Best songs of the 1980s sung by females. I still really like this one by the late great Natalie Cole. Such a beautiful song!

Here is a duo called DoubleDare. They only released one album, a self-titled release in 1986 that produced two hits in Canada. The name of the vocalist is Wendy Lands and this song is called Can't Hold On. This only peaked at #73 in Canada, but it was on the radio a lot and vocally, this is one of my favourite songs of the decade. Also, this song features a saxophone, which would have been a selling point for me regardless!

Drop The Pilot is such a good song. It should have been a bigger hit in North America.

Cyndi Lauper has to be mentioned on this thread. Sure, “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” and “Time After Time” were big hits for her in 1984.. but so was this catchy one:
“She Bop”

There's quite a bit of history behind that song:
The song was considered controversial, as it dealt with masturbation. It was included on the Parents Music Resource Center's "Filthy Fifteen" list, due to its sexual lyrics; this led to the creation of the Parental Advisory sticker. Lauper told The Howard Stern Show she recorded the vocals while nude. She has stated that finding a copy of gay men's magazine Blueboy lying around in the recording studio provided the impetus for writing "She Bop". The magazine is mentioned in the first verse. The single has been released in over 32 variations across the world, the most common being a two-track 7" single (with varying covers) and a two-track 12" vinyl single (also with varying covers).

It's No Secret is a song from the 1988 debut album Kylie by Kylie Minogue. While not released as a single in Europe, it was in North America and in early 1989, it peaked at #37 in the US and #74 in Canada. This would be her last chart single in the US and Canadian Hot/Top 100 chart until 2001 when she returned with Can't Get You Out of My Head

Here is a 1982 single titled Holdin' On by American singer Tané Cain. At the time, she was the wife of Journey songwriter/keyboardist Jonathan Cain, and the song peaked at #37 in the US. She is technically not a one hit wonder, though it was her only entry in the US Hot 100. I really enjoy this one!

Irene Cara was an American pop singer best known for the 1980 hit Fame and the 1983 hit Flashdance... What A Feeling!, but what's not often discussed is the 5 other US Top 40 hits she had. This one from 1983 called Why Me? peaked at #13 in the US, #23 in Canada and #86 in the UK

In the 1970s, Ann and Nancy Wilson helped pave the way for women in rock music with their band Heart. In the early 80s, their popularity started to decline, then in 1985, they were handed a song called What About Love which became their comeback hit. The song was originally written for the Canadian group Toronto, who recorded it but decided not to release it on an album or as a single. Foolish move if you ask me!

The rejection for single or album release actually caused a pseudo break-up of Toronto. The two members who co-wrote it saw hit potential, and after being outvoted, they exited the band and shopped the song around and it worked out extremely well for them. The Heart version gave them the international hit they never had with Toronto
Something else not many know about the Heart version is the background vocals are performed by Mickey Thomas and Grace Slick of Starship, also famed songwriter Holly Knight plays keyboards
