Subject: Did 1980s teens emulate the 1950s or the 1960s?

Like, Hi, Fer Shurr,

I know that the "Happy Days"/ "Grease" phenomenon of the 1970s led to an emulation of the 1950s, but I still can't decide weather or not 1980s teens and college students sought to emulate the 1950s or the 1960s.

I know that during the 1980s, there were shows and movies that were obvious throwbacks to MANY decades (Ie: "Roger Rabbit" represented the late 1940s, "China Beach" represented the 1950s, "Hairspray" and "The New Gidget" represented the 1960s, etc.).

I ALSO know that the "kid culture" of the late 1980s/ early 1990s included throwbacks to both the 1950s and the 1960s (Barbie and The Sensations, and Cool Times Barbie and friends represented the 1950s, while Trolls, and the bright colors of the late 1980s/ early 1990s represented the 1960s).

I wonder if the 1987 "return of the miniskirt" was supposed to be a throwback to about 1966 for teens!  All that I know is the fact that I was so jealous of this one girl during about 1990 or so.  She wore huge, white tee shirts with the shortest, tightest little white "skirts" (They looked more like tube tops) that I had ever seen.  I only got to wear a tube top as a skirt when I was a singer for Halloween during my 5th Grade year, and I forgot my REAL skirt (While I was in the bathroom, preparing to change, I made the exciting discovery that my actual costume skirt was missing, and so I was "forced"...ha ha...to wear the tube top as a skirt...with my regular shirt.)

Anyway, were the teens and the college students of the late 1980s (and maybe even the extremely early 1990s) influenced more by the 1950s, or were they more likely to imitate the styles of the 1960s?
