Back in the 80s, some of the New Age bands had some interesting futuristic looking costumes to them, such as DEVO or Flock of Seagulls (among others). Now remembering those costumes feels like nostalgia, since it was from so long ago. Not sure if I explained it well enough. :-\\

Exactly... But...
Think about texhnology as well. The first cell phone. Cordless phones. Personal desktop computers. Video game system advances. Stereos. Tvs.
All these things advanced in the 80s and we were like "Whoa! You can listen to CDs on that UFO looking device. Wow I can talk on a phone I carry in a briefcase because it doesn't fit in my pocket!!! Hey look at
The characters in these video games they kind look like something more than squares and triangles!!! It looks so real! Not real real but way more real than it could possible ever look :D '

Tis true. I remember my first time on the internet, Wow! That was before they even had graphical webpages. It was all text-based.
I remember coding my first webpage. I was so proud. ;D
I used to think it was so pompous to have a cell phone as big as a brick in your car. ;D Not only do things change, people's attitudes change too.

OT: We were still using those slang words in the early '90s, so "rad" and "dude" aren't exclusive to the 1980s.

I know that. Those terms first got big in the 80's, though. They died around 1993. My brother spoke like this all the time back then. When I think of the 90's, I usually think of 1993 to 2003.

'93 is when humanity was REALLY starting to walk away from the year 1990. '90 was the last full year of MTV playing music videos every day (ignoring Unplugged, of course), the original Homer Simpson (he had a different personality in season 1), and Arnold starring in an action movie that was closer to his '80s work (Total Recall). So, most people think of 1990 as an '80s year. '91 and '92, also early '90s years, weren't too far away from 1990 on the timeline and in feeling.

Yeah, I don't disagree. That's why I said in my post that 1993 was the end of these slang terms because that's when the 80's culture went away. I consider 1990-1992 80's holdover years more than anything. If anyone says the entire 90's were filled with 80's backlash then they're lying.
Anyways...

1990-1992 were the early '90s, though. The first term Clinton era culture (Ren and Stimpy) was coming out during this time while the pop culture characters introduced in the late '80s were at their very peak. The '80s were really filler between 1977 and 1990. It's difficult to call the early '90s "holdover years" because the '80s did not have an identity. The '80s were a conglomerate of bands, musicians, and things introduced in the '70s with the franchises that helped to define the early '90s and that's it.

I disagree. I think the 80's is one of the few decades to have a clear identity from 1980 all the way to 1989. I know you really like the year 1990 and you think it's all a build up or whatever but I gotta defend the 80's here. I feel like it definitely had it's own style and identity. 1990-1992 is more like the 80's than 1993-2002 (the true 90's). Sure 1990-1992 is the early 90's (though, I think that even the new stuff that came out in 1990-1992 felt like 80's things that just so happened to come out in a year that ended in 90-whatever) but a lot of the stuff that came from those years belong to the 80's. Then again, you think of cultural eras as build ups and preparations and I don't so our perspectives are going to be completely different all together. Though, your perspective does make a little bit of sense even if I disagree with it. The 80's developed things from the 70's and made them better while having it's own unique culture while the 90's took things from the 80's and tried to make it it's own (Grunge, for example, is an 80's thing. It's as old as 1984 with bands like Green River. Plus, the flannel look is also a huge 80's thing. Check out Megadeth's Wake Up Dead video. Those kids are all wearing flannel shirts and have messy hair) which is also why that 80's backlash (which is heavily exaggerated. It only really lasted from 1993-1996 at most, in my experience. My high school even had an 80's spirit day back in 1998 and everyone got super excited about it) was so stupid.

I get ya'. Though, even if they didn't stay in the 80's, I don't really consider them 90's things. That's why I consider 1990-1992 holdover years; they had things from the 80's that were relevant throughout the decade and not in the actual 90's which spanned from the entire years of 1993-2002. Even Grunge; the first major label Grunge album was released in 1988 and the music was already a thing in 1984 and the fashion goes way back to the 70's. The 80's were pretty rad, though. The stuff was so good and it all had amazing staying power.

1990 was the strongest year of that whole period (1990/1991/1992) and it had a greater '80s atmosphere than each year of the '80s decade.

