Subject: 1982: The Year in Music

Written By: whistledog on 09/04/13 at 6:31 pm

1982 was one of my favourite years for music.  So many great songs, artists, musical achievements.  What were your favourite songs, artists, moments in music, etc from 1982?

Here are some highlights ...

March 6, 1982 - Maid of Orleans (The Waltz of Joan of Arc), the 7th single by British group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark becomes the group's breakthrough single this side of the Atlantic, rising to an eventual peak of #32 in Canada.  It was the 3rd and final single from their 1981 released album Architecture & Morality

July 15, 1982 - The British/American duo America release their 10th album titled View From the Ground.  The lead single You Can Do Magic reached #8 in the US and #37 in Canada, giving them their first North American Top 40 hit since Today's the Day in 1976.  The song also peaked at #59 in the UK, giving them their first UK singles chart entry since Ventura Highway in 1972.  The album also featured a cover of the Ian Thomas song Right Before Your Eyes which reached US #45

I really liked You Can Do Magic. It was a great song for America...

There was quite a mix around that time of the decade. You still had bands like America. Toto, Steve Miller Band, Hall & Oates etc making hits.  Toni Basil's 'Mickey' was big around that time... as was J Geils - Centrefold. Meanwhile across the ditch (in the UK) the big 980's bands like Madness, Duran Duran Culture Club were carving it up.

I remember Dexy's Midnight Runners had the hit 'C'Mon Eileen, Culture Club had 'Do You Really Want To Hurt Me'.

July 1982 - Paul Davis scores his last ever hit in the US Hot 100 at #40 with a fantastic cover of Love or Let Me Be Lonely, originally made famous in 1970 by Friends of Distinction.  Paul sadly passed away in 2008

May 8, 1982 - The Irish rock band Rosetta Stone, led by former Bay City Rollers guitarist Ian Mitchell, peak at #46 in Canada with their cover of Hiding From Love.  This charted higher than the 1980 original by Bryan Adams (which only made it to #64 in Canada) and can be heard in the 1983 film Class.  One of my favourite cover songs of all time!

Centerfold was indeed massive.  Even today, I hear it quite a bit on classic radio, you'd think it was still in the charts.  The J. Geils Band were popular in the 70s as well as the early 80s, but to me, Centerfold and the whole Freeze Frame album it was from was their greatest piece of work!

Some good choices already in this thread.
I'd like to add "Africa" and "I won't hold you back" from Toto IV, "Gypsy" and "Hold me" from Fleetwood Mac,  "Only time will tell" from Asia, "You can't hurry love" Phil Collins.

Subdivisions by Rush was really good. "Letting go" by Straight lines was really good too.

What might be my favorite song from 1982 is this one:

This was a great song by The Gap Band. They had a lot of good hits around this time. Robert Wilson passed away 3 years ago at the age of 53. :\'(

March 20, 1982 - Kasim Sulton (the bass player for Todd Rundgren's Utopia) reached #34 in Canada with the song Don't Break My Heart.  It was from his 1982 solo album Kasim which I have on vinyl.  One of my favourite songs of 1982.  The sax solo is fantastic!

October 1982 - Journey frontman Steve Perry has his first solo hit in a duet with Kenny Loggins on the song Don't Fight It.  It peaked at #17 in the US and #7 in Canada and is from Kenny's 1982 album High Adventure

Personally, I could sit through most of them with a happy smile of recognition on my face, except #4 (ugh!), #10 (sorry, that's not the Chicago I loved!) and the bottom four, which were just background noise!  :-[

Just for balance, here's what the British people willingly paid good money for...

  1-COME ON EILEEN-DEXY'S MIDNIGHT RUNNERS-AUGUST
  2-EYE OF THE TIGER-Survivor-SEPTEMBER

  19-Love Plus One-Haircut 100-March

Ahem! I'll draw a discreet veil over #4, #6, #10, #11 and #14 - they weren't that good even then!

