"Living In Oblivion" Anything Box from 1989 sounds early 80's new wave
"At This Moment" by Billy Vera & The Beaters from 1987, though was recorded in the early 1980's

A borderline example (more like, a late 80's song that sounds mid 80's), but I don't think that (Clan of) Xymox's "Imagination" from 1989 would have sounded out of place four or five years earlier. I also don't think that the video contains anything so characteristic of the very late 80's that it would have been unthinkable a few years earlier. Then again, I wasn't alive then, so maybe I'm wrong. What do you think?

This song already has these 'polished' late 80s synths, but I would definetly sort it into 1987 or so.

That makes sense to me. On the other hand, I think Xymox in general had a fairly polished sound, but I would agree that there is a sort of 'brighter' sound to the synths in this song than in their earlier work. When you say 'polished', are you talking about the riffs, the technical sound, or both?
Also, what about the aesthetics? Do they seem very 1989 or could they be from before?

Also, would you agree that in contrast, the video seems transitional between the 80's and 90's?

Yeah, it sounds close to Holiday or Borderline which came out in 1983. Madonna's other stuff on that album could easily pass as '90s songs.

Can't think of any specific singles which sound similar, but it definitely has an early Depeche Mode or Human League synthpop era sound to it which kind of stands out because 1988 was a few years removed from that.
Video looks pretty of its time to me, though.

Now when you're mentioning this -> you're right. Could be from 1983-86, too.
This is my favorite song from the 1989 album - because it's still 'classic 80s like'.

The aethetics of the video seem very 80s to me. 1984 or 1985 would fit here, too.

Agreed. The singer, Anka Wolbert, seems to have an Annie Lennox vibe in this video, and Annie was very much an icon of the earlier 80's.
From the Wikipedia article for the album from which this song comes (called Twist of Shadows):
The Great Indie Discography found the album "decidedly dated...stuck in a mid-80s groove"
Granted, that review was written in 2003, but it was written by people who know a lot about music.

I think this song is pretty typical of the late '80s sound, the breakbeats, the synclavier voice bass, ect, it sounds like late '80s freestyle actually.

Yeah. There was this genre in the late '80s which had new-wavey vocals yet had dancey beats which sound early '90s.

Though I like a LOT of music from this decade, the end with the New Jack Swing happening really appeals to me. I love that kind of music. I hate it fell out of fashion though, it was neat to me.

I agree that it's got an updated production, but it's undeniably out of place for late 1980s hit songs. 1988 was a time where the New Wave influence was fading rapidly.

Instrumentalisation is 70s (except for ~2:00-2:15), vocals more 80s.

Yeah, I would say 1979 would be the earliest. My original guess was that it came out in 1981, even '83 seems a little late for that kind of music.

It's from 1983.
BTW, it was from a band who hadn't had a new song since 1976. That's probably why it sounds so old.

I can kind of see that, although the instrumentation is noticeably different from music in 1984. It just sounds more modernised, I'm not sure how to describe it.

Maybe. If you took out the 80s style beat and made it sound more like traditional latin music, it could sound more timeless.

I guess that's the way it sounded, more of a fast latin beat.
