"99 Luftballoons" by Nena (1983/84) readily comes to mind. That one is in German, although there is one line that mentions "Captain Kirk".
Los Lobos' 1987 cover of "La Bamba", a Spanish-language song, also stands out.

Julio Iglesias was huge in the 80s, but chart-wise he wasn't recognised so much (same with Menudo). Anyway this got to #1 in the UK in 1981.
Sophia from the Golden Girls regularly referenced him and this song.

Foreign, of, from, in, or characteristic of a country or language other than one's own.
So technically, American and Australian are foreign for me.

I don't get this Eurovision Song Contest thing. What the heck is it? It seems even famous people participate. Why would famous people enter a game show talent contest?

The winner of the Eurovision Song Contest is decided by all of the countries involved, with each nation getting to award points to the other countries that they want to win. The scoring is based on a mix of viewer votes and the opinions of a music expert jury.

Makes no sense to me. The countries have to vote for other countries only? That's like being in an election and you and your family are forced to vote for somebody else. And why do already famous people enter? What do they get out of this since they are already established? And what wins, the singer or the song (if they are not one and the same)? And what is the prize?

BTW... your name triggers memories of someone who used to frequent the boards. He/she spammed the boards for a while, before self deleting (or being deleted) and reappearing under a slightly different alias, subsequently spamming the boards again etc. He/she had a penchant for incoherent rants about Bill Gates...
He/she eventually got banned permanently for repeatedly breaking the forum rules, I believe.

I never thought of it like that. I forget that songs sung in English would be foreign language to those whose first language is not English
