Subject: Why do people love the 80s?
Written By: Ryan112390 on 08/04/12 at 11:21 am
I got into a big debate on all sorts of things with my nephew, who turned 16 yesterday, which means he was born in 1996. He declared--and so did several of his siblings and his mother (who is 39)--That the 80s were the best decade ever, that if the 80s were put up against the 70s or 60s (he said the 60s were weird and gay) or 50s or 90s or today, the 80s would win. So then I ask him some questions about the '80s---What are the good bands?---No answer. I ask if he likes MJ--MJ sucked. I explain to him that MJ was basically the King of the '80s. He dodges from that. I ask OK--What about Aerosmith's comeback (he doesn't know who Aerosmith is!). I ask about Guns N' Roses, he says that's gay. I ask about Flock of Seagulls, he doesn't know what that is. Adam Ant, the Smith? No reply. I say if the 80s is better, do you think women should be wearing shoulder pads? No idea what I'm talking about. Teased hair? He didn't have any clue what that was. Would he have a mullet? He didn't know what a mullet is. I asked him to name one trend, one music group, one good movie from the 80s that shows him why the 80s is the best. He couldn't name any, but still insisted that the 80s were the best decade ever, and that if he asked all of his friends on facebook if the 80s was the best decade, they'd all say yes. But he didn't know anything about what the 80s really were
The point I'm getting to is you have a lot of people--kids, teenagers, etc--who weren't even ALIVE in the 80s who for some reason have nostalgia for the 80s and feel it was the best decade ever, just because. And you have a ton of 80s nostalgia and love in our pop culture in general.
So I ask--why do people love the 80s? What was so great about the 80s as opposed to the 50s, 60s, 70s or 90s? What's with the 80s obsession in our pop culture?
For me the 80s was basically a crappy overcomercialized gilded age with the cheesiest, lamest, overdone and glitzy, teased up gimmicky trends, bright lame neon fashion, and horrible, overly anthemic, overproduced and safe Hair Metal music (Ugh, Bon Jovi.), with a senile puppet treasonous President in the White House who got away with everything because he had a grandfatherly smile and made good jokes. The only good things about the 80s were The Lost Boys Record, MJ, Guns N' Roses, Adam Ant, Metallica, Quensryche and Morrissey and Sisters of Mercy, some movies and Anne Rice books. Only western sort of fashion (Denim) and underground stuff saved the 80s fashion wise, too.

I was a big fan of the 80s a few years ago (actually I still am), but at least I knew the pop culture, politics and zeitgeist of the decade.
Your nephew is a false 80s fan like many kids and teens.

I'm somewhat the same way, I am 22 years old, born in 1990 and I love the 80s. The difference is I actually know what the 80s was about, at least on a second hand level (nothing truly substitutes for real experience, of a place or a time).
I like the 80s because it was so weird and off-kilter. I dislike the political attitudes in the United States and Ronald Reagan, but it's not like people in this country are truly more progressive today, aside from maybe on a couple token issues like gay rights. I like the 80s because they were so weird and different. The 60s and 70s were cool too. The 50s, 90s, 00s and 10s are kind of bland, they're too 'real world', they don't really have a life of their own like the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Well I have to agree with him that Guns 'n Roses are gay, as was Adam Ant (I suppose he still is).
But the 2010's are far gayer than any previous decade (what with the Chicken Filet kerfuffle), followed closely by the 2000's and then I think the 1970's with disco and "Its Raining Men". :D

People who have absolutely no connection to the 80's can't be serious if they say that they like the 80's - at least, if they don't even like the music or fashion. Maybe they think it's cool, because people who lived during that time told them that it was cool - or it is generally considered 'cool' to like the 80's today. I remember a time, when that was not the case.
I love the 80's:
a) because I like the music
b) I like the atmosphere
c) I feel a connection to it since I was born then and I remember a bit the transitional time from 80's to 90's
d) I had lots of 80's toys (have an older sister)
I can't understand how people could like the decade if not even one aspect of a)-d) fits to them.

I think a lot of the younger people like the '80s because they romanticize it-especially those who only remember a post-9-11 world. The '80s seem like a carefree time because the cold war was coming to an end and finally ended before the decade did. People didn't have to take off their shoes to board an airplane. Members of Congress actually compromised to make the country run. Just about everything went as far as pop culture was concerned. Big hair, big clothes, etc. It was also the beginning of the electronic age. VHS was introduced (which led to DVDs), cell phones started to become the norm as were computers. The American Dream was still alive. Of course music was good back then. A lot of what was put out was new and innovated.
Yup-it sounded like a great time-unlike today. So people romanticize about it-you know, the good old days.

