Subject: Oriental/Asian sounding synths in 80's music

Written By: belmont22 on 10/04/12 at 2:43 pm

Has anyone noticed the new wave bands of the 80's had a fondness for Oriental scales in their music? A lot of 80s synths sound like they could be from Japanese music or something, maybe it's because the Japanese and Germans invented synthpop?

The early 80s was all about Japan, and I don't mean the new wave band of the same name.

There was Yellow Magic Orchestra and their 1980 hit 'Computer Games'.  Reached #17 in the UK and #60 in the US

Then in 1981, late 70s disco duo A Taste of Honey scored a Top 20 hit with an English language translation of Kyu Sakamoto's 1960s classic 'Sukiyaki'.  This version reached #2 in the US and #4 in Canada

The BIG one of the early 80s though was Aneka and her UK #1 hit 'Japanese Boy' in 1981.  This never reached the US Hot 100, but it did peak at #42 in Canada.  Some people call it bad, but I've always had a soft spot for it.

That never reached the UK chart until 1982, so it totally counts.
I was going to post that one, but it doesn't really have an oriental sound to it, but it is still an awesome song!

This band was initially compared to Depeche Mode, but they were more inspired by YMO.  They got the name from a YMO song.

Some people thought this was a Depeche Mode song.  I used to think it was until I learned otherwise.

LOL.  Japan had an entire album, Tin Drum, from 1981 which was mostly oriental sounding instruments.
