Subject: When would you say was the end of the classic 80's?
Written By: SiderealDreams on 06/06/14 at 12:37 am
Looking here at this page (http://www.bobborst.com/popculture/top-100-songs-of-the-year/) I can see that something was clearly different by 1989. However, even as late as 1988, while there were certainly more R 'n' B-type acts, for example, along with other acts that were not really part of the musical repertoire associated with the classic 80's, synthpop and glam metal still show a notable presence.
Now, I know that to determine whether a year represents the classic culture of a decade, we would need to look at more than just music, though I think it is certainly one of the most important criteria. I am less well-versed with film or TV shows; that said, I think that film and TV tend to change less rapidly than music, since the creative work for them is usually done by people a bit older than the popular musicians of a given period, and thus would be a little bit less up to date on current trends.
Nor am I well versed in fashion. When did big hair and other contemporary trends (both mainstream and underground) start to fade?
With respect to politics, well, in the case of the US, Reagan was president until January of 1989. His British counterpart, Margaret Thatcher, was PM until November of 1990.
So, considering all these factors (among others), when would you say was the end of the classic 80's?

The big question is... what is 'classic 80s'... ?
Every year of the 80s was different, but every year had it's own '80s feeling'... as well as years like 1979 or 1991.

no the real question is... who says the classic 80s are over?
I mean.... the original 80s are WAY over... like by 30 yrs or so (I suck at math) but the classic 80s....isn't that ongoing? I mean watch the Goldbergs for crap's sake... the classic 80s are alive and well in 2014!!!!

When it came to shifts in the National mood, either when America trounced Iraq in the Persian Gulf War, or when H.Ross Perot defeated Big George, and Slick Willie entered the White House. I would still like to know, was it when Grunge sucked all the fun out of popular music, or when they started making addiction-chic films like Rush and Leaving Las Vegas, did we officially lose the War On Drugs?

It all depends how you viewed that 80s, or what you considered what "the 80s", or even what music, clothing, TV shows you liked, etc..
There is no right or wrong answer.

There definitely still were very 80's things that year. Check out this video from that year, with its post-apocalyptic atmosphere and Patricia Morrison's crazy hair (Eldritch's hair isn't so un-80's itself).

The undercurrent of tension that fueled the 80's was what drove most of the Western World to get out there, educate yourself, find a good job, make all the cash you could, and spend it on what(and who) you wanted. That tension was created decades earlier by THE COLD WAR, and while the three decades before it were spent fighting for civil rights, trying to end a useless war, and struggling to survive inflation & the oil crunch, by the 80's, despite our constant fear of nuclear annihilation, we were all free to get educated, employed, and successful. So basically, we all wanted to experience everything we could in the world before the bombs fell.
But in November 1989, the fall of the Berlin Wall signaled that the Eastern Bloc was breaking apart, and most fear of nuclear war was soon to vanish(along with the Soviet Union), and with it the tension that drove many of us to 'get out there and live'(hence the 'slacker' generation), although it was kept alive for a good two years after because of the Persian Gulf War and the failed Communist Coup in Moscow. Therefore, it can be argued that the classic 80's vibe ended on January 1, 1992, when Presidents George Bush and Boris Yeltsin signed the accords declaring The Cold War was officially over.

82-89 is classic 80s. I always can't understand why people think that 1989 was 90s like. I mean - maybe it was similar to the early 90s (which is normal), but 1989 had nothing to do with mid and late 90s culture.

Maybe the OP said "classic 80s" because they think there is a difference between "80s" and "classic 80s".
I don't know.
Can someone who didn't live through the 80s ..have an opinion of what the 80s or classic 80s were like? Just asking. No offense intended.

Everyone always associates the middle of a decade the most strongly with it. 1983-86 are probably the only years where nothing could easily be mistaken for the 70s or for the 90s.
I mean, in 1982 you still had bands like America and Crosby, Stills & Nash with top 10 hits and by 1987 you had U2 and R.E.M with top 10 singles.

Should it be "mid 80s" or "mid-80s"?
When discussing temperatures or decades, should it be hyphenated?
I understood that two-word adjectives need to be hyphenated, but why does MS Word think this should be, too?

My entire range of classic tv on dvd ends abruptly at any show (or seasons of a show) that are from 1988 onwards. I may have the odd one or two from 1988 but that is rare. To me by 1988, the 80s that was my childhood had definitely changed and I wasn't feeling the vibe.

I consider hair metal big time 80's and it was everywhere in the late 80's.
There were a good amount precursor 90's stuff floating around in the late 80's, but for the most part, things were still very 80's.

I was born in 1989, so perhaps my opinion means nothing. But I grew up on a lot of 80s stuff due to my parents, who were in high school and their 20s in the 80s. I always felt like the late 80s had a more "modern" feel to it. A year like 1984 felt very distinctive, but a year like 1988, with computers becoming more commonplace (even if they were super primitive) and Hip-Hop making it into the mainstream, felt a lot closer to "today", at least when I was younger. So I'd say the so-called Classic 80s ended around then.
By way of comparison, I'd pin 1983 and 1984 as the most "Classic 80s", at least when it comes to my image of the period.

I don't agree, when I saw pictures and videos from the late 80s I was surprised by how quiet it was. They were still more flamboyant than the very 70s-like early 80s, but not as colorful or as ridiculous as the mid-80s. Look up Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" video and you can see the hairstyles and fashion are still 80s, but not overly so. They're tamer, more neutral. They aren't stereotypical 80s clothes. It's weird because I always used to think the late 80s were the most ridiculous, corny 80s era, but I was wrong. Overall, the late 80s just looked and sounded "90s".

To me, the music died in the summer of 1986. Prior to that it was all good, cool and froody, then I went in the Army for a month. For some reason that changed my entire outlook on music. Johnny Hates Jazz. The Blow Monkeys. The Cutting Crew. Double. All those groups kind of ruined a good run for me, which started in 1981 and ended in June 1986. Even the good old standbys like Duran Duran and The Go Go's and The Cure and The Police seemed to lose something for me after I got home on a medical discharge. To be honest, it probably started to die in late '85. I just didn't notice.

I'd say late 1982 to early 1987 was the heart of the eighties. I'm more familiar with music (and to a lesser extent movies and TV), but I'd say when R&B and new jack swing started being big on the charts instead of the really melodic synthpop and guitar rock, that was the beginning of what would become the 90s.
Fashion and hairstyles are harder to be exact on, since lots of people hang onto styles they like a few years later anyway. :)
