio. :'(

Since i own most of this music personally i get to hear it when i want and unfortunately where i live no one has been bright enough to start an 80's early 90's station but i always wanted to open a bar and play only that music

songs i havent heard in awhile include

I've Been Thinking About You - Londonbeat
Sending All My Love - Linear
Mary Had A Little Boy - Snap
P.A.S.S.I.O.N - Rhythm Syndicate
Crazy - Seal

and a couple local songs from 1990 that i doubt i will ever hear again Trust Me - John James, Conspiracy - Paris Black,  and a rap tune from 1991 i think called No Sexx With My Sister

one last thing does anyone else remember a song from around 1987 i think called Dear Mr Jesus, sung by a little girl, and big choir of people for the chorus,  i think they were called Powersource, but i remember it used to make people cry and was very popular for awhile but it may have been only a local phenom

I agree that Duran Duran's "Electric Barbarella" is awesome and is NEVER played. They hardly ever played it when it first came out. Then again, perhaps it seemed that way because, like many 90's songs, it came and went. RADIO DOES SUCK!!!

Actually, I miss hearing Beck and Radiohead, but I miss the rare bands of the 90s like Kent and Rialto. The latter two were so awesome and were played only for about a year and then the station went under and with it, the hopes of ever hearing anything good and original that isn't Top 40 or MRS (Metal Rap Screams). Air is another band that was played and, then, poof! Add K's Choice to that list (and her song was even used in an anti-drug commercial). Edwyn Collins's "A Beautiful Girl Like You" and the few hits from The Lemonheads, Urge Overkill, and The Stereo MCs are also sorely missed. Madonna is still being played on the radio, but when was the last time one listened to "Bedtime Story," "This Used To Be My Playground," or "Justify My Love"? H e l l , they won't even play Duran Duran's "Electric Barbarella" and that is a sign that radio is dead :-/

They still play Edwyn Collins in my neck of the woods.  The only Stereo MC's song they play is "Connected."  I prefer "Elevate My Mind" and "Step It Up" and I haven't heard them on radio in a long time.  I hardly hear anything off Madonna's "Bedtime Stories or "Erotica"  and don't think I ever heard "Electric Barbarella" on the radio.  Found out about that one by way of promo disc for the club.  I had it in heavy rotation for a couple of months in '98.  I agree w/Hairspray, radio does suck.  Same 20 songs in different order all day.

And now we have live by our own keen sense in music and track it down ourselves. It's fun and kind of tough at the same time. I mean, when I go purchase a new set of cds I use all sorts of weird and wacked out criteria like the cover or the title of the song or even the name of a band (I still can't believe that I didn't buy a Clan Of Xymox album for the lame reason that I didn't like their name!). The worst part of all is that some of these cds can turn out to be duds and most stores don't have an "open cd" return policy (Tower Records has become VERY stringent on this). End Quote

I'm the same way.  For a while I used to buy music for DJing solely based on the record label that put it out (was big into Strictly Rhythm and LOGIC Records in the mid-90's).  Nowadays I find myself using the remixer as a reason to purchase (Thunderpuss, Hex Hector, Johnny Vicious, etc.).

Some of the stores here have listening stations so you can preview a cd or record before actually making a purchase.

Speaking of Strictly Rhythm, have you bought or received a copy of Laura Branigan's new 12" single on that label, a cover of ABBA's 1981 hit, "The Winner Takes it All"? If so, what do you think? Thunderpuss feat Latanza Waters - Stand Up (same vocalist/rendition of Love Tribe's 1996 version on DV8 (domestic) and AM:PM (import))

I bought this track a few years ago on their label called "Eternal Flames" by Hypertrophy.  Still playing that one when someone is in the mood for a good progressive house track...

Hey, Jonman - must be another Canuck, LOL! Haywire never had any hits south of the border (mainly because they never managed to get a U.S. record deal, which was a shame), but I love their early stuff from the mid to late '80s! My favorite was/is 1987's "Dance Desire"... :)

I think they used that on the Pet Semetary 2 soundtrack when the dead guy is skinning the rabbits...great little ditty that one! ;D

For Blur, I like "There's No Other Way," a lot better. I believe Kristin Hersh from Throwing Muses sang along with Michael Stipe Actually, I thought that was her song. L7 had some good tunes, too. "Shove" kicked ass, but I like songs like "Off the Wagon," and "I Need." Those you hear even less than "Pretend We're Dead."

As for the Ace Of Base, they were one of the best pop-rock bands to ever come out of the 90s, period. I know people will disagree on that, but that is my opinion. Life Is A Flower was one of the best songs at the time it was released.

Bobo, you get the Simpsons in England? Cool  :D

For anyone with MTV2: do you ever watch the show "120 Minutes" on Sunday nights at 8pm? They play a lot of early 90s rock with the occasional 80s video thrown in for good measure. This past Sunday I caught a few minutes and saw Morrissey (swoon -- yeah, I'm a Smiths fan) and the Catherine Wheel's "Black Metallic" (bad video, awesome song).

I agree with you there - I loved Ace Of Base - There first release was the first album i ever bought :) They made some great pop tunes in the early 90's - but i didn't really like life is a flower, prefered 'always have, always will' from that CD.

I never here '7 Seconds' by Youssou n'dour and Nenah Cherry on the radio anymore. That song is one of my all time favourites. Also never here anything really by En Vougue, Snap, Brand New Heavies, Incognito, Salt 'n' Pepa and Belinda Carlisle's 90's stuff such as 'in too deep' - love that tune :)
Regret - New Order seems to be forgotten also. Radio seems to just play 'True Faith' and 'Blue Monday' nowadays.