(#14 has a double claim to shame as it was covered in the US by Barry Manilow! Aaaaaarrrrgh!)

(And yes, 'Fame' really did take the best part of two years to repeat its US success! This was mainly down to the success of the TV show...)

There are a few on that list I have never even heard of. Wow.
Yeah, I never likes Ebony & Ivory or any of Paul's 80s duos. They are... ugh.
2 Culture Club songs?  :o  I was never a fan of anything they did.

I guess just like me you really liked Chicago's 70s music. Their 70s hits were just fabulous.

Oh Julie was one of the few songs that Shaky himself wrote, and though it was not a hit at all in North America, the version by Barry Manilow (released the same year) made the Top 40.  Always thought that was strange.  Of those 20 songs, 12 of them reached the Top 40 in North America, but 1 was different:  I Don't Wanna Dance reached the Canadian Top 10, but never made it into the US Top 40; It Must Be Love, which made the US Top 40, never charted in Canada

Not really anything strange about it - Barry was big in Britain at the time whereas Shaky meant nothing in the US. So, being the charitable soul that he was, Bazza decided to have a crack at stealing Shaky's chance of glory - not that it amounted to much!

Obviously, Barry's version was never released as a single in Britain - but I wonder if he's embarrassed by it. It never crops up on any of his compilations and I'm not 100% sure it's ever seen a CD release!

It does appear on a UK version of his 1982 album Here Comes the Night, atleast the one I found on cassette, but it is not on the North American release.  I do know it has never been released on an officoal Barry Manilow greatest hits album.

Barry's version of "Oh Julie" is to the 80s what Elton John's "Ego" was ato the 70s.  A Top 40 hit (just barely) by a well-known artist that never shows up on the artist's albums and is not a widely remembered song

Of all those songs, I think The Look of Love by ABC is my favourite.  I have wonderful memories of that song.  ABC were, are and will always be my favourite British band of the 80s!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMbNYjZWMn0

The Look of Love was ABC's first single release in North America (Their first single overall was 'Tears Are Not Enough' in 1981, but it was not released here).  On November 14, 1982, it hit #1 in Canada, and making them the 4th act of the 80s to have their first single reach #1 in Canada.  Who were the first three? ...

Sugarhill Gang (Rapper's Delight) - January 26, 1980
B-52s (Rock Lobster) - May 24, 1980
Stars on 45 (Medley I) - June 6, 1981

Here is what the record buying public in Canada said the Top 100 songs of 1982 were ...

Nice list!

My fave on there is "Hard to say I'm sorry", or "Letting go"

Least favorite for me? Either "da da da" by Trio or "This girl is mine" by Paul and Jacko

I was quite surprised to see Letting Go made the year end Top 100.  It was a big hit, the biggest of all 3 hits they charted, but I guess it's because it's somewhat obscure today

It was a hit. It's one of the best Canadian songs from the 1980s, I think.

Spring 1982 - I dragged my mom to every record store in town searching for the #1 single - "I Love Rock 'n Roll" by Joan Jett. I thought, 'If no store has it, I'll just get the #2 single - "We Got The Beat" by the Go-Go's.'

Every record store had sold out of both of them.  :\'(

I finally begged my mom at the record dept in Woolco to buy me the Joan Jett full-length album.

Some 7" singles I did get: Buckner & Garcia's "Pac Man Fever", Aldo Nova's "Fantasy", and Rick Springfield's "Don't Talk To Strangers"

1982 was also the Year of Metal. I remember the radio DJ saying, "Iron Maiden have a new album out, it's called The Number of the Beast. We'll play something off that next."

I thought, 'It's that band with the cool album cover art! I wonder what they sound like?' The song they played was "Children of the Damned".

I became a 10 year-old metalhead. Mom bought me my first denim jacket at Target. I collected all these heavy metal badges at the local t-shirt shop. I still have a few of them.

