Subject: The Golden Girls

Written By: oldmusicfan on 03/07/20 at 4:35 pm

I was reading The Golden Girls Twas The Night Before Christmas and The Golden Girls Thank You For Being A Friend at Barnes and Noble today and it got me to thinking—The Golden Girls was one of the greatest takeaways of the 1980s. The Golden Girls had everything we know the mid 1980s to early 1990s for — The Golden Girls were hip elderly women with great comebacks and the latest 80s and 90s styles. Do you love The Golden Girls as much as I do or was Designing Women the better show because of Delta Burke?

I used to watch the golden girls every Saturday night with my grandma when I was a kid. My folks bowled so that’s where we spent a lot of time. The show was funny.  I particularly remember the game show episode.  When I got older I learned to like the show as one of those guilty pleasures. In October 2018 when I laid in the hospital for 18 days I looked forward to watching a marathon of the golden girls every night on hallmark. I loved the theme music too. Was kinda sad when they switched to Christmas movies.

I don’t think I ever watched an episode of designing women. So I consider them as two different worlds. There was probably other shows on that we preferred more. Not a bad idea now, maybe I should look it up sometime and see if I like it. Delta Burke was cute after all.

Which Golden Girl did you laugh at the most? For me, it was a tie between Blanche and Sophia.

I laughed at Betty White and Sophia, they cracked me up the most with their Jewish humor.

She always talked about St.Olaf, if there was ever a place that existed.

There was. Quaint little place in Minnesota. Wikipedia says population 332. Which I can relate to since the town I grew up in was about 400 people.

One of the episodes I watched in the hospital, Rose said “what’s going to happen when only one of is left?” Of course Sophia snapped back “Oh I’ll be just fine!” But I found it kinda ironic that here she is the only one left.

I always thought St.Olaf was a foreign city in one of the countries.

I've not met anyone who doesn't like the Golden Girls. Golden Palace was actually a good spin off. I watched the very first episode a few months back and it still stood up - hilarious!

When did you first come across The Golden Girls?

Very good question actually. I'm not sure I watched it much during the actual 80s, but definitely did as an older teen in the 90s - especially as it was always on in reruns.

That’s how I discovered The Golden Girls, also. I was too busy watching other sitcoms or doing other things in the 80s and early 90s to catch The Golden Girls.

The Golden Girls had a spin-off called Empty Nest.
Empty Nest had a spin-off called Nurses.

I was a fan of all three shows.  At one point, they aired back to back on NBC and there was one week where within the universe of those shows, a Hurricane hit Miami and passed across all three shows.  The way they did that was so good.

Empty Nest was really popular from 1989 to 1990.
