Subject: The fashion

When I look back at the '80s, I don't notice a whole lot of people wearing bright neon/pastel clothing that is associated with that decade. Just a little bit. It seemed like more of a celebrity thing. I do see a lot of old-fashioned and dorky clothes, though. Crazy/messy hairstyles were also very common.

Thoughts?

It was common in the clubs, with scenesters, and in the big cities.

84 to 89 had a bit of bright colors. Not everyone wore super bright spazzy clothes 100% of the time but it wasn't uncommon to see bright colors, either.

Isn't that more like very late 80's/early 90's?? Like 1989 to 1993?

Definitely more mid-late 80's. 1992 and 1993 is when earthy tones started coming back in fashion.

In the 1980's, bright colors were abundant in clothing.  One thing to keep in mind, during the decade the whole "dress for success" theme was in play, so if you look at people at their workplace, what you see is much more subdued; you don't see all those brights.  Bright colors were more appropriate for "play clothes".  As far as actual neon colors (frequently seen associated with spandex), those colors were more prevalent in the later part of the decade, and in particular associated with "active" wear.

I was a little child then (born 86) but I vividly remember ALOT of neon and acid wash in my life between Pre-K and about 2nd grade. I remember my fave outfit was a hot pink tank top, pink and white shorts, trimmed in pink and white dots and white sandals. don't forget the pink bow. There's a pic of me somewhere wearing that standing with my mother. IF I track it down, I'll post it.

That 1981 magazine feels a lot more modern than the 70's but it's not quite 80's yet. Pretty cool!

A good point of reference is to watch shows with a live studio audience, in particular talk shows and The Price Is Right, which IMO is a much more representative example of what was really in. Local newscasts from this era are also a good measure. The celebrities preferred the high-end magazine as seen in Vogue, Elle, or Bazaar as opposed to the more "typical" fashion fanatics who used Glamour, Madmeoiselle (remember that?), or Cosmopolitan as their standard. I prefer the 1983-1985 look the most, as its fun enough to be distinct from the lingering "watered down late '70s" at the start of the decade, but before the hair and jeans became too out of control, such as the crimped hair trend that was huge around 1987/88.

In the early/mid '80s, it was popular was to express one's self getting personalized sayings on a tee shirt.  (Recall that tattoos were not popular then.)  There were tee shirt shops in malls - you could easily pick out a T and then get whatever saying you wanted put on the back (or front).  And folks were thus expressing themselves then.

I attended a "Beatlefest" event in Chicago, for perhaps my third time ('83?).  Beatlefest features a Beatles cover band playing all the faves live for us fans, and a dance floor is set up in close proximity.  Fun!  I was dying to hear the band play a particular Beatles tune but had no way to communicate it.  So I decided to go for it.  I got a plain white oversized T, had "Little Child" emblazoned in large bold red letters on the back, and (I sew) split the T down the front, added red piping to make it a cute "tie front", and donned that over a ribbed tank (it was summer) with a short white (what I'll call a) "cheerleader skirt" and some dance-able summer sandals (or Keds?).  That was my look, and I hopped on the dance floor to see if it would get my song played.  Sadly, it wasn't - but if that wasn't givin' it the ole' college try...  ;)  ;D  :o

If I saw this it may not have caught my attention.  The early 80's was still big for designer jeans (and knock-offs, which I tended to go for).  Not that I wouldn't buy Wrangler jeans, but if I did it would've been somewhere "cheap" like maybe Venture or Zayre (i.e. no "ad" needed).

Normalize? That's exactly how people dressed in the mid-late 80's. ::)

I guess that's because so much of the 00's were spent imitating the 70's that the 10's have moved onto the 80's.

notice in a lot of the ads the women turned around and stared at their butts or that Calvin Klein ad from 1981 with Brooke Shields and when she that line with her legs spread open by saying "nothing comes between Me And My Calvins".

Honestly, I don't remember seeing any stirrup pants in stores until around '87.  Maybe celebrities and their ilk wore them first.  "Regular" people didn't seem to embrace them that fast, at least not around here.

