Subject: Country Music - The 80s
Written By: whistledog on 09/24/13 at 8:48 pm
I'm pretty sure this topic exists, but I am lazy to look, so why not get a fresh perspective.
I am not a fan of all country music, but I do enjoy the little country ditty here and there, and the 80s had quite a few that I liked.

Although it did have a hardcore following, country music meant diddley squat to us over the ocean...
So much so, that out of the countless #1 country hits from that entire decade, just two (!) sold enough copies to get into our upper circle!
Funnily enough, both Kenny Rogers songs -'Coward Of The County' (#1 - 1980) and 'Islands In The Stream' (with Dolly Parton - #7 - 1983)

That is strange how Country Music never took off in the UK. Here are a trio of hits by American country artists that you would recognize in the song itself ...
Crystal Gayle - Turning Away (1984)
A UK #15 hit for Shakin' Stevens in 1986

Sylvia - Cry Just A Little Bit (1985)
Originally a UK #3 hit for Shakin' Stevens in 1983

Eddy Raven - A Letter to You (1989)
Originally a UK #10 for Shakin' Stevens in 1984

Now why couldn't Shaky have had that kind of success in North America :-\\

Probably the same reason why country music has never really become big here - that cultural divide thing, I guess...
Mind you, I'd probably have a good laugh seeing Mr. Stevens in a stetson and a rhinestone suit!

The cultural divide is just not overseas, its within North America itself. Generally, liberal urban areas see country music as "too hillbilly, backwoods, bland, and repetitive" whereas the more conservative areas (the "red states/counties") provide the lion's share of the promotion. Within the '80s itself, in the early part of the decade, the movie Urban Cowboy allowed country music to penetrate deeper into blue state America and allow the numerous crossovers. This was the "yacht country" period with your Oak Ridge Boys, Ronnie Milsap, Willie Nelson, Eddie Rabbitt, Anne Murray, Alabama, and of course leading the charge Kenny Rogers. But once Michael Jackson arrived along with the second British Invasion, country music quickly regressed to its traditional enviornment and even country fans started feeling that the performers were getting washed out with bland tunes. Thankfully toward the end of the '80s a new wave of country artists gave new life to the genre via the New Traditonalist movement, such as Reba McEntire, Randy Travis, k.d. Lang, George Strait, and Alan Jackson. Despite this improvement in quality, these songs never crossed over into "blue state America".

Him in a suit like that would certainly bring truth to his song What Do You Wanna Make Those Eyes at Me For :D

That looks like the 1968 version he originally did, but you are correct that it was also an 80s song. The 1981 Remix was #1 on the Country Charts across North America and even made the US Top 40. Good tune!

Rosanne Cash-Hold On. 1986. Made it to #5 on the Billboard Country chart and stayed on the chart for 22 weeks!
For the classic country listener, when I lived near St. Louis I would listen to KWRE 730 AM out of Warrenton.

I discovered Crystal Gayle through this tv appearance with Andy Gibb. This is a medley of two of her hits which I love... one being from 1980, thus making it eligible for this thread.

My other contribution is Reba McEntire's 1986 hit "Whoever's in New England". The video is a great slice of suburban 80s'ness.

Whoever's in New England was my first real introduction to country, and made me love it. Love that song.
