In the days Jess was a hippie
On each foot she wore a skippy
They made her feel so good
She walked the length of the Mississippi!

I had various pairs and that was way back in 1989. I wore them with party socks...They are also available in colors. Google Skippies shoes.

Oh ok those. I never heard them called skippies. Just cheap plain shoes. My mom wore them for restaurant work.

I thought the same thing. A bit like a bargain basement version of Vans.

They were called party socks because they came in all sorts of colors. And they were thick socks too! My skippies weren't really cheap they were actually very good quality shoes. The current ones are VERY cheap. But I haven't owned a pair since I was a kid.

In the 2010s my daughter was into these socks with bright colorful patterns and pictures, particularly of food. I guess it was a thing because her friends were doing it too and I was even finding them at Dunham’s. Yes these were thick socks too.

The unfortunate Vans/Keds knock-off Skippies are certainly not proving to be as all-powerful as the exalted Jelly Shoes! They do look a bit generic.

The only Skippy I know is Skippy the Bush Kangaroo (known commonly as Skippy) is an Australian television series created by Australian actor John McCallum, Lionel (Bob) Austin and Lee Robinson produced from 1967 to 1969 (airing from 1968 to 1970) about the adventures of a young boy and his highly intelligent pet kangaroo, and the various visitors to the fictional Waratah National Park in Duffys Forest, near Sydney.

We used to call them "girls' sneakers" as opposed to "boys' sneakers."

It was WAY cooler to wear boys' sneakers. Girls sneakers were just so...icky. :D

Yes, that brand was quite popular/widespread in the late 1980s and beyond.

Over the years,
Fads do change,
Like rockers becoming hippies.
But one fad did not change,
Was Jelly Shoes,
favoured over Skippies.

Same here, because that is a popular brand of peanut butter. That's the only "Skippy" product I've ever heard of.

It starred in the cast Ed Devereaux, who appeared several "Carry On" films, and a young Liza Goddard, who went on to appear in many British TV shows and once was married to the singer Alvin Stardust.
