I used to go to discos in the '80s. What really bothered me about most of them were the fact that they played the music so loud that you had to scream into the ear of the people you were with in order to talk to them. A total turn off.

I did a TON of clubbing in the 80's, especially '86 and later.  Perhaps to excess, but who's counting?  :)

Yes, they indeed were very loud - a lousy place to hold lengthy conversations.  But since I went there for drinking, dancing and picking up guys, I put up with the loudness.  ::)

Well it must have been tons of fun with all the great 80s music..I wish I would have been old enough in the 80s to go clubbing. I was too busy collecting Jem and the Hologram dolls back then! Lol. But at least I do remember the music and fashion.

Indeed, cigarette smoke in the clubs was rampant.  In the 1980's most of us were used to that smell, although I never cared for it.  But anyone old enough remembers, a lot of our offices smelled like that, too.

Well it must have been tons of fun with all the great 80s music.

The music and dancing part was pretty great.  As far as picking up guys, as well as too much drinking, I eventually figured out the error of my ways.  :-\\  But at the time that's what I enjoyed doing.

You're right. We were used to the smell. Offices, clubs, public places, even on planes and trains (and don't kid yourself. You could smell it even if you were in the "no smoking" section). When I think of it now I wonder how we did it. Blech!  8-P I used to take a shower when I came home from rock clubs or dance clubs just to get the smell of it out of my hair and off my skin. But there wasn't much I could do about my coat. I couldn't be washing it or having it dry cleaned every day. Eventually the smell would wear off.

I hate to bust your rose colored balloon, but in the end it wasn't all that great or glamorous. Lots of deceitful or just plain shallow people. LOTS of shallow people. But oh, well. Live and learn. I'm not sorry I went through it.

So you discoed through the 80s. The timing of all this is  very interesting. You would have been in your 40s at the time. I seldom saw too many 40-somethings in the dance clubs in those days. Funny you don't mention discoing in the 70s, the height of the disco period. Perhaps you were following other pursuits at that time.

Sammy’s was the nightclub in town I went to the most. Some songs I hear now take me straight back to dancing there on Saturday nights with my friends Gill and Michelle.

The price of drinks meant we only drank tap water actually in the club. We would go to a pub first.

I did all my dancing in the 70-80's and even some in the 90's.....and my very early dancing was when I was 16-17 back in 50's...got married in early 60's and quit dancing as he had 2 left feet, when we divorced, I got my groove back....we didn't divorce due to his not dancing.....

And we didn't do much talking and the like, we went to dance.  and meet the boys....

Actually mom had me tap dancing at 11-12 yrs of age....yep a tapper...

As for the smoke, it never bothered me and my gf's and I did NOT smoke and did not date a guy who did, once met a great guy and he smoked and I almost didn't give him my number, but a friend said "oh why not"...we had a long relationship and he even
quit smoking on my support and push....what a great guy.  He wanted marriage, I did not, so he went back to MN and yep, ended up smoking again, with his wife....

You're close to my mom's age.  I need to know (Mom's no longer here) - were poodle skirts as popular as she told me they were?  She said everyone wore poodle skirts then, usually with bobby socks.  What did you observe?

Oh yes I had a couple poodle skirts, and bobby socks and the black/white saddle shoes, and that was the 50's, I graduated high school 56 so I remember it all.  What a great time we had, lots of  fun, heartbreaks with bf's but good clean fun.

Just remember my last dancing fun was a big alpine hall here in L.A. area where ummpa bands came to play and it was a great european crowd, did a lot of polka dancing...,  that was when I was in my later 50's, and then knees and back started to hollar  so I had to stop.

Gee, I so enjoyed this  journey, thanks all.

70's and 80's disco dancing was the same pretty much.

I never got into the "slide" and "hustle" dancing and I probably stopped my dancing life in later 50's, as I said I  went to dance hall in LA area and they had polka bands and waltzes etc....    My  joints made me give it up.

No copulating my friend.....  Maybe when they got home but not on dance floors....

BTW:  Those poodle skirts were really dumb thinking about them.  Long unattractive flannel drapped on one's body....

No - I was 19 when the 70's ended, old enough to know about but not old enough to get into a club.  Plus, I was a poor college student then.

I did a lot of disco-ing in the 70's but it was limited to college parties on and off campus.  Believe me, these parties were jumping (or if not, I'd make a quick exit).  One thing is, I befriended a popular campus D.J. and his gang - I hung out with them a lot, which had its own "privileges".  Except I had a bit of falling out with them in my later years at university (nothing terrible, I just stopped hanging out with them).  Eventually I left university (which had nothing to do with these friends, but had a whole lot to do with incessant partying - among other factors).  That's when I took my year off college and worked.

You seem fixated on these to establishments. Studio 54 closed in 1980 due to troubles with the law including tax evasion. The owners were highly shady. In reopened in 1981 and hung on until 1994 if you can believe that. By then it was very passe. Paradise Garage, a primarily gay club which featured an array of live performers, lasted until 1987. It operated a bit more undo the radar than Studio 54, even though Tim Curry immortalized it in song. You had to be a bit "in the know" to go there.

I'm just a bit curious, that's all, never said I was "fixated".  ::)

Never saw this - pretty impressive place.  Huge - the clubs I went to in the 80's weren't that big.  The video would've been better with some virtual patrons.

Do you remember when the clubs shut down after The 80's?

They didn't all shut down at the same time.  By the time most were shutting down/re-purposing, I was no longer clubbing so I don't remember that much about them.  :-\\

I think she meant me and Howie. He became petulant when I innocently, charmingly, nicely, sweetly and very diplomatically suggested he had more than a passing interest in the disco era. You know it would be far from me to goad anybody.  ;D

But you know - when the folkses come accusing, they always accuses the whole lot of us...  ;)

(BTW I frequently use that line about myself with hubby when accused, "who, sweet little innocent me?"  ;D )

I think I have found the reasons on Google:

In 1980, the club shut down after its founders were convicted for evading taxes. They sold the club to Mark Fleischman, who reopened it, then sold it in 1984 to new owners, who closed it in 1986.

How could one evade taxes?

Got it.

Hmmmm, I think it's not that hard to do - but a reputable business establishment will go out of their way not to have tax issues, because it can easily destroy a business (case in point)...

What would've happened if they had paid their taxes, Would Studio 54 still be around? ???
