Subject: Uncharted Outside of Canada: Kim Mitchell

Written By: whistledog on 07/29/13 at 10:23 pm

Kim Mitchell is a singer/songwriter from Sarnia, Ontario.  He needs no introduction to Canadians of the right age, but for the world outside of Canada, he did not become a big star, despite a major rock hit in the US (thus, the title of this thread is incorrect lol).

He initially got his start as lead singer for the band Max Webster which he co-founded in 1973, and following their demise in 1981, he launched a solo career that propelled him to national stardom in Canada, to where he is now a legend in Canadian music.  Since 2004, he has worked as a radio DJ for Q107 in Toronto.

So many great songs.  Oh, where to begin ...

I'm probably one of the few that like Max Webster better than Rush.  I was a Max Webster fan in the late 1970s.

"High class in borrowed shoes" and "A million vacations" were 2 very popular albums in high school and America really missed out on this band.

A Million Vacations was fantastic!  I still hear Paradise Skies on the radio from time to time.  So much, that you'd think it was a new song out today

Yeah it's a great song. "A Million Vacations" is their signature album.

I am surprised that "Let go the line" only reached #41. It had as much airtime on AM radio as just about any song during that period of time. And "Diamonds, Diamonds" also has airplay on AM the radio, but I guess never made the top 100.

You know what kept it out of the Top 40?  Born to Be Alive by Patrick Hernandez AND (I Only Wanna) Get Up and Dance by The Raes.  That's right, Let Go the Line spent 2 weeks at #41 lol

Now there's a song I could not stand "Born to Be Alive" by Patrick Hernandez. Was on my "top 100 worst songs ever" list I made back in 1982 or 1983. I'm glad Disco eventually died.

1979-1980.  It remained a perpetual dance club hit throughout the early eighties.  I remember rollerskating to it at the roller rink when I was a kid.  I kinda liked the song myself, but I can see how it would bug the sh*t out of somebody who didn't like disco!

I liked some disco, not much. A few songs here and there. I know this song was popular, but this song just hurt my ears...not too many songs at high school were thoroughly hated more than "Born to be alive" ;D

Whistledog mentioned this Max Webster song already, thought I'd post the youtube.

Paradise skies.

What did you hate about it? ???

Why did I hate "Born to be alive?"

Coz it sucks big time! It's noise!  ;D
I despise the beat. Makes me wanna run REALLY FAST to the radio and turn it off.
I'm not a fan of disco Howard. Didn't like the beat.

One of the most popular sayings at our high school was:

I'd say about 80 to 90% of the people in my high school graduating class hated disco, Howard. It's just the way it was.
It doesn't mean disco is bad or terrible, I just didn't like it, personal opinion that's all.
Give me the Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis, Yes, E.L.P, Queen, The Who... and I'm happy.

And there's people who love disco and hate most of the bands I posted above. I'm cool with that. Everyone has different music tastes. :)

I remember hearing "Go For Soda" back in the 80's but I didn't know who sang it and I'd pretty much forgotten all about it until I saw this:

Yep. Thank the Trailer Park Boys for introducing me to Kim Mitchell.  8)

My sister had a sticker on her stereo that said "BURN THE DISCO DOWN!"

Of course, we didn't have a discotheque in our little NH town, unless you count learning "The Hustle" at the K of C.  You had to go to Manchester to find the nearest discotheque or all the way to Boston to find the nearest GOOD discotheque, which itself would only be a pale imitation of Studio 54, which you wouldn't be allowed into anyway.

When I was old enough to go, disco was dead, techno was in.  But it was the same story.  What I didn't like about it was the fashionable exclusivity rather than the music itself.

Was it because Patrick Hernandez repeated "Born" many times? ???
