Subject: 80's Rap

This is where you can post your favorite old school funky rap jam from 1980-1989 and that kind of rap was better cause it had nothing to do with doing drugs and having sex with hot women, it was all about partying and just having fun.

The first rap song I ever heard was Grandmaster Flash's "The Message".
I was at A&A Records in the mall circa '84 and they played it in the store. I thought, 'Who's doing this? This is really good!'
A year later I saw this video and it blew my mind...

My friends in Grade 8 were all big fans of Late Night With David Letterman. One of them said "Larry 'Bud' Melman is in a music video now. The Run-DMC video."
I said, "Oh yeah! King of Rock! I saw that! That was AWESOME!"
Then he said, "You actually LIKED that? I thought it was terrible."
"No it wasn't! It was awesome!"

I'll admit that I like some of the rap from the '80s. Beyond that period, it has become trash.
One of my favorites (still lol):

So, "not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good?"
(It's tricky of me to suggest that you missed the obvious answer. Neither you could have used that line because that line wouldn't be recorded for another year, 1986's Raising Hell gave you Peter Piper. I know, I know, I talk too much, it's not funny, and it's like that, because that's the way it is.)

Holiday Rap by MC Miker G and Deejay Sven. Now we're talking. That was always one of my favourites!
Here is another favourite of mine from 1988 called Stutter Rap (No Sleep 'Til Bedtime) by Morris Minor and the Majors. It is a British comic parody of the Beastie Boys' song No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn. I have learned over the years that it comes to quite a surprise to many of our British friends that not only was this song a hit in the UK, it also was a hit in Australia and Canada. What surprises me is how it was a hit here and not in the US. The Americans have always loved the rap genre way more than Canada and it is still like that to this day!
Look for John Deacon (Queen) in the video ...

I am by no means a rap fan, but I've always thought it worked well when paired with a dance beat. This one, that needs no introduction, is one that even the non rap fan can enjoy and is also one that tops my list of greatest rap songs of the decade. It just doesn't get any better than this ...

Yeah, that's a good one. I'm not really a rap fan either, but I will listen to that song (and a few other "early" rap hits).

There was also Tone-Loc, who became popular at the end of the decade, with hits such as "Funky Cold Medina", and "Wild Thing" (this one later parodied by Weird Al as "Isle Thing", about a girlfriend who introduces the narrator to the TV show Gilligan's Island; the fourth verse even mentions "Funky cold medina").
In the 1990s, Tone Loc went into acting; he would star in several movies.

(Okay, tongue-in-cheek examples (I hope!), but this was sadly serious...
Salt 'N Pepa - Push It (1988)
Nnggh! Never really quite got along with this, perhaps it was my age...but acres better than the way in which they desecrated 'Twist And Shout'! 8-P
Of course, certain people should have known better...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvtzHxr-7g8
(You find another 'rap' example with harpsichord, the word 'curry' and Lulu in the video!)

I admit that the 80s is the best era for rap music because at that time it wasn't about how many half-naked bimbos you could stuff in front of the camera. Rap music back then had a story to tell.
For example....

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five-The Message

Public Enemy-Don't Believe The Hype

It's just a shame in 2014 that you don't have rap with a message anymore.
