Subject: Very rarely does a song totally "take me back"...
Written By: oingo_fan on 06/19/12 at 10:00 pm
This gem popped up on one of my Pandora channels and I totally zoned out for the entire time it was playing. The last time I heard it was probably 1988. Gotta love the power of music.

I remember Bruce Cockburn, very eclectic singer/songwriter, but I remember his other song "If I Had A Rocket Launcher" much more than "Lovers In A Dangerous Time"....

Either way, have to disagree with your topic heading, music, a song, in its many forms, and from many time periods ALWAYS takes me back, completely...f'instance, remember R.E.M.'s - It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)? If you're in your mid 40's (like me) and you're at a bar or someplace with other 40-somethings and this song plays, all the 40-somethings sing along/knows the words, verbatim. Its 1987 all over again, bizarre.

Didn't know Bruce Cockburn was remembered in the US for more than 'Wondering Where the Lions Are'
I liked 'Lovers in A Dangerous Time' and still think it was his best song of the 80s. In 1991, a tribute album of Cockburn songs was releasd, and on it, a then unsigned band called The Barenaked Ladies did a cover of it and it became their first ever hit.

I was hearing this song on the loudspeaker at Pathmark yesterday and this song took me back to the early 80's.

I find that that a lot of 80s songs do that to me in one way or another.

Takes me back to hanging out in Harvard Square in the summer of '86. "Juju" was the second Siouxsie album I bought after "Tinderbox," which was new at the time. "Juju" is still my favorite Siouxsie!

Lou Reed: My Love is Chemical (1985)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgd1hh_KaS0
(written by Walt Altridge/produced by Phil Ramone)
Song received a flurry of airplay after the release of "White Nights," in which Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov do a modern dance routine to it. "My Love is Chemical" was released as a single as well as on the soundtrack LP. It never charted. I think it takes me back because I heard it often enough then (fall '85/winter '86) to form impressions which were preserved by the quick cessation of airplay. The big hit from "White Nights" was "Separate Lives" by Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin.
