Subject: '80s PC Games
Written By: yelimsexa on 07/01/15 at 6:36 am
While there has been a thread previously for the '90s, the '80s were just as important in terms of PC gaming online, so much that in the middle of the decade it was the center of electronic gaming attention after the Video Game Crash of 1983 and prior to the rise of the NES. Of course, this was known for using floppy disks (remember those?) and command prompts such as DOS to start each game, with graphics ranging from monochrome (usually black/white, black/green, or white/blue), to later in the decade only a few colors, usually a combo of Cyan/Magenta/Yellow/Black/White for IBM/PC clones, known as "CGA" graphics, or blue/orange/magenta/green/black/white on some later Apple II PCs. Even though it was the early '90s at the time, I remember playing lots of different Apple educational games, many by the company MECC. Of course The Oregon Trail is the most popular, followed by Number Munchers and Word Munchers. Other titles that were popular were F-15 Strike Eagle, Karateka, Beachhead, Summer Games and Winter Games (at least it wasn't horrible like some other ports like on the NES), Zork I, the chess version known as Sargon, the Exodus series, the Ultima series RPG, Math Blaster, a Music Construction Set, and much more. Of course many of these games are available online on sites such as the Internet Archive and you'll appreciate how much people had to think back then just to get primitive graphics. Around the time the '80s ended, there was quite a boom in graphics and storage capibility, and that continued through the '90s and into the '00s as games got more and more sophisticated.
We had a similar thread on this subject back in 2004, but that was before the rise of online video sites, so please feel free to posts videos of your favorite '80s PC games!

Fixed that for you. (you have to remove the "s" from "https" and just leave http in the URL then it works)
And yes, I loved that game too on my C64. :)

Haha, yes it was highly pixelated and not in colour but we had the game. Not even sure my Mum knew we had it. And I don't think we knew how to play it properly either. ;D
