I'm going to say they were equal.  The horror genre was revamp and there resurrected in the 00s. Mostly because the people who grew up on them in the 80s were finally able to make their own!

Horror before the 1980's are the best one, i.e. "The Exorcist" and "The Omen", but released right on the cusp of 1980 was "The Shining". For me, the Halloween, Elm Street ilk of films are too tacky.

I hear a lot that this certain movie gave the genre a rebirth:

I love The Exorcist!

I think I need to see the Omen. I'm a big horror movie fan!

I hated the exorcist. Except for the crucifix scene I found the film truly boring.

Rosemary's baby also bored me to tears.

It's alive and amityville horror were pretty good but for me horror begins with Halloween.
The more bloodier the better.  ;D

So, you prefer slasher flicks. To me, horror movies & slasher flicks are two different species.

I think of slasher flicks as a subcategory of horror. Not a separate entity all together.
Also there's a difference between horror and thriller.

If they film isn't bloody and violent then it damn well better be really scary. Very few films are effective for me because I can see the end from the beginning. I can see where the director is going to put the "scary" shot. The person jumping from behind things the twist you weren't supposed to see coming. Those don't work on me. At least if the film is violent I have something to keep my attention  ;D

Personally, I don't like violence, blood & gore (and I'm not referring to Al  :D ;D ;D ;D ). So to me, thrillers are more my speed. I also like ghost stories.

Have any titles? I have yet to see what I would call a good ghost story. Maybe the entity. Tho I found it more shocking for other reasons than being an effective horror film.

-Ghost Story with Fred Astaire.
-The Others with Nicole Kidman
-Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis
-The Other (1972 flick-the book was good, too).

You can also say that the Shining is also a ghost story.

Of course my fav is the Ghost & Mrs. Muir but that is a love story not a horror flick.  ;) :D ;D ;D ;D

It was Scream.

Which actually came out in 1996  :P There were several good horror films in that decade as well.  Such as I Know What You Did Last Summer, Wishmaster, Candyman and Species.  As well as some of those franchise's sequels.  I like 80s and 70s best though.

Saw ghost story but I don't remember it.

Hated the others.... I saw the "twist" coming a mile away.

Loved sixth sense (never saw that twist coming) but I never thought of it as a 'horror' film

Don't know if I saw The Other...probably not I may look for it

Loved the ghost & mrs m..... But like you said it's a love story  ;D

1988 was the year horror movies really peaked.

Every week, a new horror movie would hit the multiplex. Being a teenage horror geek, I had to go see all of them....

The Blob
Bad Dreams
Serpent and the Rainbow
Nightmare on Elm St 4: The Dream Master
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
Child's Play
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
They Live
Hellbound: Hellraiser II

Plus video stores were still popular. Some movies I rented in '88...

Scarecrows
The Unnamable
Phantasm II
Pumpkinhead
Demons 2
Slugs: The Movie
Return of the Living Dead Part II
Brain Damage
Prison

Not all of them were good; even the bad ones were still fun though.

I blame my film degree. There are very few movie twists Idont see coming. I'm trying to think of any other films that took me by surprise. Maybe the boy in the stripped pajamas. I saw it coming but not until much later in the film.

I think scream got people talking about horror films again so yeah it gave it a resurgence. They did still make horror films in the 90s they just didn't make a lot of good ones lol  for the record I loved all the scream movies. Even the 3rd one  ;D but 1 & 4 were the best.

I don't really like lumping suspense/thriller films in with horror I think of them as two separate genres. I think horror films and slasher films get treated like they are one in the same. They aren't but should be treated like Siamese twins.  Not all horror films are slasher flicks but all slasher flicks are horror.  ;D

My scariest film moments always will be

The last 20 minutes (or so) of Halloween. From where Laurie discovers the bodies to the closing credits. There's no slashing & little blood at that point and its the scariest thing I've ever seen.

The opening of when a stranger calls w/ carol Kane. The rest if the film is crap but the opening and I believe the ending (if i recall correctly) are pretty solid

And the first half of High Tension. That movie had me in the edge of my seat. The second half of the film sux!