1990 was the strongest year of that whole period (1990/1991/1992) and it had a greater '80s atmosphere than each year of the '80s decade.
Really... your're saying the early 90s are more 80s than the actual 80s?
Without posting every picture ever uploaded to the internet.... how is that even remotely possible? I mean the 80s are the 80s by factual definition. Yes some of the trends are going to carry over into the next decade because that is how time works... it is a continous thing and doesn't stop because of some invisible marker created centuries ago or some arbitrary date on a calendar....
A TV show that began in the 80s and still aired in the 90s because it was fortunate enough not to get cancelled straddles the mark... it is by definition both an 80s show and a 90s show. It is up to the person who watched to decide whether it feels more 80s to them or more 90s... it's subjective. A matter of personal opinion so it will vary from person to person.
I could go on and on for hours, but I think I'll stop for now. :)
BTW... speaking of posting pics. I may not speak for the entire group but I will speak for my self.... when you post that many pics in one post it takes an incredibly long time for the pictures to load. This is a message board not instagram. Unless you have something relevant to say there is no need to continuously saturate the boards with endless images.
Thank you.

People were preparing for the '90s while we were living in the '80s. So yes, the year 1990 was made up of every pop cultural institution introduced in the '80s. I do actually know folks who think of the early '90s as "the '80s on steroids" for that reason alone. ;)

A few points:
- I don't think of era's as a build up or anything so I disagree with 1990 being more 80's than the 80's but I see your point and we both share a love of the 80's and early 90's (even though I also like the 1993-2002 years).
- People like steroid analogies. I've heard people say 2000-2002 is the 90's on steroids, even.
- One photo had Molly Ringwald and she was a babe. I had a huge, huge crush on her when I was around 10. Ally Sheedy, too. Being 10 was tough on my stomach when it came to girls.
- Super Mario Bros. 3 was released in 1988 in Japan. North America just got it late.
- I don't mind your photos. It's pretty interesting to see but I'd suggest you'd put them in a spoiler so people can open and close it if they want do or whatever. I'd still like to see your perspective on the era (you and I also both share the "spam as much media as possible to prove your point" habit) but the onslaught of photos makes the page too big if I want to scroll down.

Do you guys have to argue about what was more 80s or 90s about whichever decade you want to go back and forth with in nearly every thread? Just because this thread title had 80s in the title, doesn't give you free reign to repeat ad naseum the same things over and over that you've already said in 3/4 of the threads already on here.
Just a little tired of it. If you want to theorize it to death, trust me, you have.

Sometime in 1988 is when the media mindset basically shifted to the '90s, as evidence in this article:
http://articles.latimes.com/1988-08-25/news/vw-1267_1_smart-reader
If anything, 1989 is more '90s than 1999 (and possibly 1998) is for the same mindset, which of course was all about "the 21st century" or "the new millenium". Just like how seasons, holidays, and new model year cars can appear well before their proper beginning, so can stuff about decades.
Here's an article from 1998 that discusses about what the first decade of the 21st century should be named (sorry, the '90s were nothing like the '70s):

No, I don't think that at all nor do I think that is the point to the 80's. At least, beyond your perception of it. The 80's are too cool on their own to be just a build up to 1990. 1990-1992 is just another part of the 80's, personally.
Yes, but the point is that Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy are (or were, I guess, since that photo is 25 years old...) very attractive women who made 10 year old me very red-faced. Don't even let me get into my High School years. Jesus, those were the worst times for me when it came to women. I could hardly get through a full sentence talking to them! Just sat at the cafeteria table with my equally socially-inept friends wishing we could get girlfriends.
I did not know that. That's pretty cool and of course you'd be excited over it being released in 1990. I just hope you don't think Metallica's Black Album is another one of those "build ups" because that album was a load of crap. I don't think anything happens for a reason, though. I think things just happen and there's no purpose to it but that's just my perspective.

You're a gas, dude. You know that? Seriously, you're funny even if you don't mean to be. I am pretty sure Back to the Future 2 was actually delayed and that movie came out in 1989. Dude, the worst movie of the series came out in '90. Home Alone came out, too and that's a pretty crappy movie. Godfather 3 sucked real bad, too along with a million other crap sequels. 1990 was the year a lot of great movies got a bunch of s**t sequels.
I don't get it, though. Everything from the 80's is for 1990 and 1991 and 1992 are just extensions of 1990 but couldn't you just say that everything 1990 had was just taken from the 80's?
For starters, most people would say that Thrash Metal peaked around 1986 (don't you bring up Lights, Camera, Revolution or any other crap albums! Just because it's from 1990 doesn't make it good!) though that is not an exclusive 80's thing, the real Hardcore Punk sound also died around 1986 (the scene lasted from 1981-1986); it hardly survived 1987-1989 and definitely did not last until 1990 but this whole discussion just pushes my viewpoint further that 1990-1992 were just 80's holdovers. They just felt like the 80's; even back then they felt 80's and then 1993-2003 came along and it was clear that 1990-1992 was a different time (is that at least one thing we can agree on? 1990-1992 was a different time?).

