Subject: 80s bass playing
Written By: belmont22 on 07/30/12 at 6:31 am
Anyone else think bass guitar playing in the 80s was top notch? It really seems like new wave especially emphasized bass guitar of the funky, slapped kind.

Top notch, yes. Funky, slap bass? Kind of…
Bass guitar took on a different set, so to speak from the late 70’s on. With the onset of new wave, moving on from punk and DIY, I think the last bit of funk bass from the 70’s funk scene did have influence on a lot of new styles of music in the 80’s
Once funk pop/slap bass had been introduced in the late 60’s and into the 70’s, the bass wasn’t in the background anymore, just lying back in the cup. Once funk showed that the bass could lead and drive a song, it was unleashed for those to experiment with what it could do.
Plus, once the synthesizer came into its own, synth bass was able to do what a lot of bass & keyboard musicians couldn’t do on a regular bass, lots of “slap bass” sounds or styles were emulated that way.
These are just some of the bassists that influenced me (a bass player for 27 years) and had a dramatic impact on 80’s bass…(not to leave keyboard “bass” players out, but I’m a bass player, sooo…). Some funky, some not, but all showing lots of influence from the same genre.

Agreed. Bass was definitely emphasized in early's new wave music.

Mick Karn was great. The bass on Japan's 'Life in Tokyo' from 1979 was epic!

Check out the bass in this awesome song by the Aussie band Dropbears:

The bass player was Chris Toms who also went by Chris Cross (not the Ultravox bass guitarist). Sadly, he died last year.

Not exactly a mainstream sound, but yeah, the slap bass had its place.

You probably remember them from 1985's Nemesis (with its samples from Apocalypse Now), but Shriekback didn't just do horror with heavy guitar, they also threw down some serious bass.

Tina Weymouth, Talking Heads
I know she was mentioned earlier, but no video was offered so the bass could be heard. This is probably the best example(from the 80's).

I love that song but I think this song is a bit better demonstration of Tina's abilities.

Lots of people slapped their bass in the 80s. Oh wait, you mean play a guitar? LOL
No one did it quite like Mark King from Level 42, best heard on 'Hot Water' from 1984/85
