Subject: I Have A Serious Question To Ask

Written By: c_keenan2001@hotmail.com on 05/03/20 at 1:40 am

Please don't get mad if I have this in the wrong forum because I'm not sure if this belongs here or in Food Glorious Food and it's mostly because I wouldn't exactly call a chocolate milk mix food?

Does anybody remember Brown Cow chocolate syrup in the bottle with the cartoon cow on it? I haven't seen it in stores in ages and I've only recently come across a Brown Cow commercial from 1986.
It was a chocolate syrup of sorts that you squirt into your glass of milk, you stir it with a spoon, and you drink it up.  I used to love this stuff but now it's either not being made anymore or it's very hard to come by.

That brand wasn't available in the UK. The go to brand for milkshake was Nesquik.  I think there was a syrup called something like Crusha.

In the 80s I was a Hershey's chocolate syrup guy when I made my own choc milk.

So it was the same kid from Christmas story. I remember him looking like that. For liquid I only remember Hershey syrup. I don’t remember brown cow. Seemed any liquid was too expensive for us.

In the 80s for dry mix there was ovaltine. And this knockoff called pdq. That’s what we used. It had colorful superhero stickers under the cap that you could collect.

I only used nesquick when my kid was little in the early 2000s.

I think the brand was essentially a Canadian brand.  I don't recall ads for it in the U.S. - at least not around Chicagoland.  Part of the reason I suspect it wasn't promoted in the U.S. is given that it is sized in grams (as opposed to ounces).  At least that is what I found on Google.

In the U.S. the go-to brand for chocolate syrup has generally been Hershey's.  (I thought I saw something on Google suggesting that the brand might be a subsidiary of Hershey's, not sure  ??? )

Incidentally, I just opened the fridge to examine my bottle of Hershey's chocolate syrup (it's actually Hershey's Lite).  The weight line at the bottom reads exactly as follows: Net Wt 18.5 oz (1 lb 2.5 oz) 524 g

This doesn't ring any bells for me as an Ontario kid in the late 1990s, so it must've went out before that. Maybe @whistledog or @Slashpop can chime in?  ???

For chocolate syrup I used to use Nesquik. I'm really craving it now.

I don't remember hearing anything about a brown cow.  As a kid I liked Nestle for the lighter chocolate and have now grown to forse myself to take the dark chocolate of Hershey's because it helps me go #2.

Yeah, I remember the Brown Cow brand, but I haven't seen it on store shelves in decades.  I seem to recall there was a strawberry flavoured one as well

Same here. I don't recall having anything to make our milk chocolate besides cereals like Cocoa Krispies, Cocoa Pebbles or Count Chocula. Then again, although we didn't have things like Hershey's Syrup like a lot of kids had, we had a computer when many families didn't. Different priorities, I guess.

It is the brand lots of small coffee shops use for their milkshakes. I also dimly remember pouring it on plain ice cream to make like a strawberry ripple effect

Or just weren’t trying to buy milkshake

I was never into milkshake, even the one in McDonald's.
