Inspired the '90s and '00s threads of each topic, describe each year of the '80s with a single word, phrase, or sentence. Divide into personal/real life if you can.

1980- John Lennon assassination
1981- Recession
1982- Video arcades
1983- Star Wars (not Return of the Jedi)
1984- Morning in America
1985- Miami Vice
1986- Chernobyl
1987- Yuppies
1988- Glasnost
1989- George H.W. Bush
PERSONAL LIFE
1980-83- Neurons in an unknown place awaiting my salvation
1984- Conception while I kick inside my mom's stomach perhaps while listening to Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A.
1985- Birth
1986- Watching Sesame Street while crawling
1987- Watching Cheers because of the good theme song
1988- Chutes n' Ladders
1989- Playing Nintendo for the first time

Doing real world only, since I wasn't yet born in the 1980s, much to my displeasure:
1980 - Pac-Man and Miracle on Ice
1981 - Donkey Kong Arcade and "Government is the problem"
1982 - E.T. and synthpop
1983 - Thriller, Total Eclipse of the Heart, and Star Wars (both ROTJ and SDI)
1984 - Purple Rain, Terminator, Born in the U.S.A., and Ghostbusters
1985 - Back to the Future and Super Mario Bros.
1986 - Likable commercialism, Chernobyl, and Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster
1987 - Yuppies, Iran-Contra, and hair metal
1988 - New-jack swing, Die Hard, and the Nintendo Entertainment System
1989 - Fall of the Berlin Wall, The Little Mermaid, and New Kids on the Block

1981: Donkey Kong
1982: What else is there to say about this?
1983: Same with 1982.
1984: Nightmare on Elm Street
1985: NES, Care Bears hype
1986: Miracle Mets, Full House
1987: Nothing special happened.
1988: Child's Play
1989: Game Boy, Sega Genesis

1986 - Top Gun, the greatest movie of all time
1987 - Iran
1988 - Bush Sr.
1989 - Batman

1982 - Visiting Japan
1983 - Sister born
1984 - Moving to Atlanta
1985 - Visiting Japan; Road trip to the Carolinas
1986 - First time in Savannah
1987 - Visiting Japan with family
1988 - Road trip to California
1989 - Visiting Japan again, last time seeing my grandfather (see 1990 in the 90's version); Road trip to the Midwest; Good movies in the summer

I'll put 1989 as the year I officially became a Catholic in January of that year. Baptism!

1980: I don't remember anything from this year. I was born, and that was it.
1981: A really strange looking insect scared me....I think a queen ant. Stayed in my memory forever.
1982: Went to my very first carnival.
1983: Complete block.
1984: My sister was born!
1985: I started getting into VH1 and MTV...yes at only 4 or 5 years old! Started Kindergarten.
1986: Graduated Kindergarten
1987: Left my hometown for good :\'(
1988: Moved to Providence
1989: Moved a round a lot with my family.