It seems that every 30 years or so there's a decade that's romanticized.
It happened to the 1920s, the 1960s, and now it's the 80s turn. People like the 80s because they have a romanticized view of it.

I was born in 1990, so just at the beginning of the '90s, but I totally missed the '80s. My siblings were born in '72, '73 and '80 respectively so they all experienced those decades. I look back at family photos and TV shows and movies from the '80s and it just seems like it was a great time and I kinda wish I was born earlier so I could've taken part in it.
Anyone feel the same way?
Not trying to be nitpicky, just wondering why you might have changed your mind.

Couldn't one say much of the same about the '90s?
-Carefree pre 9-11 world
-The Cold War was totally over by 1992.
-No real, major fears about terrorism even after the '93 WTC bombings. No real major foreign policy threats throughout the whole decade, whereas in the early-mid 80s the Cold War was still very tense and there was still what seemed to be very real danger of nuclear war until Gorbi came into office in '85.
-Pop culture boomed during the '90s; Stuff pioneered in the 80s (MTV, music videos, modern television) came into full bloom in the 90s. There were tons of cool 90s trends (flowery women's clothes, grunge wear, rap clothes, double denim, long hair on men came back into fashion, piercings, tattoos, etc).
-VHS was totally ubiquitous in the '90s; CDs fully reigned by the 90s (whereas for most of the 80s they were still new tech); DVD was in by '98.
-While computers were growing as a new technology in the 80s, they weren't really purchased by the majority of mainstream America until the 90s...Most people in the 80s who had computers either worked in that industry, had more money or were geeky types. Computers didn't become a fixture of everyday life until the 90s. Most in the middle class didn't have a home PC until sometime in the '90s.
-Cell Phones were, like computers, only really owned by people with money in the 80s, the upper class, the yuppies...Middle class America didn't have cell phones until the 90s in most cases. This too paints the 80s as a decade which really only was a great time for the upper class, business types and the rich rather than your average Joe.
-The 90s were marked, for most of it, by one of the biggest economic booms in modern history. The Clinton era was pretty much one prolonged economic boom. I mean, for most of the '90s, the biggest scandal that rocked America was Monica Lewinsky.
-With regard to music, the same can be said of the 90s...Industrial, Rap, Grunge, Girl Pop, Boy Bands, Nu-Metal...All either came into being or came into their own in the 90s.
I'd actually go on to say that if we're talking about the "good old days", the 90s qualifies more...And should get more nostalgia. The 90s took everything about the 80s and made it less cheesy while still being fun.

Not trying to be nitpicky, just wondering why you might have changed your mind.
More that people in my family were real young, that I would've liked to have met my parents before they met each other for example...My family and it's dynamics were much different then, my sisters ranged between 8, 7, and 0 years old to 17, 16 and 9 years old between '80 and '89...We only have a brief home movie from 1987 or 1988 and I would've loved to have seen my sisters as kids and young teens. My parents in their late 20s to mid 30s. We only have a brief tape of my dad on TV from '86.
I'm not saying it was the worst decade ever...There are elements I absolutely love from it, like I said, The New Romantic stuff, Synth Pop/New Wave, Metal (Iron Maiden etc), Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith's comeback, the revival of Rockabily in the '80s, films like Indiana Jones, ET, the latter two Star Wars films, shows like Magnum PI, but I don't feel it deserves the blind love it gets now, that it's hailed as the "BEST DECADE EVER". I just feel that, to put the 80s on a pedestal is to put Reagan on the same pedestal. My sense of politic and stuff is at a height given it's an election year, anyway...He, along with the tackier elements I've mentioned, define the 80s moreso than the good parts for me....
The early 80s and late 80s were GREAT periods (I love the little era from like 87 or 88 to around 93) but the middle 80s is when the cheese reigned supreme. It's just a totally over-commercialized era, too glitzy, too tacky, a little too self indulgent, too "Reaganite Entertainment" as I've heard the term used. Too gimmicky overall. Everything had a gimmick, really, in the '80s. It's a time when the rich got richer, the yuppies and executives had fun and the middle class began to die it's slow death and jobs began to be outsourced.....
I realize that we (Americans) needed to have a party, needed to relax and celebrate and indulge themselves after the incredible upheaval of the 1960s and the traumas, betrayals and disappointments of the 1970s, but we went way too far with the fun and we're just beginning to feel the after effects of the '80s and the Reagan era now. The party is finally over and the hangover is finally upon us.