Any party i go to which has a dj - they always seem to dig out the Macerena and Saturday Night - so i still here them plenty even if its not on the radio ( which i must add isn't a bad thing that they are never played! ) :)

90's songs I never hear on the radio stations anymore where I live:

"Nothing Compares To You" - Sinead O'Conner (radio use to play this song allllllllllllll the time when it first came out)
"Insane To The Brain"- Cypress Hill (I remember back in 93 when I was 10, everyone use to bump this in their car stereo when ever the radio played this)
"It Was A Good Day" - Ice Cube
"Cradle Of Love" - Billy Idol
"Cherry Pie" - can't remember who sings it, but its by some metal band.
"Loosing My Religion" - R.E.M.
All singles that U2 released in the 90's.
All of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, & Smashing Pumpkins
"Nothing Else Matters" - Metellica
All Of the early stuff of Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Dr. Dre, & MC Eiht
"It's Funky Enough" - The D.O.C. (I was 6 when this came out back in late 89. I remember the rap/r&b station use to play this jam to death. But I still love it, though I never hear it anymore)
"Good Vibrations" - Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch
"Summertime" - DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
"Everybody Dance Now" - C+C Factory
"Express Yourself" - N.W.A (the only N.W.A track that got radio play back in summer of 89)
"Vogue" - Madonna
"My Mind Playing Tricks On Me" - Geto Boys
"Been Around The World" - can't remember the artist. (no, not the one that P. Diddy ripped off back in 97, but the original that came out in 90 I think, but I can't remember her name)
"Black or White" - Michael Jackson

that's all I can think of.

I always loved British bands back then. At least the band names were really funny. Ned's Atomic Dustbin comes from my favourite radio comedy show (The Goon Show). And Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine was a couple of lads bit like a violent Billy Bragg. I preferred PWEI's "Can You Dig It?".

I suppose I'll just pop "Inspiral Carpets" in there, as well.

I really loved the original version of "There She Goes" as performed by The Las, rather watered down by Sixpence None the Richer, I thought.

And of course, The Smiths. "If a ten-ton truck kills the both of us / to die by your side - well, the pleasure, the privilege is mine" (There Is A Light That Never Goes Out) - a classic bit of self-loathing by Morrissey set to yet another hauntingly beautiful melody. I saw it on a local video show and it took about two years before they played it again...

I heard a Bryan Adams Superstar Triple-Play thing this afternoon, and its not long since I last heard the Divinyls song. It doesn't half go out of your head quickly though. As a response to an earlier message, though on this thread. We, in England get 2-3 episodes of The Simpsons a week, with extra episodes at Christmas. Depending on what day it is, currently we have been receiving season 9 first-run episodes. We, in fact, have just seen Natural Born Kissers. Man, was that funny or what? As for the animation, those notorious nipple pics DO exist in the completed version of the episode. I guess if you haven't read about it, or watched that episode for a while, you won't know which one I'm talking about. One of my other favorites that I watched this morning on video was All Singing All Dancing - the musical clip show. Man, was that funny.

I'll Be There- this may be the one from the Escape Club...it goes something like "Over mountains, over trees, over rivers, over seas, just call my name and I'll be there. Don't be afraid, my love, I'll be watching you from above..."

Love of a Lifetime is by Firehouse- I still love this song

That is one of my favorite songs, but I'm not sure whether I should buy it or not, since I've heard it so much, I'd probably scream if I heard it any more

Damn - u just beat me 2 it :)
The Real McCoy - their not a band you hear of very often. I prefer 'Love And Devotion' think thats a great song, whereas 'Another Night' is the song most assoociated wuth them. Also what about:
Nightcrawlers - Push The Feeling On
Love City Groove - Love City Groove ( eurovison '95)
Billie Ray Martin - Your Loving Arms ( great song)
Incognito - Dont You Worry Bout a thing
Babylon Zoo - Spaceman ( technically '96 - so not early 90's, but still)
Chacka demus and pliers - Twist and Shout
Ace of base - Living in Danger and Lucky love ( radios/music tv will usually play their other songs)
Utah Saints - Something Good

More to come im sure :)

I could be wrong, but i think that the Nenah Cherry and Lisa Stansfield songs were both in the late 80's.

"Buffalo Stance" was 80's (89.)

"All Around the World" was on Stansfields 89 album, but I don't think it charted till the 90's.

If it is the song I am thinking of, All Around The World by Lisa Stansfield didn't chart here until around 91-92. I can't remember off-hand though - it may have been a similar song that I know.

I never hear early 90's dance songs like, 'Everybody in the place', 'House of Love', 'Ebeneezer goode', 'Something Good', 'On a regga tip', 'Incredible', 'Run to You', 'I'm gonna get you' at all anymore.

Wow! Somebody else that's into early Prodigy, RuPaul (I'm assuming given the time frame), Shamen, Utah Saints, SL2, (don't know who sings "Incredible), Rage and Bizarre Inc.

What about "Dominator", "O Fortuna", "James Brown is Dead", "Who Is Elvis", "Spice", etc...?

You are kind of right, as the original was released in the '87. However, it was re-released in '96 in England definitly ( not sure about the States as dont live there! ), and charted a lot higher then its original release over here. I love this song. Shame they didn't relase what a great song it was first time around :)

A fantastic group which I never here songs by on the radio, has to be the Cranberries. Delores - what a voice!

Also, I never here 'What's The Frequency Kenneth?' by REM
(This and others songs by REM tend to be overshadowed by Loosing My Religion/Everybody Hurts/Shiny Happy People etc..)
