Subject: Uncharted in North America: Black
Written By: whistledog on 06/08/13 at 6:21 pm
Black is the pseudonym of British singer Colin Vearncombe. He struggled in the early-mid 80s with a few unsuccessful singles, but soon came to fame in the late 80s with several songs, most notably the excellent Wonderful Life. He has not had a hit since the early 90s, but still continues to record.
Even though he had no success in North America, I remember hearing Wonderful Life quite a bit on Canadian radio

Black is one of my favorite artists of the 1980s. I own three of his albums ("Wonderful Life", "Comedy" and "Are We Having Fun Yet?"), but by then I felt like he started to repeat himself. It's all doom and gloom, really - hardly anything uplifting. Heck, even "Wonderful Life" sounds gloomy, despite the subject!
Favorite songs include "Wonderful Life" and "Sweetest Smile", as well as these two:
You're A Big Girl Now
(The video is not an actual video for the song. It contains scenes from "La Fille Sur Le Pont"
a 1999 movie starring Vanessa Paradis and Daniel Auteuil)

It appears as though Jason and I are the only two people remembering Black. :(

I never heard of them before. Makes good sense to me since they were uncharted here.

Shame this is. Wonderful Life is in my Top 10 songs of the 80s. I have both Wonderful Life and Comedy albums and I still love them

I just listened to it earlier today. "Wonderful life" is an awesome song. Canadians and Americans missed out on it. I will add it to my list of songs to put on my laptop.

No, no...I remember them/him - it's just that I've been away...
As you say, they/he became stuck in something of a repetitive rut after the two big hits, but I shouldn't worry...he's made more money out of 'Wonderful Life' alone (in various forms of advertising and compilations) to keep him going for years!