1991 and 1992 were the other years of the early '90s. '91 and '92 take after 1990, but they lacked the steam of 1990. There were better TV lineups, music, original movie characters, toys, magazines, and food (last year of the McDLT) in 1990.
....couldn't you just say that everything 1990 had was just taken from the 80's?
No, people in the '80s were not producing movies, TV shows, toys, music, and clothes with hopes of them being dated to the 1980s. So many inventions of the 1980s did not catch on while we were living in them. At the time, most people thought of movies like Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure as still recent.

I agree, but they still exist. Everything serves a purpose. Home Alone was Macaulay's claim to fame. We wouldn't be able to say that Macaulay Culkin was the most-loved child star on the planet in the early '90s if Home Alone was a box office bomb.

I both agree and disagree with that. I do think that 1990 had some great stuff but I don't think everything peaked or was better in 1990. I'm just gonna look at something specific here. So let's look at some of the music I grew up on. So let's look at Punk first. You say all 80's thing are a build up to the year 1990, yet, the Pop Punk style from the 80's (argued to have started around 1978/1979) is said to have peaked in 1994 with some albums like Green Day's Dookie and the Offspring's Smash (and 1994 is apart of the true 90's which is 1993-2003, not the 1990-1992 era). Thrash Metal, an 80's thing, according to most people, peaked in 1986 with albums like Slayer's Reign in Blood and Metallica's Master of Puppets. The only band that is said to have peaked in 1990 is Megadeth with Rust in Peace, other Thrash big Thrash bands like Exodus peaked around 1985 with Bonded by Blood and Anthrax in 1987 with Among the Living. 1990 is not seen as a good year for Thrash; it's actually seen as one of the low points for Thrash releases (pre-1996 Nu Metal times of course). That's not even close to 1990. Grunge (just for the record, I hate Grunge), peaked around 1991 with the releases of Nirvana's Nevermind, Pearl Jam's Ten and Mudhoney's Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, etc. Also, I know you'll probably argue how 1991 and 1992 aren't actually Grungy years and for the most part, I agree. The only grunge kids I actually knew were my brother and some of his friends. For the most part, I'd say 1993 is when I really started seeing that style take off.
When it comes to movie sequels they don't do 1990 justice. Using examples like Gremlins 2 or Robocop 2 paint 1990 as a year that tried to cash in on these franchises successes but just ended up with a bunch of cheap imitations. Also, I don't think things have a purpose. I just think they happen, but I agree with the fact that people in the 80's did not make things with intention to date things to the 80's. It doesn't mean they made things specifically for the year 1990, though.
Funny you bring up Bill and Ted. That movie is one of my favorite movie of all time. My brother took me to see both in 1989 and 1991 and yes, it definitely was seen as recent at the time. Most things from the 80's were, as I remember.
Yeah, yeah, I know but Macaulay Culkin stilled sucked. His only good movie was Uncle Buck. Richie Rich was decent at most but I wouldn't want to sit through that "masterpiece" Pagemaster ever again. Remember, his famed did seep into 1993 and 1994. Both aren't early 90's years. I can tell you enough how much I hate the Home Alone movies. They're terrible.

First impressions are everything. Unfortunately, most sequels are bad. I thought Gremlins 2 was a brilliant satire of the first film and sequels (in general), but everyone has different opinions. As for Robocop 2, the message from the first film was missing, but it was better than anything that came after it. ;D
Would we know that 1990 was the first year of the '90s if there were not so many pop culture phenomenons introduced in the '80s in theaters that year?

You're right, people were making things for the 1990s decade in the '80s. 1990 was the strongest and most definitive year of the 1990s. A good chunk of the inventions of the 1980s were still being produced in 1990. 1990 was the last year of Bonkers candy, The McDlt, G1 Transformers, Pee Wee's Playhouse, Maxie dolls, Tart 'n Tangy Skittles, Spuds McKenzie Bud Light commercials, and Domino Noid commercials. 1990 was made up of everything that first showed up in the '80s. Masters of the Universe figures were still being sold in Dollar General, Star Wars Royal Guard erasers were on clearance at Lionel Kiddy City, and the album Romantic? by Human League was new to music stores.

