Subject: Uncharted in America: Modern Talking
Written By: whistledog on 03/28/13 at 12:07 am
Modern Talking were a Europop duo from Germany comprised of Thomas Anders (Voice) and Dieter Bohlen (Keyboards). From 1984-1987, they scored several hits throughout Europe before parting ways. Upon re-formation in 1998, they scored another run of European hits until 2003 when they parted ways again.
Through all this success, they failed to reach America, but did manage a few hits in the UK and became a one hit wonder in Canada.
Between their breakup period of 1988-1997, Anders went solo to modest success, and Bohlen formed a new group called Blue System and almost equalled the success of Modern Talking in their native Germany.
Brother Louie was their greatest success ...

They had many good singles, but I will also give a nod to an album only track from 1987 titled It's Christmas. I listen to this one regularly every December (and sometimes when it's not even Christmas time) ...

Brother Louie is from their 3rd album titled Ready For Romance. Though it did reach that peak of #34 in Canada, if you asked the average Canadian if they know of this group, you'd probably get a blank stare.
The album never charted in Canada, and though I've seen it in many used record shops, I've never ever found one that was distributed in Canada. It's always import copies that I find

I've heard of Modern Talking and Brother Louie is a good song.
They are one of those groups that got so much notice for not being popular in America, that people went out to proactively listen

'Brother Louie' was played incessantly across Europe over the summer of 1986...I was holidaying in Corfu at the time and remember the thing following me around like a bad smell...
A few weeks later, when everyone had returned home, what do you think entered our charts? ::)
I guess there must have been a few people wanting to rekindle memories of their hols...

Everybody was listening to Modern Talking in Germany, but nobody wanted to admit it ;D
They actually had some great songs, but unfortunately (?) all sound a bit similar since they seem to be based on the same synths.

Wow, surprised one of their songs reached #34 in 1987 (here). I listened to the radio a lot back then. Gotta say, never heard it before.