I bought my first couple pairs around '88.  Those first pairs were two sizes bigger than usual - and they actually fit fine (for a "cheap" brand).  It took me a while to figure out what to do with them.  As it turned out, I loved wearing them in winter because they were great with short tie-up boots.  Tall boots, too.  (Here in Chicagoland, boots are a winter staple.)  Thus I ended up getting quite a few of them.  I distinctly remember wearing and purchasing them into the early '90s.  Once I figured out what to do with them, I actually grew semi-fond of the style.  But I never wore them in the summer - they just weren't right with regular shoes.  (At least not to me.)    :)

It was a growth period for "health clubs".  I'd moved out on my own in '87 - my coworker brought in a special deal for a popular club network so a bunch of us joined, and I decided to start doing some cardio.  Luckily they just opened a new location near me.  So I dutifully grabbed my clearance rack workout clothes and cheapo shoes and entered, finding my way to an exercycle.  But I got really miffed.  >:(  This "pack" of girls, with perfect hair, perfect clothes and perfect everything made their way to the front and center of the club, showing off their perfect bodies (they looked a lot like these models).  I decided they weren't there to work out - they just wanted to flirt with and pick up guys.  Alas, they probably succeeded...    :-\\

Yeah, this photo is from 1984 and that's when the second wave of skateboarding popularity (in other words, it's revival) started coming around. 1979-1983 is typically considered the "dark ages" of the sport.

What I've gathered from reading up on this era is skateboarding was pretty much considered dead in the early 80's, at least according to George Powell of Powell Peralta. It wasn't until 1984 that it started coming back.

Do you think Marty McFly helped give skateboarding a boost in 1985?

Also, where is skateboarding today? It doesn't seem nearly as popular as it was from the 80s to the early 2000s or so.

Definitely. Powell Peralta's Bones Brigade Video Show from 1984 is usually cited as skateboarding's first big boost but Marty McFly pushed it even further. The release of Powell's second video Future Primitive, also in 1985, was another huge step for skateboarding. Not only is it's filming style so modern (for it's time) and the video is such an intricate look into the world of skateboarding at the time, it's so significant due to the fact that it's the first, to my knowledge, that features skaters doing modern street tricks such as the ollie.

I have no idea, dude. :P Nowadays you see kids in tight pants posing with their boards but I barely see anyone riding them.

You are correct. In the early-mid 80s and especially in the 70s nobody wore belts. It just wasn't a thing to wear a belt. Or should I say it was a thing not to wear a belt. Of course, in the 70s especially, pants were very tight, so there was no danger of them falling down or anything. Belts just weren't needed.

Yeah, I think during the 70's and up until '83, or '84 at the very latest, jeans (among other clothing) was still pretty tight fitting. By late 84/1985 a lot of cuts changed as everyone started wearing looser 550 jeans and less form fitting t-shirts.

For women, belts aren't always utilitarian - sometimes belts are a fashion statement in themselves.  I guess I can't recall a time when that wasn't true (excluding times before I was cognizant).  What has changed a lot over time is the specific style of women's belts.  And of course, there are always the "utilitarian" style of belts for women, too...

Equally true, though - there usually exist women's garments that don't use belts at all, either tightly fitted or elastic waisted, and I can't recall a time when this wasn't true, either.

In the late 80's I seem to remember a lot of wide banded elastic belts with big buckles.  I had several  ::)

If you were a little girl in the 80s, like me, then you might remember these! My mom would dress me up and put these in my hair.

Some of the things I wore in the 80s

I wore these shoes all the time in the '80s. The jelly shoes were not very comfortable but they looked cute!

I concur, jelly shoes were very much an 80's style trend.  Adults and kids both wore them.  They weren't too durable but they were cheap and reasonably comfy!  What's not to like  :)

No - I had an aversion then to spending that much money  :o  on "gym clothes".  But I'll repost the memory I mentioned before about these clothes as it's relevant:

The shaggy hair's still pretty 70's but you can see how the shorts started to get a little bit longer and the shirts are worn untucked. It's still a bit in between the decades but I'd say it's a good example of transition.

I don't understand how women pulled that off during the 1980's?  :o

Didn't Jane Fonda pull that off when she was doing her workout videos?

Yes she did, during 1982 and 1983 in her workout videos.

1987 was the year I got my first haircut...EVER. It was kinda like a woman's mullet, but not quite. It was full in the front and long in the back. :D And honestly, it looked adorable! Will try to post a picture if I can. Aren't you all curious to see my 80s hair?!

For women, an "odd" trend (against the backdrop of the other trends) was very lacy, feminine blouses, such as:

I had several of this type in the early/mid 80's - they were some of my favorites.  :)