Starting around the late 80s(1989??) the horror genre was 'no longer cool'. This dry spell lasted until about December 1996 with Scream. Although Snoz might not consider Scream a true horror film!  :D

I said this before and get a lot of flack for it but I never considered poltergeist a horror film. I love the movie but it just never read horror to me. Supernatural for sure but not horror.

Children of the corn I loved - it didn't scare me but I loved it- Malachi and Jacob were def twisted!!!

So, on a side note, I was at an event where the dude who played Malachi was. This guy, superman on H'wood blvd (see confessions of a superhero doc and you'll know who I mean) kept yelling Malachi, Malachi can I get your autograph. The dudes in his 40s now and was getting pissed off. I whipped out my iPhone and imdb'd him (Courtney Gaines) as the superman guy yelled again "Malachi!" I yelled "Courtney! Can I get a pic with you???" He came right over to me cuz I knew his name. Lol. No one saw me look it up!

It's on Facebook. Can't remember if I posted it here.

Freddy Kruegar scares me the most out of the 'big three' that is Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Kruegar. Can you imagine not being able to sleep?

Although Michael Myers looks the most scary in my opinion, I think it's his empty and black eyes.

I've told this story before but it was long before you started posting so maybe you never saw it...

I was a freshman in HS. It was Dec 1982 (maybe I was a sophomore and it was Dec 83) at any rate. I had a slumber party for my birthday. My birthday gift was a gift for the family... a VCR!!!! OMG I can watch movies at home!!!! Anyway. My parents bought a VCR and we went to the store and rented The Entity and Madman.

We watched the Entity first then we put on Madman.  It scared my friends and I shytless.. For two weeks after I was looking for madman in my closet and behind doors. Anytime I was outside alone at night I freaked out! Sometimes I would see him at my window.

Fast forward to my Sr yr.  a few of my friends (3 of whom were at my slumber party) were out cruising and really just trying to find someplace to get drunk... but first we needed booze.

One of my friends lived in Prunedale, a smalltown just a few minutes away from Salinas, which is where I lived. Prundale is basically rural.  My friend Pam was driving a big pick up. She had two other friends in the front. My friend Lyn and I were sitting in the bed of the pickup.  we went decided to stop at someone's house (also in Prunedale) Pam and her two friends were going inside to get booze- Lyn and I didn't know anyone in the house so we waited in the truck bed.  It was night, pitch black, we were basically, kind of in the mountains. The nearest neighbor could not be seen. There were trees all around. As Pam closed the door of her truck she looked at me and  lyn and said "Don't let Madman Marz get you"  that was it... that long forgotten, long buried terror crept right up to the surface. I looked at lyn and she had the same terror on her face. We sat back to back watching the trees for any signs of Madman Marz.

I found the dvd years ago and bought it... I never watched- for two reasons. IT IS THE SCARIEST MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN!!! .... and... I'm afraid it really isn't the scariest movie I've ever seen and it won't live up to this memory I have in my head.

Freddy scared me back in the mid-90s when I watched Wes Craven's New Nightmare.

New Nightmare...that was a great flick...freddy comes from the screen into the real world and starts attacking people associated with the film....and didn't he possess Miko Hughes or something?  ;D

His fingers reminded me of Edward Scissorhands.

His fingers reminded me of Edward Scissorhands.

Except he started his rein of terror long before tender hearted Edward came along.

I've just realized that I've never seen Scream. :o Or Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Yet I know the villains of these films.

That's because their great pop culture icons!!!

It's much better than my situation. I have never heard a beiber song but I know who he is....isn't that scary?

I still laugh about the day I first became aware of him. It was the we are the world cover. I watched the video someone posted here and my 1st comment was who is the girl singing in the beginning  ;D  I genuinely had no clue what a beiber was and really thought that he was a girl.  ;D

Sorry to clutter your thread with the beibs but it amuses me so.

I would say the first half because of the late 70s being more prominent in Horror then the early 90s.
