Neither, during the 1980s I preferred New Age music, with Enya and Claire Hamill.

There are thousounds of Dance-Pop songs that are backed by a House beat, so it is weird to compare those genres when one crosses a lot with the other ???

That's because "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" is backed by a typical synth line + synthesized bassline and claps that are found on the TR-808, while "Pump Up the Jam" has a repetitive, "four-on-four"-rythmed House beat instead.

Dance-Pop doesn't really have a sound to it, it's more of a term to use on any Pop song that has a bouncy, dancey electronized production and a catchy hook. The sound can be provided by synthlines, House beats, Hip Hop beats, and so on :).

Ahh I see. What do you think was the EDM of the 80s? Dance pop or House? EDM today was like Disco in the 70s, but what about the 80s/90s?

EDM is short for "Electronic Dance Music" which is also just a general term to points out to any dance music made electronically. It appeared in the late 70s when Disco artists started to experiment with the newly available synthesizers (so yeah EDM grew out of Disco). Since then EDM diversified in tons of different genres that falls under its umbrella.

In the 80s, the most popular forms of EDM were called "Garage" (which is House but very close to its original Disco ancestor) and "Hi-NRG" (also very close to Disco, but very heavily synthesized too).

In the 90s, the most mainstream EDM genres were "Hip House" (which is House + Hip Hop) and "Eurodance" in the US, while Europe fully embraced it with genres like "Techno", "Trance", "Drum and Bass", "Breakbeat", ...

The 2010s saw tons of EDM subgenres being popularized in US charts as well this time ("Electro-House" (carried over from the late-2000s), "Dubstep" and "Brostep" in the early-2010s, "Tropical House" in the mid-2010s, "Trap" in the mid-to-late 2010s and "Future Bass" in the late-2010s).
