Subject: Oops Up Side Your Head - Gap Band

Written By: karen on 04/08/20 at 1:54 pm

I know it technically came out in late 79, but I’d argue it’s an eighties song.

It was playing on the radio earlier this evening and my son and I were talking about the dance that goes with this song. You sit on the floor in a long line and do various rowing actions back and forth then side to side. Mix it up with a shoulder shimmy or a hand roll.

Is this just a UK thing?

Yes, I have seen it before, but not for a long time now, I was wondering was it demonstrated on Top of the Pops?

That’s it. My mother in law blames her bad hips on doing this dance on holiday

Too late now to put in a claim?

On wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oops_Up_Side_Your_Head

"In the UK, this song is typically "danced" to by sitting on the floor in rows and performing a rhythmic "rowing" action. The origin of this unusual dance is credited to DJ Nigel Tolley. (The same rowing on the floor is also done to Rock the Boat by The Hues Corporation.) It was especially popular during the 1980s."

It is British?

So Howard, did you ever dance to it with the row boat dance I mentioned?

BTW, I certainly did not, and cannot do now.

You mean when I was a kid in school, was never taught that dance at all but by the way I know that Gap Band sang it in 1979 but who sung the one from The U.K.?

I don’t think it is Gap Band singing in the version I posted here. I used this video to show the dance. It is the dance I am interested in.

It peaked in the chart in 1980  It is 100% an 80s hit
It still shocks me how much more popular The Gap Band were in the UK than they were in the US and Canada, considering they are American.

Would you happen to know who's singing the kids version?

I do not.  Possibly Mini Pop Kids or a similar type group?

Yes we definitely did that chain dance at school discos.

My favourite Gap Band track came out in 1986. This track sounds great played loud in your car on a summer's day!

I've noticed a lot of American black hits charted much higher in the UK, than in the US during this period. I presume it is because the UK is smaller than the US, so the target market is easier to tap. In the US there are so many different charts and radio stations... rnb, country, dance.

Examples:-

The Jacksons "Can You Feel It" : UK #6 / US #77

Diana Ross "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" : UK #1 / US #66

Sister Sledge "Frankie" : UK #1 / US #75

Diana Ross "Chain Reaction" : UK #1 / US #66

Jocelyn Brown "Somebody Else's Guy" : UK #13 / US #75
