Subject: Do you like Steve Barron's music videos?
Written By: erik on 05/22/14 at 2:04 am
I like most of them. In fact some of the videos he directed are part of my all time favorite music videos like Billie Jean (MJ), Burning Up (Madonna), Rosanna (Toto), Run to You, Summer of '69 (Bryan Adams), Money For Nothing (Dire Straits). It seems like he liked doing nigh-themed videos as most of these were set during nighttime. And the Burning Up video was way better than Lucky Star, although it failed to get big.
I'm not mentioning his most popular video - Take On Me as I like the former ones slightly better (I guess I don't like Take On Me as a song). Any fans of Steve Barron's 80's music video here? Do you like them? I wish they made similar music videos today. :)

One of the sad things about music videos as an art form was that viewers rarely, if ever, got to discover who directed them, at least not by watching MTV. It'd be like watching Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., and Jaws and thinking of them all as John Williams videos. Well, yes, they all had great soundtracks, but the director also gets some credit...

I like it too. It was one of the very first music videos I ever saw (Billie Jean was another). It was like four videos rolled in one and as a kid I didn't connect the parts, I thought the animated part of the video was some real cartoon. :) It had two videos-within-a-video, one featuring a Hungarian band and the other with the hot girl prancing around in lingerie. The other two 'videos' were the actual Dire Straits performing and the animated cartoon. In fact, until seeing the video again as a teen in the 00's I only remembered the cartoon, and the two fake videos with the Hungarian boy band and the girl. For some reason I have forgotten the Dire Straits scenes. :P

Yes, I do like Steve Barron's pop videos and never realised this from the director of Mike Bassett: England Manager in 2001.

Although not directly related to the video, I read that the unedited version of the song was not allowed to be aired in Canada(Knopfler even changed the lyrics slightly on the verse when playing it live).

I liked his video for 'Maid of Orleans' by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. The song was OMD's first chart appearance in Canada (where it reached the Top 40), so the video was shown quite a bit here.

Steve Barron also directed the 1984 film 'Electric Dreams' which I really enjoyed. My favourite scene from it ...
