Subject: Eras of the 80s (Midwest vs Coastal Areas)
Written By: Karioprkaj on 03/21/18 at 4:46 pm
The Midwest have always been known for being a few years behind in fashion, while coastal areas seem to be up to date. Here's my take, while comparing the two areas:
Midwest
1980-1981 (90% 70s, 10% 80s)
1982-1983 (75% 70s, 25% 80s)
1984-1985 (60% 70s, 40% 80s)
1986-1987 (60% 80s, 40% 70s)
1988-1989 (100% 80s)
Coastal Areas
1980-1981 (60% 70s, 40% 80s)
1982-1983 (60% 80s, 40% 70s)
1984-1985 (100% 80s)
1986-1987 (90% 80s, 10% 90s)
1988-1989 (75% 80s, 25% 90s)
Tell me what you guys think.

I'd include Chicago in the "coastal areas" section though since they are a large cosmopolitan city and honestly are the most trendy after New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco in America, and on par with Toronto, Philadelphia, Seattle, Miami, and Washington, DC in terms of trendiness. A city like Baltimore on the other hand is closer to the Midwest in terms of trends, though that city has some isolated trendsetters if you know where to look. Then there are parts of the South were/are even behind the Midwest, and more so in the '80s when there were fewer transplants altering the culture. Much of that '80s country music sounds like watered down pre-psychedelic '60s rock.
In Canada, it's basically Toronto/Vancouver/Montreal vs. the rest, though even the top three cities tend to be slightly behind the US, somewhere in between Coastal Areas and Midwest. Saskatchewan seems to be the biggest laggard.
In the UK, it's London vs. the rest. London is on par with coastal America, while Birmingham and Manchester's trends resemble the American Midwest.
Australia is always behind though, with even the top cities (Sydney/Melbourne) on par with the Midwest, with other cities like Adelaide and Perth even behind those, and you're not kidding that this is basically where "80s artists go to die". A similar situation is true for the Philippines.

I agree with yelimsaxa. What you are saying is a generalization.
