Subject: Was Mtv popular right away?

A lot of us know it began August 1, 1981. But did the hoopla begin right away?

It was a big success with its demographic -- white suburban kids with cable subscriptions. Maybe a fifth of all households had cable TV in August of 1981.

That's not bad! Yes, I also heard there were few colored artists on there when it began.

Now MTV and to a lesser extent Much Music, which premiered on August 31, 1984, are former shells of themselves. I haven't been able to watch Much Music since the Bell Media take over. I can't even watch MTV or Much Music anymore because of all of the ridiculous stuff that they have on.
I remember when Much Music couldn't air Ren and Stimpy para CRTC rules because it didn't have anything to do with music. Now Much Music has tonnes of crap that nobody in their right minde would watch.

Yeah no kidding. MTV Canada was airing music videos until about 2007 when Moses Zaimer, who owned Chum-City Limited, and said "hey my channel was airing music videos first." Now I can't watch either channel. :P

But we had Much Music, started in 1984. I use to watch it in the 80s...for some artists.
I think it took off after a year when musicians like Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna started making music.
And I used to change the channel if videos from either of those 3 came on.

What was Much Music? ???
It was Canada's music video channel. It started on August 31, 1984 as a speciality channel along with TSN and First Choice Super Channel, now The Movie Network. It was the same as MTV in that it aired music videos and concert specials and had Video Jockeys. I think that after the Bell Media take over it was a former shell of itself. :P

I always liked J.D. Roberts. I remember back in the 00s, I tuned into CNN and saw American Morning with John Roberts. I was like HOLY SHIIT, IT'S J.D. ROBERTS! He was the host of The New Music with Jeanne Bakker before that show made the move from CityTV to Much Music. I remember seeing an interview on The New Music that J.D. gave with Mike Reno in 1980 and they were in a Laundromat, and you could see the greasy looking owner of the place in the back with a cigar in his mouth looking all confused why this man was being interviewed lol

Not only is that show horrible, it's also extremely depressing (well I feel like it is). But the worst part isn't even that MTV is playing these shows, it's the fact that now a lot of these reality "stars" are becoming tabloid regulars/fodders. It's like even if you don't watch MTV anymore (which is understandable), they are still everywhere on magazine stands and news outlets.
Sorry if this is OT but...ugh 8-P
