Subject: Favourite British Songs of the 80s

Written By: whistledog on 08/28/24 at 11:30 pm

Some of the best songs of the 80s came out of the UK and this thread is an ode to those great songs.  Whether they were popular around the world, or maybe they never made it out of the UK, or maybe were not even hits, or maybe just album tracks.  Post some of your favourites!!

I will start with one that is somewhat obscure that I first heard on a CD compilation series called Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80s.  This is Images of Heaven by Peter Godwin and while it never charted in the UK, it peaked at #5 on the US Bubbling Under Chart (which means it missed the Hot 100 by 5 spots) and it is just such a fantastic track!

Rough Justice was the 3rd single from Bananarama's 2nd album.  While not released in the US or Canada, it peaked at #23 in the UK and is my favourite song from the album (as much as I love Cruel Summer, I quite like this one more)

Here is Cath by The Bluebells.  I first heard this song back in the 90s on the aforementioned CD series Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80s and I instantly loved it.  First released in 1982, this song peaked at UK #62, then a remixed re-release peaked at UK #38 in 1984.  I don't know if this single was released in the US or Canada, but I know the album it was released on titled Sisters was released at least here in Canada as I own it on both vinyl and cassette tape.  When the album is that good, you gotta have both versions!

It seems like a good majority of my favorite songs of the 80's are British, but here's the first two that come to mind:

Remember the blonde girl that Riggs falls in love with in Lethal Weapon 2?  Her name is Patsy Kensit and she was the lead singer of a British pop group called Eighth Wonder.  Their 1988 song Cross My Heart peaked at UK #13 and US #56 and it's really good!

They also had another hit that same year called I'm Not Scared that was written by Pet Shop Boys.  This peaked at UK #8 and is also really good!

Culture Club had lots of hits, but their 1986 single Move Away is seldom talked about.  It became their 9th UK Top 40 hit (10th in the US and Canada) and it's really catchy!

Did you know The Escape Club are British?  Not many do, and I think it's mostly because they are best known for a song about the American Frontier.  It wasn't their only hit, but it was 100% their best... Wild Wild West peaked at #1 in the US, #2 in Canada and would you believe they had no hits in their native UK?

I could probably come up with several of them.

My first contribution to this thread will be:

Here is a one hit wonder from 1988 called You Don't Know by Scarlett & Black.  It peaked at #20 in the US and #52 in Canada and is from the soundtrack to the 1987 motion picture Hiding Out.  This one is super fun to sing along with!

In 1979, Cliff Richard released We Don't Talk Anymore, and it became his 69th UK Top 40 hit where it peaked at UK #1 that same year.  While it was not an 80s hit in his native UK, it was in the US, where it peaked at US #7 (becoming his 4th US Top 40 hit) and #4 in Canada (becoming his 17th Canadian Top 40 hit) in early 1980.

I wish I knew why Cliff was not as successful this side of the pond, but I am certainly glad this song was one that made it.  Anyone who is familiar with it knows how awesome it is!

Here is one that doesn't get enough love... The third single from Cutting Crew was called One For the Mockingbird and while it only peaked at #52 in their native UK, it peaked at #38 in the US and also made #47 in Canada

JoBoxers were a one album wonder that launched 3 hit singles into the UK Top 40.  One of those songs titled Just Got Lucky peaked at UK #7 and became a one hit wonder in the US when it peaked at US #36

If I had to pick my 10 favourite songs of the 80s, I still question would this one be #1?  Wishful Thinking by China Crisis peaked at UK #9, and while it did not chart in the US or Canada, the album it appeared on titled Working With Fire and Steel: Possible Pop Songs Volume 2 (which made #20 in the UK) peaked at #36 in Canada and the song was released as a single on both 7" and 12" as I own Canadian pressings of both.  This is truly one of the most beautiful songs of the decade!
