Subject: Stereotypical 80s Environment or The Actual 80s

Written By: oldmusicfan on 03/16/20 at 1:41 pm

Which world would you rather live in? A stereotypical 80s environment or the world the way it actually was in the 80s?

Neither, I already did live through the 1980s.

Part of me is curious about how things would go in a stereotypical 80s environment. I imagine the new culture would be the only focus that people have. Bye Atari, Fantasy Island, and Star Wars sequels.

Neither. I already lived through the 80s. They were abysmal. Shallow, materialistic and artless.

Stereotypical 80s are inaccurate because Gen Xers look back at the 80s with rose tinted glasses.

I grew up in a very small area, hours from any city of considerable size. I still live there. I often wondered if the stereotypical 80s really happened in very large cities.

Exactly.

I was surprised to see the handbook Fer Shurr! How To Be A Valley Girl-Totally! at my library for 50 cents. I thought everyone loved the 1980s or at least it seemed that way towards the mid 2000s.

Californian girl talk was a bigger deal back in the 80s and early 90s.

“ Oh, my, God Becky, look at her butt.”

“ I can't believe it's just so round, it's like out there.”

That’s from this century. Guys in the 80s and 90s said “dude” and “awesome”, but that was mainly it.

I thought that was the way guys from the California area always talked like "tubular, "gnarly" or any other words they said.

Please no! Lol. This is off topic but, in the 90s everyone would tell me that my figure was "nearly perfect". I had a small waist, full hips, and my derriére was just right they said. Lol. Anyway, They would always sing that song to me, hahaha. I hate it. ;D

On topic: I never spoke like that. It sounds silly to me lol.

Mainly us XYers spoke like that because we didn’t know any better. Some Gen Xers did it too.

There were some Gen Xers that spoke in surfer talk in the very late 80s and very early 90s, but it was mainly Boomers and my micro-generation that did it.

Gen X used surfer talk in the late 80s and early 90s. Baby Boomers spoke like surfers from the 60s into the 90s. Gen XYers loved the words like “rad”, “gnarly”, and “tubular” in the mid to late 80s and early 90s.

Baby Boomers have been talking like surfers since they were teenagers who could ride waves.

There's a funny related phenomenon to this. Back in the 60s, certain entertainers who PRE-DATED the Baby Boom like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis and especially Sammy Davis Jr. decided they needed to update their image and started talking in what they thought was hip 60s lingo. Saying "groovy, baby" and such. It sounded very stiff and artificial coming from these tuxedoed Las Vegas "Rat Pack" types, but nonetheless they did it. The funny part is they KEPT doing it well into the 80s and even into the 90s for those who survived, long after this type of lingo had faded. It's like they didn't know it had gone away and they still thought they were being "hip" instead of looking more dated than ever. If one watched the Jerry Lewis Telethon (itself now a very dated and defunct institution) in the 80s, these Rat Packers were still saying things like "lay it on me, baby" and the like. Nobody else was talking like this.

When it comes to the stereotypical 80s environment, you’re not getting the full 80s atmosphere. Gen Xers only pick out what they liked about the 1980s when remembering them.
