Subject: The 80sness of Saved by the Bell

Written By: nintieskid999 on 06/30/12 at 4:58 am

I think the Breakfast club dressed more realistically 80s as in lots of people dressed like that in the 80s but the Saved by the Bell style is more associated with the 80s (even though the show was mainly early 90s).

Here is a comparison:

Well it did spawn from the series "Good Morning Miss Bliss", which featured the characters of Zack, Screech, Lisa, and Mr. Belding, all of whom moved on to "Saved By The Bell" (which did premiere in the summer of 1989).

Well the show did start in 1989 and it ended in 1993 but I still remember the 1992-1993 season looking 80s.

This looks so 1986 or 1987 it isn't even funny. Compare their fashion with this 1987 video:

I would say Saved By The Bell dressed more 80's.

There was also the big and bulky cell phone which Zack Morris used. Those things hung around into the 90's as well...

It was a tough call, because I also remember the neon, but...

...yeah, I'm gonna go with Breakfast Club.

I think the thing is what people commonly perceive of as 80s fashion is more the fashion of the late 80s/early 90s than of the 80s in their entirety.

And the way some of them talked.

I remember a lot of people wore jean jackets and jean skirts when I went to high school (class of 89)
Maybe it was just where I was living at the time (Virginia) but you weren't cool, if you were out and about and didn't have on a jean jacket.

The Breakfast Club was set in Chicago, Saved By The Bell was set on the California coast. That makes a comparison pretty apples-and-oranges right there, NTM they were set at different eras of the 80's! Thnk about it.

Ok, The Cast from The Breakfast Club dressed more real 80's to me. Why?  Because if you look at the picture of the Saved by the Bell cast, they look like they could've taken place in the early 90's.  To a casual observer, the late 80's was very 80's, but it's really when the mid 80's culture was dying out and making way for the early 90's.  I think the cast of the Breakfast club dressed like actual people from the 80's, not the over the top, neon, campy, punky way that people think of the 80's today.

Saved By The Bell.  Why? Because I can remember wearing some of the same stuff.