80s and 90s are pretty interesting decades to me. 00s kind of sucked, 70s kind of sucked, the 60s were very changeful and interesting, and the 50s are too old school for most youngsters to care about.
80s are cool because it had a more innocent, care free vibe. Its reputation is that of a time when people mostly just wanted to listen to cool synth music and make a lot of money, and the U.S. economy really started booming again in the 1980s after a lost decade in the 70s. A lot of things we have today, such as cable television, video games, and personal computers really began their rise in the 1980s. It can be seen as a more innovative and happening decade where people's attitudes were just a little more lax overall, so things seemed simpler and more enjoyable even if the reality was different. Also a lot of classic high school comedies, which ties it even more strongly to the teens of today.

When reading the topic titel, I'm mostly thinking about the typical 'it's so wrong it's actually retro-cool' hipster way of thinking. :)
Some early 90s elements have also reached that stadium; for myself, with musical roots in the 1991-1993 era, it can be annoying. Seeing very young people listening to that stuff, only because it's considered retro-hip. Not because it REALLY fits their taste. :(
And I'm also not a fan of the pop culture of the mid 80s, with all the plastic or just bland sounding music, and all the hairdo's looking exploded. :-\\
I really like the lást part of the 80s (and 1990), though, although I haven't experienced the music from that era by myself. But it's just because a lot of music fits my taste, not in a hipster way. But hey, popculturewise 1987/1988 belonged to the same era as 1991 (was in fact the beginning of it), so it isn't strange that part feels more comfortable to me. ;)

I agree, despite having some nice years in the 90's (due to personal life), they were mostly too bland compared to the 80's and even to the early-mid 00's.
No wonder local TV stations here showed mostly 80's cartoons like The Littles, Inspector Gadget and Beverly Hills Teens during most of the 90's and 80's music video programs* up to 1995! Radio played 90's music of course, but I never bothered listening to it. Except for a few songs, I never experienced 90's music when it was new and I'm glad! ;) I cannot understand how can someone miss 90's music when 80's and early-mid 00's songs were way better? 90's cartoons and Internet-free life are the only things I miss from the 90's.

I was born in 1991 but there were still 80s holdovers around everywhere into the 90s. The 80s cartoons were still on TV, 80s decor/graphics were still common, my parents still played 80s music, half the cars on the road were from the 80s. None of that stuff is around anymore. So I'm nostalgic for the 80s even though I never lived in the decade itself.
And to answer the OP, I honestly think it's because the 80s were a pretty squeaky clean decade pop culture-wise and people miss that.

I wonder why most people nowadays have a very wrong view of the 80's and think that everyone then used to dress like M.J. or Madonna to school/college/work? Of course the US had the Madonna wannabes, but they weren't the majority of the population.
Looking at Google search results for "80's clothes" one gets a wrong, exaggerated view of the 80's. Well, guess what - people didn't wear disco clothing and leg warmers to work or lectures. And most men didn't dress like Michael or Prince and didn't wear make up like KISS. Ordinary life is NOT a music video! Ordinary people usually look way more ... well ordinary and not as over-the-top as celebrities and music stars. There were the preppies, the yuppies and they dressed rather smart and clean-cut. I even bet that most ordinary, non-famous people dressed rather modest. Of course there were some fringe groups like the goths, punks, etc. but the ordinary kids and folks didn't wear disco or rock music video wear every day like today's media makes us believe.
I guess in the 2030's someone will look at Lady Gaga's meat dress and say 'Everyone was wearing meat in the 2010's, while in fact that is not the case. Ignorance like this infuriates me. As a matter of fact nowadays more and more ordinary people look like celebrity copycats, while in the 90's and previous decades that was not as common.
I don't think those kids looked/dressed like pop stars:
http://goldmonkey.com/catalog/images/whizkids.jpg
^And I'm pretty sure most 80's kids looked more like them than like Madonna, Prince, the guys from KISS, Boy George et al.