I saw my first concert in the Fall of 1982 - April Wine on the Power Play tour with Streetheart opening. Mom went with me. I wore the denim jacket for the occasion. 8)

Christmas 1982 - I got Ozzy's Speak of the Devil, Van Halen's Diver Down, Motorhead's Iron Fist, and Uriah Heep's Abominog!  :)

Obviously, due to the time lapse, our North American friends will always regard 'Don't You Want Me' as a 1982 hit, but for us in Britain it hit big over the festive period the previous year - it still reminds me of walking to school in bitterly cold winds and snow!

Unusually, it was their biggest hit off the 'Dare' LP. Unusual, as it was the fourth single to be lifted off of it! Normally, the first couple of singles sell well, everybody buys the album and the next singles tail off - this one didn't! It became their biggest UK seller!

And was there any particular reason why this classic made a re-appearance that year?  ???

Split Enz was a good band and I was able to have the Albums "Waiata" and "True Colours", and I had the single of "Six Months in A Leaky Boat". Good band.

AC/DC (Australian band) had this one from early 1982.

Here's one that no one has heard of, well atleast not the artist or this version of the song in question ...

Nighthawk - Eye of the Tiger
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_ZMZw63npI

It's a disco/funk version of the Survivor song of the same name.  It never charted in the US or Canada.  The only thing I know about Nighthawk was that they are a Canadian band group under the Quality Records label.  Something tells me though it was strictly just a one off project of studio musicians.  It would be super awesome if this band took their name from the 1981 Sylvester Stallone film Night Hawks

This was the year that British guitarist Mike Oldfield released the album Five Miles Out.  One of the songs from this album was called Family Man and was sung by Maggie Reilly.  Though it missed the UK Top 40 by 5 spots, it found a place in the Canadian Top 30.

Oddly enough the album and single both peaked at #29 in Canada.

In 1982, Australian group Icehouse released their 2nd album titled Primitive Man and gave them their first chart success in North America where it reached #129 in the US and #59 in Canada.  It also reached #59 in Canada and though it produced no mainstream hits in North America, 2 singles from it charted in the UK.  I always liked this one ...

One of the backroom 'everymen' who played on a hell of a lot of other folks' songs, but never really got the full recognition he deserved.

This never charted here, but it was included on a whole stack of compilation LP's, so it must have shifted a few copies one way or the other!

Here he is again, playing guitar on the Pretenders' comeback hit from that year...

It was a great song. Unfortunately, most rock fans only remember this song from the album. Lionel Richie had the title and melody, then they collaborated on the lyrics. This was the first time they ever performed it as a duet: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc8IN-FnRic (has to be copied & pasted, I'm afraid.)

"I've Never Been to Me" is the title of a ballad, written and composed by Ron Miller and Kenneth Hirsch, which is best known via a recording by American pop singer Charlene. Its original release in 1977 barely registered on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, but its re-release in 1982 hit #3 and earned her a Gold certification in Australia. In addition, the song topped the charts in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Enter the spoiler for this song is at your own risk, you have been warned.

"Ebony and Ivory" is a 1982 number-one single by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. The song gave McCartney his 24th US No.1 as a songwriter. The title was inspired by McCartney hearing Spike Milligan say "black notes, white notes, and you need to play the two to make harmony folks!". It was later named as the tenth worst song of all time by Blender magazine and in 2007 was named the worst duet in history by BBC 6 Music listeners.

It was performed by 17-year-old German high-school student Nicole, resulting in Germany's first win at the Eurovision Song Contest by a record margin of 61 points, setting a new record for the largest winning margin that lasted until the Eurovision Song Contest 1997. Nicole's single is still the only Eurovision entry to top the sales charts in every territory it was released in.

It was rereleased as the album's seventh and final single on January 23, 1984. The song is a mix of disco and funk. Songwriter Rod Temperton wanted to write a theatrical song to suit Jackson's love of film. The music and lyrics evoke horror films, with sound effects such as thunder, footsteps and wind. Yes! The album was released in 1982, although several of its tracks didn’t become hits until at least the following year. But it was still one of the best-selling albums in pop music history. O0
