Subject: Failed shows of the 1980s

Written By: thames on 08/06/23 at 7:28 pm

Here's my example: "Joe's World" (1979-80)

Most of this one-season wonder aired in 1980 so it's borderline but oh well.
Cassandra Cooper Ingalls from the 1880s obviously enjoys the 1980s more 🙂
(Cassandra: "Oh, thank the Lord! Pants!")
Peter Brady looks like he's Matthew McConaughey's character in "Dazed and Confused" 🙂
("That's what i love about high school girls: I get older, they stay the same age!")

Living Dolls.  It aired for half a season in 1989 and was a spin-off from Who's the Boss.  It started Leah Remini as Charlie Briscoe, a Brooklyn tomboy who becomes a fashion model

Kaleena is better known for that Leave it to Beaver sequel series.

Not related but they wasted so much time of revivals of the Brady Bunch when other series merited it more.

Wasn't Brady Bunch Christmas one of them?

IMO a failed show is one that lasts for 13 weeks or less. In terms of game shows, Camouflage (1980, a revival of the early 1960s show), Hit Man (1983, hosted by Peter Tomarken of Press Your Luck fame), Just Men! (1983, starring Betty White), Guilty or Innocent (1984, hosted by Melvin Belli that was an unsuccessful attempt at a courtroom-themed game show), Your Number's Up (1985, hosted by Nipsey Russell that involves players' phone numbers vying for prizes), Bruce Forsyth's Hot Streak (1986), Bargain Hunters (1987, hosted by Peter Tomarken that really felt like part of a shop at home program rather than an actual game for prizes), Blackout (1988, hosted by Bob Goen that involves disabling a clue giver's speech by an opponent), Treasure Mall (1988, which was produced by the same team that would bring Power Rangers abroad), and Pictionary (1989, starring Head of the Class star Brian Robbins) all failed to go further than that mark.

Nearly Departed 1989

Revolves around a college professor and his wife who were killed in a landslide and they're incognito so they haunt the family who purchases their mansion and nobody else in the family can see them except for the grandfather of the family.
It starred Eric Idle of Monty Python fame and Caroline McWilliams from Soap.  It, what I thought, was a massive failure because it was cancelled after only 6 episodes.

There were a lot of failed TV shows of the 80s that were based on popular movies.  Here are two of them...

Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1987) - 13 episodes (8 of them aired)

Hector Elizondo in the Richard Dreyfuss role; Anita Morris in the Bette Midler role; Tim Thomerson in the Nick Nolte role.  This was the first show ever on the FOX network to be cancelled

Nothing in Common (1987) - 7 episodes

Todd Waring in the Tom Hanks role; Bill Macy in the Jackie Gleason role

Robocop (1988) - 12 episodes

This one is animated:  Why not make a Saturday morning cartoon based on a violent R Rated movie.  This will go over real well LOL

Alien Nation 1989-1990

Revolves around an alien slave ship that crash landed in the middle of the Mojave Dessert in California.  George Francisco and his family consisting of his wife Susan and their two children Buck and Emily.  As hard as George and his family try to fit into their new life on Earth they know that not all humans are going to be kind to them as they are newcomers to Earth.

Fox hadn't anticipated the lack of advertising revenue and cancelled Alien Nation after only one season.

Anyone imagining Sally Struthers *singing* the oldies song "Gloria" now?

No, I can't imagine it.

In terms of soap operas, Rituals (1984-85) and Berringer's (barely two months in early 1985) are also worth a mention, given the popularity of the genre at the time. The later took place at a department store, with the founder of the store a real-life Wanamaker, which was part of a former department store empire. Rituals was the only nighttime syndicated soap opera of the '80s, and starred Kin Shriner as art professor in a college town and briefly starred President Reagan's daughter Patti Davis early in its run, but was ultimately shoved to early morning or mid-afternoon slots on the stations that didn't drop it by the time the show wrapped up production in July 1985.