The 1980's may seem innocent when you compare them to today, but they weren't nearly as innocent as you might think. Remember, we're talking about the Golden Age of raunchy teen sex comedies and slasher pics here. If you have never seen Porky's, Revenge of the Nerds, Caddyshack, or Fast Times at Ridgemont High before you ought to check them out, I think you'd find them quite enjoyable. But certainly not innocent.

@AL-B, yep rock and heavy metal were always raunchy and some punk, too. But mainstream pop music (and some pop-rock) was mostly innocent. Think early Kylie Minogue, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson innocent.
I don't think we'll ever get back to doing simple, clean-cut pop music videos like that where the singer has so much skin covered ;) :

Never heard them called the "Beatle Surfers" before, that's a new one. ;D
BTW, not to get too far off topic but this was one of my top 5 favorite albums of the 1990's:

@AL-B, yep rock and heavy metal were always raunchy and some punk, too. But mainstream pop music (and some pop-rock) was mostly innocent. Think early Kylie Minogue, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson innocent.
I don't think we'll ever get back to doing simple, clean-cut pop music videos like that where the singer has so much skin covered ;) :
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_EmtTTTj9ckk/SbHLCmlJVnI/AAAAAAAAAfU/1iWfF0S5NOQ/s400/km.jpg
For the most part that's true, but the PMRC made a list of what was called "The Filthy Fifteen," which were songs that they wanted banned (presumably because these songs made their naughty parts get all tingly and engorged), and several of the songs on this list were from mainstream pop artists:
1. Prince, "Darling Nikki" (sex)
2. Sheena Easton, "Sugar Walls" (sex)
3. Judas Priest, "Eat Me Alive" (sex)
4. Vanity, "Strap On Robbie Baby" (sex)
5. Mötley Crüe, "Bastard" (violence)
6. AC/DC, "Let Me Put My Love into You" (sex)
7. Twisted Sister, "We're Not Gonna Take It" (violence)
8. Madonna, "Dress You Up" (sex)
9. W.A.S.P., "Animal (F8ck Like a Beast)" (sex/language)
10. Def Leppard, "High 'n' Dry (Saturday Night)" (drug and alcohol use)
11. Mercyful Fate, "Into the Coven" (satanism)
12. Black Sabbath, "Trashed" (drug and alcohol use)
13. The Mary Jane Girls, "In My House" (sex)
14. Venom, "Possessed" (satanism)
15. Cindy Lauper, "She Bop" (masturbation)
A lot of people feel that George W. Bush may very well have been the worst president in American history, but had things gone the other way back in 2000 then I don't think it's a huge stretch of the imagination to believe that Tipper Gore would have been the worst First Lady in US history. :P

Prince was always vilified for having "suggestive lyrics". I disagreed then like I disagree now. Prince was not "suggestive"... he came right out and said what he wanted!
Sheena's "Sugar Walls" was an odd song. About the second ot third time I listened to it on the radio, I listened to the words and HOLY CRAP. I still wonder how that song got past the censors. :o Like ol' Prince, there was nothing suggestive about those lyrics. ;D

Married With Children was freakin' hilarious.
One of the first times I saw it I was watching it with my brother, and the Bundys were at a fancy restaurant and they had just finished their dinner. Al Bundy looked at his family and then said smugly, "Y'know, there's only one thing that can top off a meal like this. Waiter, bring me a newspaper!" The waiter then brought Al a newspaper and he got up and started strutting towards the men's room, and then my brother burst out laughing and yelled out, "HE'S TAKING A SH!T!!!" And I think I actually started crying from laughing so hard. ;D ;D ;D

1st – Why is this topic in the 2010’s? This post does NOT belong here.
2nd – Seems like a modification of decadeology to me, "why do people like the 80’s over say the 90’s, the 70’s etc, blah, blah, blah",. Same subject, different approach, especially as its posed in the 2010’s.
Uncle Reagan is one of the best things of the 80's. That man crushed communism with an iron fist and made America strong.
3rd –Ahh…, nope. Communism simply ran out of steam and funding. It wasn’t economically viable for the USSR and the Soviets found this out sooner than most. We simply outspent them trying to match what the western world had so much more of, money to supply the delusion of economic power and military supremacy.
China and other Communist countries learned to adopt capitalistic methods with socialism, Russia didn’t. That China is now the worlds powerhouse economic state, proves that Communism, at least in one form, isn't "crushed", not even in the slightest bit.
Doesn’t mean that capitalism doesn’t have its end faults too, we are working with those issues right now, with mixed success to say the least…
The only thing really Reagan did was make sure the Soviets didn’t have any alternative to turn to, made sure they didn’t have anywhere else to go but down, no other resources for money, not from their satellite states and not for military buildup spending.
The Soviet Union would of collapsed no matter what, could have been under Reagan, Bush or Clinton, but it was going to happen. To use a 80's term, "It was a done deal".

