Subject: 1989: Best Year of the 1980s?
Written By: oldmusicfan on 03/24/20 at 7:26 pm
Was 1989 the best year of the 1980s? ABC TGIF, Gameboy, The Simpsons Christmas Special, TMNT cartoon merchandise, Batman, Hangin’ Tough by the New Kids on the Block, the first season of Saved By The Bell, National Lampoon Christmas Vacation, Back to the Future 2, Discovery Zone and Rhythm Nation 1814 all came out of 1989. What do you think? Was there another year of the 1980s that had it all over 1989? Let’s discuss this here.

The best year of the 1980s that I can remember was either 1985 or 1987. And without all the bad headlines and news, I would also say 1986.

Why those years?

Okay so 1989 was a fun year for me, but like i mentioned in another thread, it wasn't my core "everything's happy" carefree childhood. So it's hard to see 1989 as the best. For me that would be 1985 (or anywhere between 83-87).

On a personal level 1989 was peculiar - I won't elaborate. In regards to pop culture, mid-1988 is the start of when I became quickly disenfranchised, and I wasn't enjoying music or TV shows the way I had earlier in the 80's. To me it was becoming more 90's-ish by around mid-1988 (though naturally I didn't identify it that way then).
The one thing I didn't mind then was the fashion - but I always felt okay about 80's fashion (even though I ultimately preferred 90's fashion).

My carefree childhood years were from 1984 to 1989. :)

For me it was at least the most nostalgic. It was when I got my first Walkman, started getting my own music, choosing my own clothes and hairstyle and all. Also my dad had a good job and we did a lot of stuff like go to Niagara Falls and Mackinac island.
But I don’t think I can choose a best year a based on other than a personal level. All the 80s years had something great and their own character.
