Subject: 1980s All Rap/Hip-Hop Thread

Written By: whistledog on 03/14/24 at 10:37 pm

Rap/Hip-Hop generally isn't my cup of tea, but every now and then, there is a song that comes along that I enjoy.  Do you have any rap/hip-hop favourites of the 1980s?

I will begin with this one from 1988 called Cars With the Boom by an American female duo called L'Trimm.  This peaked at #54 on the US Hot 100

Kurtis Blow is an early pioneer of rap music and in 1979, became the first rap artist to sign with a major label.  Throughout the 80s, he had varying degrees of success on the US R&B and dance charts, but on the US Hot 100, he only had 2 hits, and this fantastic track was one of them!  Basketball peaked at US #71 in 1985 and while it's not my favourite sport, it's my favourite Kurtis Blow track!

Tone Loc: Wild Thing and Funky Cold Medina, both from late 1988/early 1989, readily come to mind.

I'm actually more of a rap/hip-hop fan than most on here, and the 80's had some good ones as well. Here is one that's been on my mind lately. Most notable for sampling the Inspector Gadget theme.

Morris Minor and the Majors - Stutter Rap (No Sleep 'Til Bedtime) (1988)

This one was essentially a comedy song by British comedian Tony Hawks (no, not the skateboarder lol) aimed as a parody of the 1987 Beastie Boys song No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn (and also slightly parodies the 1984 hit I Feel For You by Chaka Khan).  This peaked at #4 in the UK, #2 in Australia and #14 in Canada.  Despite it being a parody, I would see this song show up on a few rap compilation albums.  John Deacon of Queen makes a cameo appearance in the video

Hard to believe that Ice-T goes that far back.  He's now universally known for L&O: SVU, and I know fans of that show who had no idea he started out as a Rap artist

Here is the late Derek Boland, better known by his stage name Derek B.  He was the first UK Rap artist to enjoy mainstream pop success when he scored two UK Top 20 hits in 1988 including this one titled Bad Young Brother.  Shame this one was not a hit in North America.  It's such a fantastic track!

Yes, he started over 40 years ago as a single rap artist, now he has TV shows and a hot wife.