You might be able to say the same thing about the '90s but to me, most of the stuff that came out in the '90s was based on stuff from the '80s. Very little (in terms of pop culture) was new.

I liked the 80s initially because it was when Michael reigned supreme over the pop world. But the more I got into him, other things trickled down to me. Like I'd see him with certain people and I liked they way they dressed wore thier hair and make up and it all kind spawned and mushroomed from there, really. I like how everything was loud and bright and just kind of fun. And I liked seeing old magazines withOUT a website attatched to the bottom of it. It seems times were simpler. And I long for simpler things. All I can think of as far as the 80s go, was that my mom was alive and well and wasn't sick. My dad wasn't sick or blind in one eye. My grandma was alive. Michael was alive. And I liked my family back then. I wasn't sick myself in the 80s.
I wish I could go back to when things were better, you know. When life was still fresh and good for me. Because I don't like my life now. I don't like myself. And most of the people I cared for are gone. Grandma in 1993, Mom in 2008, Michael in 2009. Also my health in 2009. If I could go back, I'd go in a heartbeat.
It just represents a happier time for me.

I personally like the 1920's and 1940's better than the 1980's.
1920's had soulful jazz and great vaudeville acts. Women became more free with the right to vote. Life involved working in factories during the day and partying on the town at night with dances such as the Charleston.
1940's could easily be called the golden age of musicals. Tap dance of the time provided divine entertainment. I would rather watch Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly perform any day than modern reality shows such as Dancing with the Stars. I loved fashion of the time too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFabjc6mFk4
America's stars and entertainment of the time were very different from today's culture.
However, I think a lot of people love the 1980's because times seemed simpler and the economy was better.

First of all, shouldn't this be in the 80's section? ??? I'm confused as to why you posted this in the 2010's section.
Second of all, it seems to me that you're nephew is an 80s fan just because it's the cool thing that's in right now considering all the 80's nostalgia we've been seeing in the past few years, especially in music. Personally, I love the 80's though I never had the chance to experience it because I was born in the early 90's. Honestly, if I could visit a time period that I never had the chance to experience, my first destination would be the 1980s. I believe the reason why I have grown to love the 80's more and more over time is because I was exposed to it when I was a kid in the 1990s. I distinctly remember listening to 80's music (mostly pop and R&B) in my household such as MJ, Madonna, Prince, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, New Edition, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Teena Marie, Nu Shooz, Phil Collins and many others (in fact, I was also exposed to 70's and even 60's music when I was younger that I have grown to love over time, but that's veering off topic ;)). I also remember watching re-runs of 80's tv shows like The Cosby Show, Full House, Growing Pains, The Wonder Years, Family Matters, Different Strokes and cartoons like Ducktales, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers (fun fact: The Jets performed the show's intro), A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries (whose intro was clearly inspired by MJ's "Thriller": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3piTKCJnuU ) that I enjoyed watching on Disney Channel and Cartoon Network at the time. I miss seeing those shows on tv nowadays. I also remember being exposed to a few 80's movies that either my family had around the house or I saw on tv, though I really didn't start watching a lot of 80's movies til the mid 00's. Some movies from the 80's that I remember watching were The Land Before Time, The Brave Little Toaster, Oliver & Company, Who Framed Rodger Rabbit? and Scooby Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf. Besides enjoying the music, tv shows and movies from the 80's, I think another reason why I love the 80's is because it just seemed like a cool and carefree before computers, the internet, cellphones and social media became dominant.
So my exposure to some 80's pop culture at a young age definitely helped fuel my love and appreciation for the decade. This grew even more in the mid and late 00's when I pretty much started rebelling against 00's music I was exposed to while I was in high school and started turning to 80's (and 90's) music. And shows like the I Love the 80's series on VH1 definitely fulfilled my strong interest to learn more about 80's pop culture. I swear, sometimes I wish I could've been born about 10-25 years before my birthdate so that I could've experienced it. Just hearing my mom tell me stories about how she was living it up in NYC in the 1980s and seeing artists in concert like Madonna makes me jealous.
So yeah, that's why I love the 80's. I guess you can say I might have some more knowledge about and appreciation for the decade than the average person in their early 20's. :P
But seriously though, why isn't this in the 80's section?
and at the time when Michael Jackson, Madonna and Prince ruled the airwaves.
To me, they are the holy trinity of 80's music. I love how they were all born in the summer of 1958, by the way. 8)

