Subject: Military/punk/biker-inspired fashion ca. 1989

Written By: MarkMc1990 on 07/27/14 at 3:41 pm

I noticed around 1989-1990 it was popular, especially for women, to adopt this style that was kind of like a hybrid of military and punk/biker gang chic, consisting of leather jackets and military caps. See examples below...

Note the hat Paula Abdul and some of the other dancers wear in the "Forever Your Girl" video (1989)

She also wears a similar one in the video for "Cold Hearted Snake" (1989)

Janet Jackson popularized this style during the Rhythm Nation 1814 era (1989)

Vanessa Huxtable's friend Cara dons this style in a 1990 episode of The Cosby Show (the one where Vanessa and her friends sneak to a concert in Baltimore and Claire goes apesheesh ;D)

In the same episode, this random character wears one too

The lead actress in Child's Play 2 (1990) also wore it

Was there a name for this kind of style?

It's probably just called "Biker Chic". This style actually came back about 4-5 years ago and it's still around.

It's definitely a 1950s biker / rocker / greaser look, especially with the white t-shirt underneath.

Reminds me of UK group the London Boys who were popular in 1989...  8-P

It must've been from the 1950's or 1960's? ???

From "The Wild One", the 1953 American outlaw biker film directed by László Benedek and produced by Stanley Kramer. It is famed for Marlon Brando's iconic portrayal of the gang leader Johnny Strabler.