That is true. Robocop 3 was a disaster! Going back to Bill and Ted; Bogus Journey is a great sequel, if you ask me. Sequels are usually hit and miss. Another 48 Hours was also pretty bad but movies like Beverly Hills Cop 2 or Die Hard 2 were pretty good.
In general, I think people were making things in both the 80's and 90's for the new millennium or the future in general. Stuff like CD's, the Walkman, PC's, internet, the WWW, cell phones are all from the 80's and 90's (and even the 70's) and are the basis for the tech we have access to today. The 90's decade is kind of hard to define, though. I mean, you got 1990-1992 being one era, 1993-1997 being another and 1998-2002 being it's own Y2K era. I consider the entire years of 1993-2002 to be the true 90's while the early 90's was something completely different in general.

Yeah, the early '90s were the last years when George HW Bush was in office. So the pop culture launched in the late '80s was still around. '92 was the final year you could wear a "Don't Worry Be Happy" neon green shirt, Z. Cavariccis, and I.O.U. sweatshirts. Once '93 came around, only the clothing lines and pop culture introduced from 1990 to 1992 were popular. '93 was the time of Red Eraser shirts, Yaga shirts, and Cowboy pullover Starter jackets.

I also remember those Starter Jackets because, back when I was in middle school, kids would say "If you wear that stuff around the wrong neighborhood, you're gonna get mugged or killed." I remember hearing the same thing about Jordan's shoes. 1993 is also the year Grunge truly took over the middle/high schools. By 1994, I couldn't go anywhere without seeing kids trying to look like Cobain driving around in their cars playing Nirvana. They also didn't like taking showers so they always smelled like s**t. I also remember Doc Martens getting huge, too. One thing I think about when I look back to 1994 is all the Doc's I saw. I remember a lot of people around this time looked like the guys in Green Day or The Offspring for example. I do remember seeing that style back in 1988/1989 but it wasn't as common as 1994. When those two bands broke-out in 1994; that changed a lot for me personally since seeing their videos on MTV got me into Punk Rock. Same with Beavis and Butthead. That's still one of my favorite TV shows to this date and it premiered in 1993 (technically 1992 if you count Frog Baseball). It was a really big thing back then.

Haha, really? I don't necessarily hate 3 but I don't think it's as good as 1 or 2. I thought 2 was a really good sequel and just as good as the original.

The first Beavis and Butt-head series was very much a part of that era (core '90s/first Clinton term era/ mid '90s).

3 did not have strong ties to the first two, but it wasn't bad for what it was. It's hard to look at it and not think of the Wild West revival of the late '80s.

I agree with all of this. Beavis and Butthead is very much 1993-1997. It's one of the most defining things of the mid 90's next to Green Day and The Offspring.
Spot on. It was a pretty huge change of pace and mood compared to the first 2. It also lacked the, I guess you could say 'urgency' for lack of a better word.

Haha, I thought them going to another time period or staying in the future would of been cooler but at the same time, it was cool to see young Biff and Marty go at it again. "WHAT A BUTTHEAD!" They did spend too much time in 1955 if you ask me. If it was closer to the end of the movie that would of been a bit better. I kind of wanted stuff about future Marty to have been expanded on a bit. And give Flea a bigger role. Other than that, I love both 1 and 2 pretty much the same. One thing I noticed about 2 when I watched it today (Happy Oct. 21st! Or... Late Oct. 21st?) is that they added some new stuff that popped out of nowhere. All of a sudden Marty doesn't like being called a chicken. I'm all for character development but that just came out of nowhere. Needles, too. Should these things have been introduced in 1? They just kind of plopped them in there with no explanation.

AB was past its prime by the time the '80s hit. Even in the decade's early years, you had Solid Gold as a nice modern update to the format, but with Soul Train persisting its momentum and by then artists mostly lip-synching, the show's golden years (and even silver post-move to LA years) were far past. Then came the explosion of all those music video shows and MTV and the program was seen as quaint as Your Hit Parade was during AB's golden years.

I was specifically talking about the mainstream music of 1984-1988 and fashions of 1982-1987. I definitely think that 1989 is a great year for music though.