It's probably because of the fashion, and the music. Personally, I love the '80s because I am nostalgic about it sometimes. I was born in 1980, so it was the first decade that I lived through. Having had a childhood in the '80s is more than enough for me to like the decade. That doesn't mean that I go around today listening to '80s music and wearing '80s clothing because I know the '80s are over. I only listen to '80s music when I am feeling nostalgic and I want to remember those days. Same with '90s music, only when I am nostalgic. Sometimes I tune into VH1 Classic and watch classic music videos. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with listening to '80s music or getting into '80s culture all the time, I know a lot of people do. Whatever makes them happy, to each his own

I used to be obsessed the eighties a few years ago, when it was trendy. The idea of liking a decade so glittery and futuristic seemed... rebellious, and most people I went to school with loved it.
Now it's 2012, people don't care as much about the eighties, and l've suddenly lost interest in eighties culture. All of the eighties songs I liked suddenly lost their appeal, and all of the nineties songs I listened to before but never was too impressed by suddenly felt "fresh" and "cool." And I've always been someone who picked what I liked without regarding what people around me thought.
All I can say is: I have no idea what the mechanism is that makes people like certain eras or styles and not others, but somehow I always end up attracted to the same things as other people my age.

It's because most opinion setters of today, the "big swinging dicks" of the 2010s, grew up in that period. They miss it and want to find ways to recreate it because childhood and adolescence are the portions of one's life that most people feel most nostalgic about (explanation: www.youtube.com/watch?v=coGfGmOeLjE). The thirtysomethings of the 2020s will idolize the 1990s just like we do the 1980s. In fact, it's already starting, I'd say. Conversely, my parents (who are in their 60s) remember the early 1970s most fondly.

It's the decade of (most) of the Star Wars movies, synth rock and other types of experimental sounds, computers are becoming smaller for use in your home, crazy wacky fashion. Cool cartoons. Just seemed like a cool, fun time.

Guilty as charged. Born in 1990, but I love just about all things 80s, and people who don't like that decade or call it dated, really irritate me.
As for why I like it and how I came to like it, I think it's rooted in hearing Phil Collins when I was a young kid (3-4 years old). I loved his music and was disappointed that as the 90s went on, his type of music seemed to disappear. Every once in a while, I'd hear a good song either by him or the Police or some other singer/group from that era, and soon enough I made the connection. Once that happened, the rest was history. And as I grew up in the 2000s, while it sucked as a decade, I was able to take advantage of the strong 80s nostalgia and listen to stuff that no teenager in 1995 would've gotten away with.
As for why I don't like other decades as much, the 50s to 70s are just too distant from my lifetime and hard for me to relate to, though I'm a huge fan of classic rock. The 90s was good in many ways, but the pop culture seemed bland compared to the 80s, and got progressively worse as the decade went on. The 00s, don't get me started... >:(

Loved it as a kid, watching stuff like Lost Boys, Goonies, Fright Night and wishing I was a teen then, the clothes, hair, style, no need for technology to influence loneliness, but a very social and adventurous time, wish I was a 16 year old suburban teen in mid 80s, however as a kid, I would not change my 1998-2000 experience.

For the most part that's true, but the PMRC made a list of what was called "The Filthy Fifteen," which were songs that they wanted banned (presumably because these songs made their naughty parts get all tingly and engorged), and several of the songs on this list were from mainstream pop artists:
1. Prince, "Darling Nikki" (sex)
2. Sheena Easton, "Sugar Walls" (sex)
3. Judas Priest, "Eat Me Alive" (sex)
4. Vanity, "Strap On Robbie Baby" (sex)
5. Mötley Crüe, "Bastard" (violence)
6. AC/DC, "Let Me Put My Love into You" (sex)
7. Twisted Sister, "We're Not Gonna Take It" (violence)
8. Madonna, "Dress You Up" (sex)
9. W.A.S.P., "Animal (F8ck Like a Beast)" (sex/language)
10. Def Leppard, "High 'n' Dry (Saturday Night)" (drug and alcohol use)
11. Mercyful Fate, "Into the Coven" (satanism)
12. Black Sabbath, "Trashed" (drug and alcohol use)
13. The Mary Jane Girls, "In My House" (sex)
14. Venom, "Possessed" (satanism)
15. Cindy Lauper, "She Bop" (masturbation)
A lot of people feel that George W. Bush may very well have been the worst president in American history, but had things gone the other way back in 2000 then I don't think it's a huge stretch of the imagination to believe that Tipper Gore would have been the worst First Lady in US history. :P
I laughed at the bolded.
Anyway.

