Subject: Why were the '80s so magical for pop culture?

Written By: Slim95 on 10/03/21 at 2:27 am

What events led up to make this decade a pop culture haven? Literally no decade compares to it when it comes to variety and explosion of pop culture.

The 1980s saw the emergence of electronic dance music and new wave, also known as Modern Rock, also disco fell out of fashion in the decade's early years genres such as post-disco, Italo disco, Euro disco, and dance-pop became more popular.

The 1950s did as well. At least I think so anyway.

It was everything. Esp.the music, and fashion!

Cable TV.

Prior to that, most places had 4 networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, & PBS). Some areas like NYC had more. But once cable came about, then those networks had to fill them with content. Fox network became a force with shows like Married With Children, In Living Color, and of course The Simpsons to name a few.

Then there was MTV-which showcased music (yeah, those were the days when the "M" stood for music. Who knows what it stands for now.) There was also the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon & HBO. There was even the Playboy Channel but they are still struggling to find their footing. I'm surprised they are still around.

Then you had the rise of the news channels-first there was CNN Headline News which soon launched into CNN followed by Fox and MSNBC. The Weather Channel also made it's debut in the '80s.

There was now something for everyone. There were now 57 channels and nothing on.

The Playboy Channel is still around?  :o  :o  What about Cinemax? Do they still show softcore porn? I remember when I first got cable circa 1984-ish Cinemax showed actual movies and was considered on par with HBO. At some point they switched to softcore and became a punchline.

I was surprised to find out that the Playboy Channel is still around. (I looked it up when I wrote my last post.) I never had Cinemax. I just looked it up but Cinemax is now owned by the same company as HBO. Yeah, so much for competition.

I am not sure if Playboy Channel is still around but I think you might have to pay for a movie now if you want to watch one. A lot of the channels for late night adult entertainment back then when came the times when they were about to have sex, they didn't show the genital area so most of the times they'd show the top area and the butt cheeks only.

Actually, Cinemax has been owned by HBO since nearly the beginning. You'll see similar graphics packages if you check out the old promos. They're still around, complete with their own subchannels. Speaking of which, Cinemax (and HBO, Showtime, The Movie Channel, and other cable services) was also why the VCR grew in tandem; instead of waiting for either on the TV or your local revival movie house playing your favorite movie, you could suddenly buy a blank tape, record that movie, and then watch it over and over again until the tape wears out. And despite that, Hollywood continued to thrive with its blockbuster formula to fund the major studios, and also many independent/small studios had a good decade as well. Speaking of which, there was so much more variety in terms of cable providers (North America only) that provided competition with others in terms of price and channel selections, and it was usually quite affordable (around $15 a month for a "good" service that came with around 20-30 channels). Major markets would usually have around a dozen different cable providers.
