For everything pop culture, in general, do you like 1980 to 1984 or 1985 to 1989?
I think Boomers, Joneses, early Xers, and the first half of core Xers would go with 1980 to 1984, whereas the last half of core Xers, late Xers, and Xennials would say 1985 to 1989.
What do you think?

You didn’t notice a change in things during the decade? “Baby Boomer musicians” and “Jones musicians” were a heck of a lot better from 1980 to 1984. “Xer artists” got a lot better near the other half of the decade.
I have heard people say that they like the decade in full and others complain about one half of the decade over the other. The average late Gen Xer loves the whole decade, whereas early Gen Xers do not.