At least where I live, the 80s are starting to fade out in popularity and "making way" for the 90s.
But I do agree that it is silly for kids to get nostalgic for times that they don't even remember. It's silly to say "the 80s were the best" but not be able to reference a band or something to say why.

I did recently watch the pilot though(which wasn't perfect, but not too bad either).
What's funny about the theme to The Get Along Gang is this lyrical line:
"Each one so special in his own way"
Um, song... in case you haven't noticed, half of the mane* main six characters are girls. :D
Dottie(the dog), Woolma(the lamb) and Portia(the porcupine). (I know there are more characters in the group, but these are among the six that get the most attention)
*Sorry about that, habit I picked up from being a Brony.

I'm a baby boomer and for me it (the 80s) was the last decade when music was good. Almost the same can be said for TV, although TV did have some good shows in the 90s and 00s, but not many.
Do I love the 80s? Compared to how much I love the 60s and 70s, no. But I love the 80s more than anything that came after that. I am guessing that my feelings on this have a whole lot to do with my age.

I like the nostalgia of it all. Just being a little kid and not really caring about how my life was going to be. The music, the toys, everything really.

The overall hype of the 80s seem to be over. Not for me ever. ;D
I remember I love the 80s of VH1 in starting in 2001 and from then on it was 80s this and 80s that. By 2004 80s nostalgia was EVERYWHERE! It lasted until the early 10s and now it's died down quite a bit.
It seems a 90s obssession is around the corner because American Dad had a 90s episode a few days ago. It was set in 1996!

Often people don't get tired on the decade they grew up in. That's why I like the very late 60s and the 70s.
I like lots of the 80s too, though.

Even for those who were too young to fully experience the decade like myself, it now has the lure of being a simpler time. Sure the technology is much more sophisticated today than it did in the '80s (think of how simple the '50s were compared to the '80s: Cable color, stereo TV vs. Black-and-white, antenna, mono TV; Commodore 64 computer Dot Matrix printer vs. manual typewriter; cordless touch-tone phone with answering mashine vs. rotary pulse dial and more expensive long distance charges; portable cassettes and VHS tapes vs. vinyl records and silent film cameras (the only home movies at the time). The '80s still resonate that "modern" feeling for those who fully appreciate it despite progress marching on. However, for some who experienced the decade firsthand they feel that the '80s are no so long ago it makes them cry too much to enjoy it as it would show their age too much to others leaving '80s nostalgia as a guilty pleasure; for example someone who graduated high school in 1981 is turning 50 this year! Since I was born in the '80s and it occured before I hit my prime, it will always have that fantasy, magical quality that I will never quite fully understand. I have over 80% of all TV Guide issues released in the '80s, over 5,000 vinyl records (sure that's antiquidated by then, but vinyl was still widely availble in the '80s), a bunch of VHS tapes from the '80s, and a few dozen fashion magazines from that decade along with many action figures/toys to show how invaluable the culture was. The later stages of the Cold War turned out to be the heroic climax of the 20th century's most important struggle: communism. It was when the "Information Age" first went mainstream, even if the Internet was still a decade away from becoming a household, everyday item. Then you look over your shoulder and see how different of a world the 21st century is and notice how as time passes, the '80s get more special by having a legacy that will fade but won't be forgotten.

I used to love watching VH1 back then just for I Love the 80s and so on. I wish they would still do re-runs of it. I think the 80's nostalgia/influence is still around, but not as much as it used to be a couple years ago. I can personally say that my summer has been 80's influenced based on a lot of the music I've been listening to so far. 8)

Being a late 1970s baby I've had the pleasure to live through the 80s and be able to listen to great music such as this. I know that Heart started out in the 1970s but this is probably one of their most famous songs. :)
Anne says that she experienced some discrimination when she and Nancy filmed this video because she had gotten big and the director had to hide her stomach in the shadows.
